TOBACCO PIPE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 10, 1912.

LEOPOLD DEMUTH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 10, 1912. Serial No. 670,417.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LnoroLn DnMU'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tobacco pipe and it consists essentially of a bowl having an open lower end which is adapted to be closed by means of a plug. This plug is removable so that the bowl can be conveniently cleaned. The open lower end of the bowl is provided with an interiorly threaded part, while the plug has a threaded stem for cooperation with the threaded part of the bowl. Both the threads are formed of metal so that the saliva or nicotin when in contact with the metal will not expand or contract these parts.
In pipes with removable bottoms heretofore constructed, the threads of the bowl and the entering threads of the plug were formed of the same material that composed the bowl and plug. The disadvantage of a construction of this kind was: that the threaded portions would become moist from saliva and nicotin, expanding and contracting the wood, thus putting the threads out of register and the pipe would be useless,
It is the object of this invention to obviate the expansion and contraction of the threaded portions of the plug and bowl of the pipe, so that these parts will fit snugly together.
Another important object is that by removing the plug, all undesirable matter which usually accumulates in the bot-tom of bowls of ordinary pipes can be easily removed and the pipe bowl readily cleaned, thus affording the smoker a sanitary, cool and dry smoke.
The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of a tobacco pipe embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar section showing the plug removed. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan View of a portion of the bowl. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a plug.
In this drawing the letter a designates a bowl and b is a stem connected to the bowl in the ordinary way. The lower end of the bowl is open and it is provided with an interiorly threaded lining 0 having a flange (Z extending about the rim of the bowl. Fastening devices such as pins 6 secure the lining to the bowl.
A plug f is adapted for cooperation with the threaded portion of the bowl, and it includes a projecting stem 9 the exterior surface of which is covered by a sleeve h having screw threads and a flange 6 covering the inner face of the plug. A series of pins coacting with the flange will fasten the sleeve to the plug. The lower portion of the exterior of the plug is shaped to give the bowl a symmetrical appearance, and at the same time form a convenient surface for manipulation of the plug.
The pipe complete with plug properly inserted conforms in appearance to the ordinary pipe only with the practical and sanitary advantages as described herein.
It should be said that none of the metal portions of the bowl, and plug are in contact with the tobacco in the pipe. As shown in the drawing the upper end of the stem of the plug is uncovered so that the burning parts of the tobacco will only be in contact with the wooden portion of the plug.
In this construction the threaded liningc is of greater diameter than the interior of the bowl so that when the plug f is screwed in place as indicated in Fig. 1, none of the metal parts of the bowl or the plug will be exposed to contact with the tobacco.
The plug can readily be removed and the sleeve and lining being of non-corrosive metal can be effectively cleaned.
I claim: V
A tobacco pipe, comprising a bowl having an open lower end, an interiorly threaded metallic lining of greater diameter than the bore of the bowl, said lining having an annular flange extending about the lower rim of the bowl, devices coact-ing with the flange and engaging the bowl for securing the lining to the bowl; combined with a plug having an annular stein, a metallic my hand in the presence of two subscribing threaded sleeve adapted to encircle the stem Witnesses. and having an annular flange extending about the inner face of the plug, and devices 5 coacting with the flange and engaging the l/Vitnesses:
plug for fastening the sleeve to the plug. C. H. ALMsTAEDT, In testimony whereofl have hereunto set WILLIAM MILLER.
