F. O. HAVENER.
01cm: MOISTENER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 4, 1913.

CIGAR-MOISTENEB.
Application filed June 4.
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK O. HAVEXER, a
citizen of the United States. residing at Pary kersburg. in the county of W'ood and State 1 of est Virginia. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigwir-Moisteners. of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to cigar and to bacco moistening means.
One object is to provide a simple and inexpensive article of the above mentioned class to be manufactured in several different sizes and cross sectional shapes. the most important and useful of which will be designed for travelers wherein a neat, coinpact and eflicint device will be much appreciated.
A further object is to provide a moistening means for cigars wherein the receptacle for the moistening medium may' be adjusted longitudinally for the various lengths of cigars. and which will include a simple arrangement whereby undue moisture is obviated.
The improvement consists broadly. in one instance. of a perforated container for a moistening pad. and further, of a receptacle of advantageous construction having the container convenientlv mounted therein.
In the application of my idea. the perforated container could be made in v uitable forms to fit various types of cigar cases to provide a false bottom for the latter and upon which the cigars in boxes could he placed.
More seeiticallv mv invention consists; of
an outer receptacle havin; an adjustable telescopic cover. one or more vent holes in 1 holes in the lower portion of the cover. the 3 said hole; in the receptacle and cover to re;: 5
ister under certain conditions: and a spring held removable contain r for the moistening pad.
Before referring spccificallv to the unmovement I wish to state that the f rm here do not depart from the broad principle of the improvement as set forth in the annexed claims.
pccification of Letters Patent.
the upper portion thereof. one or more vent l.
Patented Feb. 10, 1914.
1913. Serial No. 771,765.
' Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 rep resents an assembled longitudinal elevation of the device. the telescopic members being represented at the maximum closed position. Fig. .5 is a perspective view of the as seinbledinner container for the moistening means. Fig.3 is a plan view of the same showing the interior ofthe container for the moistcninn pad. the bottom perforated plate and the pad being removed. Fig. l is a view of the interior of the bottom perforated plate of the receptacle. and Fig. is a form of nolsture conta ning: pad.
Referring more spec fically to the. drawings in which like reference characters dc note like parts in the several views. A indicates an outer receptacle having a telescopic over B. the saidcovcr being provided with a vent hole C and the said outerrecepta'cle with a vent hole D. Yieldablv held in place by the spring E is the inner container 'for the moisture medium. the said container consisting: of a flanged top portion l (the same shape in plan view as the cross section of the receptacle Al provided with a. plurality of perforations G in the top wall thereof. In the side walls of said top p01.- vtion l" are rectangular slots H.
to the top ortion and also providedwith a plurality of perforations J. The said b0ttoin p rtion I is of ufiicient diameter and the proper cross section to establish a neat sliding tit within the top portion F. The up et flanged side wall K f the bottom portion l have rectangular cut outs. L rcgis tt'rinp: with the rw'ta'ngular slots ii in the periphery or ide wall of the top portion The -aid cut outs artfor the purpose of allowing th pring l'l to be freely expanded or contracted r-ei' uired.
ln the a-scnihled dew. .il represents the moi ture containing: pad shown in detail in Fig. 5. Thi 3 rd may he made of any desired ab orbent material and is to'be mounted as shown within the top and ahovc the bott m annular flanged plates of the concircular form with two outwardly protrud- A bottom portion I is also flanged in a. manner SlmllfllL ing ears E as shown. The spring is mounted within and extends through the slots H and the cut outs L in thewalls of the top and bottom portions F and L respectively,
and b reason of the spring being out at E it is cc to be compressed or to expand in a manner to secnrethe said container yieldably within the telescopic cover ofthe outer receptacle.
The manufacture of this article will be very cheap as it can be made erclnsively by blanking and forming dies of siock sizes and shapes. It will be very useful and convenient for cigar smokers by reason of'its telescopic principles any size cigars may be accommodated and the degree of moisture regulated by simply moving the two members of the outer receptacle until the air holes or Tents aforementioned register or by returning them to a staggered position.
The space occupied by the spring retainer acts as an air space between the moistener and the cigars, and also prevents the cigars from coming in direct contact with the moistener should the humidor be laid on its side or be inadvertently placed up side down.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a receptacle, a telescopic container for a moistening pad, a spring mounted Within the said container, the said spring extending through openings in the side Walls of the telescopic container members in a manner container for the to support the said moistener by reason of its bearing against the walls of the'said receptacle.
.2. In a removable container for a moistening means, the combination of a compressible spring mounted Within the said container, two flanged telescopic members provided with openings in'their side walls or flanged portions and forming the s id container, and a connecting means for he said members, the above mentioned spri pro trading through the saidopenings 1n the side walls of the telescopic members.
3. In combination with a receptacle, of a spring retained container for a moistening means, the said container foraied top and bottom annular flanged members one member being slidably mounted within. the other-in a manner to'form a spring retaining space between the perforated portions of the said members, said space serving to receive a spring, and as an air space between the moistening pador means and the contents of the receptacle.
In testimony whereof I-aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
