Description

D.DONALD. I CLAMP FOR DOORS, WINDOWS ND THE LIKE;
APPLIOATION FILED M r 1913.
' Patented Feb. 3, 1914.
DONALD DONALD, OF MASTERTON, NEW ZEALAND.
CLAMP FOR DOORS, WINDOWS, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 3,1914.
Application filed May 7, 1913. Serial No. 766,140.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DONALD DONALD, a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, and resident of Masterton, in the Provincial District of Wellington, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Improved Clamps for Doors, WVindows, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices used for clamping doors, windows and the like in any desired position, and consists of a bracket fixed to a door and near the bottom thereof, or upon the sash or jamb of a window or the like.
A cam pivoted to the bracket has an integral lever from which projects a lateral member by which the clamp is operated. The lever has an elbow by which the cam is held in correct operative position. An arm, adapted to spring under the action of the cam, has a roughened face to grip a floor or sash. i V
WVhen the bottom of a door closes upon a step, and for that purpose is raised a con siderable distance from the floor, an intermediate arm is used between the bracket and the cam.
The drawing herewith illustrates the invention.
Figure 1, is a front elevation, and Fig. 2, a plan of the invention, as applied to a door. Fig. 3, is a front elevation, and Fig. 4, a side elevation of the invention,'embodying the intermediate arm, and Fig. 5, is a side elevation of the invention as applied to a window.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the bracket 1 is fixed near the bottom of the door 2 by screws 3. This bracket is provided with a stop 4, and an arm 5 adapted to 'be depressed by a cam 6. The face 7 of the arm is roughened to grip a floor or window sash. The cam 6 is pivoted by a stud 9 to the bracket 1 and has an integral lever 10, which is provided with a lateral member 11 and an elbow 12.
The bracket is fixed at such a distance from the floor 14 that the cam 6 and the elbow 12 bear upon the arm 5 when the face 7 isin contact with the floor, as shown in Fig. 1.
When not in use the lever 10 is raised to the posit-ion shown by dotted lines in Fig.
1, in which position the said lever rests upon' the stop 4.
To bring the clamp into use, an operator places his foot below the member 11 and throws the lever 10 over from the position shown by dotted lines until the elbow 12 rests upon the arm 5 as shown in Fig. 1.
l/Vhen the bottom of the door is raised a considerable distance from the floor, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the cam 6 is pivoted upon one end of a'link 17 having a stop 18 against which the lever 10 is adapted to rest. The other end of the link 17 is pivoted to the bracket 1 and a lug 19 upon the said link is adapted to engage the stop 4, when the cam is in operative position. When the clamp is not in use the lever 10 is raised to rest upon its stop 18, and the link 17 and the cam are raised to the position shown 'by dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The cam and the elbow 12 are so shaped that when the cam is in operative position,
the center of the stud 9 falls vertically be tween the points of contact with the arm 5 of the said cam and elbow.
Referring now to Fig. 5, the bracket 1 is fixed to the parting rail 20 of the lower sash of a window. The arm 5 is adapted to spring outward, and to be pressed against the stile 21 of the upper sash, under the action of the cam 6'. The roughened face 7 of the arm 5 when forced outward by the cam 6 is adapted to grip and hold the upper sash from being raised or lowered, and the pressure of the cam prevents the sashes from rattling.
What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A clamp of the kind described, comprising a bracket, a link pivoted to the bracket, a cam pivoted to the link and having an integral lever with an elbow, substantially as set forth.
2. A clamp of the kind described, comprising a bracket and integral stop, a link pivoted to the bracket, a stop upon the link, a cam pivoted to the link, and a lever and elbow integral with the cam, substantially as set forth.
3. A clamp of the kind described, comprising a bracket, a link pivoted to the bracket, an arm integral with the link, a cam pivoted to the link and having an integral lever with an elbow, substantially as 10 set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
DONALD DONALD. \Vitnesses H. C. CAMPBELL, E. BIRRELL.
