Beit known. that I, CHARLES H. MiLLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowie, county of Montague, State of Texas, have invented an Improved. Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locks or devices for holding window-sash at any desirable position, and the object is to provide an inexpensive locking device which may be attached to windows and window-sash of ordinary construction and which will hold the sash rmly against movement upward or downward and which will be easily operated.
This invention is an improvement over the patent, No. 408,920, dated August 13, 1889.
Gther objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description, and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application and specification.

Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts'throughout the several views.
The improved locking devices are provided with a bracket l, which is to be attached to the window-facing by means of screws or nails at the upper and lower ends, respectively. The bracket 1 has a horizontal bearing 2, which has a slot 3 therethrough for a locking-bar 4. The locking-bar 4 is attached to the window-sash. This bar may have a series of notches 5 for a catch 6. A lockinglever 7 is ulerumed in the bracket l in a slot The lever 7 carries a locking-wedge 9, which cooperates with the catch 6. The catch 6 is pivotally mounted in a recess in the bearing 2 and is automatic in operation by reason of the pivot-point being closer to the bar 4 than the center of gravity of the catch. At the time the wedge is pressed down by the lever 7 the wedge will press the point 10 of the catch against the bar 4 to clamp the same against upward movement. It may be more practical to have the point 10 catch in one of the notches 5 of the locking-bar. bar 4 is locked against upward or downward movement while the wedge 9 is pressed down in the slot 3 with the bar 4. When the sash is to be raised, the lever is raised to release the wedge. The catch can then be released. The catch cannot be released until the wedge releases the bar. The bar cannot move upward while the catch is in engagement with the bar, because the catch would tend to press harder against the bar, and thus press the bar against the back wall of the slot, and thus wedgethe bar against upward movement.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sash-fastener comprising a bracket to be attached to the window-facing and provided with a bearing-arm intermediate the ends thereof, a locking-bar running through said bearing-arm to be attached to the window-sash, a lever fulcrumed in said-bracket and carrying a wedge clamping said bar in said bearing-arm against downward movement, and pivoted catch coperating with said wedge to engage said locking-har and clamp the same against upward movement.
2. A sash-fastener comprising a bracket to be attached to the window-facing, a bearingarm formed on said bracket intermediate the ends thereof and provided with a slot therethrough, a locking-bar having notches therein to be attached to the window-sash operating in said slot, a lever iulcrumed in said bracket and carrying a wedge to be inserted in said slot with said bar and to clamp said bar in said slot, and a catch pivotally mounted in a recess in the outer part of said bearingarm and engaging said bar and pressing the same against the back wall of said slot to clamp said bar in said slot.
