UNITED STATES PATET Q THADDEUS D. ALLEN, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
RAILWAY-TIE.
forth in the following description and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved tie showing the rails in applied position thereon, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, the rails and tie securing means being removed, Fig. 3.
is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig.
2, Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional. view on the line H of Fig. 2, but. illustrating the tie clamps in position on the ties, Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 8, Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4, and Figs. 7 and 8 are detail perspective views of the rail securing clamps.
Referring now to the drawings, in detail, the numeral 1 designates the improved tie. The tie is constructed of metal, and embodies an upper horizontally straight wall 2, a lower wall 3 which is arranged parallel to the upper wall and a central connecting web l. The tie, it will thus be noted, is substantially in the form of an I-beam. The tie comprises an elongated body portion which is laterally curved intermediate of its ends, and the central wall of the tie is, for a portion of its length, arranged in a plane with the straight longitudinal ends of the tie. IVith a tie so constructed, it will be noted that when the same is placed within the roadbed, and the said roadbed tamped around the tie, danger of the tilting of the tie, as well as the longitudinal movement of the tie or the lateral movement thereof, is entirely overcome.
The longitudinally straight portions of the tie, adjacent the ends thereof, have their upper wall provided with spaced openings arranged in pairs to the opposite sides of Specification of Letters Patent.

the connecting web. The openings are adapted to receive securing elements, in the nature of nuts and bolts, whereby the rail clamps 5 and 6 are sustained upon the tie. These clamps comprise metallic members of a width corresponding with the width of the tie. Each of the said members is formed with upwardly inclined lips which are shaped to correspond with the fishing space of the tie. One of the rail clamps, upon each side of the tie has its flat 'body portion provided with a reduced extension 7, the shoulder between the said extension and the body being arranged at a right angle to the longitudinal side of said clamp, and the shoulder is adapted to provide an abutment wall for the inner face of the co-acting clamp section, which is designated by the numeral 8.
From the above description, taken in connection with the drawings, the advantages of the improvement, will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A. rail tie comprising a metallic member including upper and lower horizontally straight walls and a central connecting web, and the said tie being laterally curved intermediate of its straight ends, and the said straight ends being arranged in the same longitudinal plane.
2. A tie for railway rails formed of an I-beam which is laterally curved intermediate its ends and its said ends arranged in the same longitudinal plane, the upper flange of the I-beam being provided with spaced openings arranged in pairs and disposed adjacent its opposite ends, and to the opposite sides of its connecting web, rail clamps, and securing elements passing through the clamps and through the openings in the top of the tie.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
