METALLIC RAILROAD TIE.
(Application filed Dec. 1B, 1900.)
(No Model!) UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
JOHN C. HAYWARD.AND MELVIN H. BRYSON, OF DRAVOSBURG, PENN- SYLVANIA.
M ETALLIC RAILROAD-TIE.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,639, dated May 7, 1901. Anplication filed December 18, 1900. Serial No. 40,263. (No model.)
1'0 all whom t Wtcty concern:
Be it known that We, JOHN C. HAYWARD and MELvIN H. BRYsoN, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Dravosburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railroad-Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in metallic railway-ties and fastening means for securing the rails thereto.
The invention also contemplates to provide eliicient means whereby rails may be easily laid and joined together.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
ln describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specificatiomand wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of a pair of rails having our improved cross-tie and fastening applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of one of the rails and fastening means. Fig. 3 is a detail view, in side elevation, of the cross-tie fastener. Fig. L is an end view of the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the outer removable clamping-block. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the plate arranged on the cross-ties.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the rails, and 2 the hollow steel crosstie, which is, preferably, rectangular in form. Upon the upper face of said steel cross-tie is arranged a securing-plate 3, having formed therein apertures 4 for the reception of rivets 5, which serve to securely fasten the said securing-plate to the upper face of the cross-tie.
The referencefnumeral 6 indicates the outer removable clamping-block, the latter having formed on its inner end a wedge-shaped shoulder 7, which is adapted to abut against the outer side of the web and upper base portion of the rail, said removable block having formed therein an opening 8, said opening 8 registering with an opening 9, formed in the upper face of the cross-tie 2, through which extends a bolt l0, carrying screw-threads l1 on its end for the reception of the nut l2.
lThe reference-numeral 14 represents the cross-tie fastener or brace-bar, which is secured to the cross-tie between the rails and engages the rails, this bar carrying inclined ends 15, in which are provided recesses 16, an opening 17 being formed through the said inclined portion, the latter opening registering with an opening 18 through the upper face of the cross-tie 2 for the reception of the bolt 19, carrying screw-threads 20 on its upper end to receive the nut 2l.
The reference-numeral 22 indicates a slot formed in the lower face of the rectangular hollow metallic tie.
From the above description it will be readily apparent that the rails may be easilyjoined together and secured to the ties in the manner as illustrated in the drawings and that many advantages are obtained by the use of our improved construction.
It will be noted that the rails are allowed a lineal movement providing for the expansion and contraction of the same, but that a lateral displacement of the same will be impossible.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a hollow rectangular metallic tie having open ends and having formed in its lower face a slot extending throughout its entire length, a brace-bar arranged on the tie between the rails, shouldered ends to engage the inner web and base of the rails having recesses formed therein, bolts extending through the upper face of said In testimony whereof We ax ourl signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.

ties, nuts secured on said bolts Seated in said recesses, clamping-blocks bolted to the tie outside the rails, shouldered ends formed integra-l with said clamping-blocks to engage I the outer web and base of the rails, securng- Witnesses:
plates attached to the upper 'face of said tie JOHN NOLAND, adjacent to said clamping-blocks. E. E. POTTER.
