To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL PrnLLrPs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Duquesne, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a metallic tie and rail fastener, and the objects of my invention are to provide metallic ties of the I-beam construction that can be used in lieu of the present type of wooden ties, and. to furnish the ties with rail fasteners that permit of a single rail or the confronting ends of rails being supported upon said ties.
Other objects of my invention are to provide metallic ties that can be easily and quickly clamped in a road-bed, and to furnish the ties with novel cushion-blocks that will insure a certain degree of flexibility in the supporting of rails.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a rail fastener that can be installed by unskilled labor to prevent lateral and vertical displacement of rails relatively to a tie, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now ing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rail joint in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the tie, and Fig. 4: is a cross sectional view of a portion of the same.

sponding in length. to the ordinary type of wooden tie. The top flanges 2 of the tie support the base flanges 3 of rails 4 that have the ends thereof confronting between the ties. At the sides of the rails t are longitudinal splice bars 5 that are secured to the webs of the rails '71. by bolts 6, nuts 7 or other fastening means. The splice bars 5 have lateral flanges 8 extending onto the top flanges 2 of the ties 1, and said lateral flanges are secured to the top flanges 2 by bolts 9, nuts 10 or other fastening means.
The lateral flanges 8, intermediate the ends thereof, are cut and sheared as at 11, and the material bent downwardly to provide depending side plates 12 and these plates are connected by two rows of bolts 13 that have nuts 14.
The ties 1 are arranged in parallelism and the confronting faces thereof, adjacent to the ends, are connected by metallic cushion blocks 15 that are formed integral with the confronting webs and flanges of the ties 1. The top and bottom surfaces of the blocks 15 are flush with the top and bottom survided with transverse openings to receive the bolts 18. The bolts 13 clamp the side plates 12 against the cushion blocks and the confronting ends of the rails are firmly supported thereon.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have devised a rectangular tie construction that can be used wherever a rail joint occurs. Ordinary ties or single I-beam .metallic ties can be laid between the joint ties.
A tie in accordance with my invention can be cast from light and durable metal and the construction of the tie provides practically a continuous tread for rolling stock.
What I claim is:- 1
In a metallic tie and rail fastener, the combination with rails, of parallel ties of the I-beam construction adapted to support said rails, metallic blocks having the ends thereof formed integral. with the confronting faces of said ties, adjacent to the ends thereof, splice bars engaging the sides of faces of the ties and said blocks are pro-' bars and engaging said rails and connected thereto, lateral flanges formed integral With said splice bars and secured tothe top flanges of said ties, depending side plates carried by said splice the sides of said blocks, and bolts and nuts connecting the depending side plates to said blocks. 4
