To all whom it may concern Bc it known that we, PETE C. MINOTTI and CUsI-I A. `MoDoNALD, citizens of the United States, residing at Hughey, in the county of Logan, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful limprovements in Permutation-Locks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a tull,
clear, and exact description ot' the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relatesto certain novel and useful improvements in permutation locks, which are especially adapted Jfor use in connection with the locking of window sashes.
In carrying out our invention, it is our purpose to provide a permutation lock which will be compact and inconspicuous when applied and will be formed of a few number of simple parts which will not easily get out of order. y
`With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a window showing the lower sash equipped with my window lock. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2 2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation showing the reverse tace of the window lock with portions removed to expose the permutation lock mechanism. Fig. et is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of the reverse face of the window lock with the permutation lock mechanism shown in position to release the locking bolt. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the push rod.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates the upper sash, 11 the lower sash, and 12 the window casing. Both upper and lower sashes may be equipped with the window locks comprising the subject-matter of this invention but for the purpose of brevity, the lower sash alone will be shown equipped with my improved window lock which will now be described.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Arranged lon the window casing is a combined guide and locking strip 14 having a plurality of orifices 15. Secured on the indoors side of one style of the lower sash is a base plate 16 having a housing 17 arranged on the outer face. The housing conceals the permutation lock mechanism. Arranged transversely on the base pla-te is a bolt 18 which is designed to terminally engage in any particular one of the orifices 15 to lock the sash in open or closed position as desired. The bolt is slidably fitted in. strap bearings 19 lcarried by the base plate and is normally held in operative position through the instrumentality of a helical spring 20 housed within one of the bearings and interposed between' the corresponding end of the bolt and a. stop 21 carried by the base plate. For releasing thebolt a bell crank lever 22 is mounted on the'inner side Yof the base plate, one leg of the bell crank lever terminally engaging in a slot 28 formed in the bolt, the opposite leg of the bell crank lever being held in intimate conitact with the lower end of a manually operatable push rod 24 by the controlling spring 20 of the bolt. Upon downward movement of the push rod the bell crank lever will be rocked on its pivot and move the bolt against the tension of its spring out of engagement with the locking strip.
The push rod is designed to be held against manipulation except by authorized persons and to attain this end the push rod is preferably formed of a single length of wire one end of which is bent to form an elongated eye 25, having a contiguous lateral loop extension 26 disposed in the plane of the eye and extending at a right-angle to the eye to form a handle, the extremity of the wire being bent to form a substantially L-shaped linger 27 the extremity of which is substantially parallel with and in the plane of the bight 27 of the elongated eye. The

Revolubly mounted within the casing are spaced disks 29 each disk being formed with a radial notch 30 in the edge, and furthermore being formed with an integral axial knob- 31 which extends through an orifice in the base' plate and is equipped with a pointer 32 which is adapted to register with the indicating characters on a circular scale 33 formed on the outer face of the base plate as shown. The linger 27 and bight 27 of the eye bear upon the peripheral edges of the respective underlying disks 29, and when both disks are turned until the notches 30 register With the finger and bight of the eye, the push rod may lbe manually depressed until the finger and bight of the eye engage in the notches, the bell crank lever being rocked on its pivot. during this movement ot' the push rod and serving to Withdraw the bolt from the locking strip as above described. Upon release of the push rod the controlling spring of the bolt returns the push rod to normal position Where upon both disks may be manually rotated through the instrumentality of the knobs until the notches are out of registration With the bight of the eye and the inger and in this position of th-e parts no movement can be imparted to the push rod.
It will be noted that the push rod 2l is offset obliquely near the handle 26 so that there is a spring bend produced Which will yield upon too great pressure being applied downward upon the handle so thatbreaking of the rod is prevented while at the same time too great compression with resultant breaking of the bolt controlling spring 20 is also prevented.
The pointers of the disks may be arranged at the notches therein but are preferably so arranged that when indicating predeten mined designation characters on the rel` spective scales the notches will be in operative position.
That is claimed, is
In a permutation lock, a spring pressed holt, a bell crank lever normally engaging said bolt, a guide eye above said lever, tunibler disks each having a notch in the edge, and a throw-off handle formed of a single piece of Wire Ibent T-shaped with the shank permanently engaged in said guide eye and bearing against said bell crank lever and with thel transverse head bearing upon the edges of said disks and adapted to engage in said notches, said shank being offset near said head and producing a` bend which yields upon too great pressure being applied to said handle and prevents breakage ot said handle and also prevents too greaty Compression with consequent breakage of the bolt controlling spring.
