O. B. BURNS. GONOEALABLB BED. APPLICATION FILED APE. 15,:1913,

IN VEN TOR,

ces,
1 To all school it may cmwem: I i
' it known that l, l3 litmus, e citizen of the States, residing at ---,Ssn Francisco, in the county of Sen disco and State of (Ieli'fornis, i are invent ed new and useful mprovements in Eon-- ceelable Beds, of which the fbllowing is a specification.
' The object of the present invention is to provide a simple construction of concealeble bed, which, when not in use, can be passed into a closet through the door of said closet, and can be extended from said closet into a room for use, the door of the closetthen being closed. in such concealable beds, the
bed is swung upward about a low horizontel axis into a vertical position in which it r'estssageinst a frame, and the frame and b'eddn-this vertical position are then moved from the room iutothe closet.
Iiissniuch as my invention is only concerned with the mechanism for so transferring the bed .and items from the room into the closet, or from extending the same from the closet into the room, the mechanism connected with the raising of the bed to a ver-' tical position, and other details of construc tion which form no part of my invention, are not here shown in detail, the bed itself being ftgonly indicated diagrammatically,
Inthe accompanying drawing, Figure l is a horizontal section ofthe Wells of a closetand of the room, Oil the line 11 0: Fig. 2, showing in vplertview the bed frame moveble'in and out of said closet; Fig. 2 is :1 broken front View of the some; is a vertical transverse section of the some; Fig, his a view, similar to Fig. l, of s. modifies tion of the invention used with closet of different form.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates {I dividingwall between e'closet :2 and a room 3, said wall having therein an opening 4 closed by the door 5. In upper and lower bearings 6, 7, secured to the rear side of said well 1, is a vertical shaft 8 from which extendupper and lower horizontal arms 9,
11), said arms being bent at right angles at a short distance from the shaft 8. The outer ends of sol d arms are connected to s vertical shaft 12, which passes through. upper and lower bearings 18, 14, connected to the top and bottom of the middle portions of the rear side of a bed frame 15, the bed itself, indicated diagrammaticallyat 16, being secured to said frame in any desired Letters Patent.

To place the bed in the closet, it is first moved into theposition indicated in the dotted lines at b, in which the arms 9, 10, are turned through substantially a right angle, thebed frame remaining parallel to its former position. The bed frame is then swung on the vertical shaft 12 to the positier. shown in dotted lines at c. In this position rollers 22, carried at the top and bottom of the bed frame respectively enter the open ends of upper and lower ciannels 23, 2 1, which guide the bed in its-movement. As the arms 9, 10 further turn on theaxis of the vertical shaft 8, the rollers 22 travel in a direction directly backward from the openit will be obscrvedthat by the above 0011-.
trivence the bed frame is always maintained. at a considerable distance from the opposite of the door opening, so that a bed of considerable width and. thickness can by this means he passed through a comparatively narrow opening. When the bed is withdrawn the slots 18, 19, are concealed by shutters 25', hinged as shown at 26, at their upper edges, which shutters are automatically raised, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, by the arms in moving outward through the slots; It is obvious that the door can be closed when the bed. in the extended position or when the bed is withdrawn into the closet, and it is also seen that in this hitter position ample room is efiordcd to enter the closetthrough the door. It is also obvious that, if desired, the bed can be lowered for use in the position shown at Z) as well as in the position shown at a.
Fig. 4: shows a modification of the construction for use with a. closet of much smaller length and somewhat greater width.
In this position longer arms essary.
