CONTROLLER-REGULATOR.

To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ELBE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maspeth, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Controller-Regulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in whichi Figure l is a plan of my device partly broken away; Fig. 2 isa section on lines II-II of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan similar to F ig. 1 showing the detent in a somewhat different position, and Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 are sections on lines V-V of Fig. 3, the detent in Fig. 5 being in the corresponding position to that shown in Fig. 3; Figs. 8 and 9 show a modified form of detent; and Fig. 10 is a modification of the handle hook.
My invention relates to that type of controller regulators which have a rotatable cover and which are mounted on the top of the controller casing.
It consists in providing means for preventing the full voltage of the vline current from being suddenly sent through the motor, which would result in injury to the windings of the motor. To this end I provide a timing element which is not only accurate but is also positive in its action.
Further objects of my invention are to provide regulators which can be used upon controller casings without removing the rain cap which is ordinarily attached to the controller shaft, and means for attaching the handle to the cover of the regulator- Referring to the drawings, 2 is the top of the controllercasing; 3 is the star wheel of the controller; 4 is t-he controller shaft; 5 is the rain cap which is normally attached to the shaft; 6 is the regulator base having slotted extensions 7 by which it is attached to the controller top 2 by the bolts 8; 9 is a rotatable cover mounted on the base 6; 10 is a projection from the cover 9 upon which is pivoted a hook 11 adapted to fit over and hold the shank 12 of the handle 13 in operative connection with the cover 9 of the handle 13; 14 is the usual abutment positioned on the controller .top 2 from which the regulator is adjusted, and the adjustment in this instance I prefer to make by means of the set screw 15.
On the internal periphery of the cover 9 are located a series of stops 16, and depending from thetop of the cover 9 by means of a series of posts 17 is a ring 18 having a series of cams 19 arranged around the periphery thereof.
2O is a detent having a toe 21, a heel 22, and a shank 23, and is positioned in a pocket 24 of the base 6. This pocket 24 is located in peripheral circumference of the base immediately below the stops 16, and the detent 20 is held in the pocket 24 by the overhang 25 and the bottom plate 26. The plate 26 is always held in tension against the shank 23 of the detent by means of the spring 27. On Athe inner face of the detent is located a lug 28 which is adapted to contact with the cams 19 by which the recessed heel 22 of the detent 20 is forced on and oif the shelf 29 of the pocket 24 as well as into and out of contact with the stops 16.
The base has an annular central opening 30 through which a dependent flange 31 of l the cover 9 projects. The exterior surface of this flange is threaded so that the ring 32 may be screwed thereon in order to hold the base and the cover in operative connection. The opening through the base and cover is made suiiiciently large so that the regulator may be placed on the controller top without removing the rain cap 5, as is usual with such devices.
The operation of my regulator is as follows: The handle 13 is put on the shaft 4, and the hook 11 of the cover 9 locks the cover into operative connection with the shaft. Beginning with the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position the current is turned oif, the handle 13 is rotated in a clockwise direction, and the cam 19 strikes the lug 28 of the detent 20 and raises it to the position shown in Fig. 5. Further rotation then causes the cam 19 to pass under the lug 28. This lifting of the detent forces its toe 21 against the vertical face of the stop 16, and the stop forces the recessed heel 22 of the detent against the shelf 29 of the pocket 24 and checks the rotation of the cover. No amount of forward pressure on the handle 13 will cause the detent 2O to be released from the stop 16. It can only be released by retracting the handle 18 sufficiently so that the rear side of the cam 19 will strike the lug 28 and dislodge the detent from its seat on the shelf 29. This is shown in Fig. 6 in which the full lines indicate the stops 16 and the cam 19 in the position in which the advancement of the handle 13 and the cover 9 has been checked, and the dotted lines of the figure indicate the retraction of the handle 13 for a slight distance in order to dislodge the detent 20 from its seat on the shelf 29 when it drops back into the pocket 24 to the position shown inl Fig. 4. The operator then advances the handle 13 until the next cam 19 strikes the lug 28 of the detent 2O and forces the toe 21 up against the succeeding stop 16, the detent is then released as described above, and the handle can then be further advanced.
In turning o the current the inclined surfaces of the stops 16 strike the beveled toe 21 of the detent 20 and force it down into the pocket 24, or the inclined back surface of the cam 19 strikes the upper inclined surface of the lug 28 and forces it down into the pocket 24 in the same manner that it acts to dislodge the detent 2O when its current is being turned on. Whether the stops 16 or the cam 19 first strikes the detent and forces it down out of contact with the stops 1G depends on the position of the cover at the time the handle begins to be rotated in the reverse direction. From the foregoing it will be seen that the detent furnishes no obstruction to rapid cutting off of the current.
The detent 2O reaches a neutral position when dislodged from the shelf 29, in which neutral position it is out of contact with the stops 16, as is shown in Fig. 4. From this neutral position, as is shown in Fig. 7 the detent is forced downward by each cam 19 which strikes it during the oif movement of the device, but is constantly being pressed up to neutral position by the spring pressed plate 26. It will thus be seen that during the on movement of the device that the cams 19 cause the lug 28 of the detent 20 to ride up over the cams to contact with the stops 16 until the on position is reached; while in the off movement the lug 28 is depressed and rides under the cams 19 until off position is reached.
In Figs. 8 and 9 I show a modification of my invention in which the detent 20 reciprocates in the pocket 24, and also is rotated through an arc of about 450 in order to permit the lug 28 to be seated on the shelf 29. In the lower end of the detent is a slot 33 in which the end of the plate 26 fit-s.
rIhis plate acts to retract the detent 20 into the pocket 24 when the lug 28 is dislodged from the shelf. Its operation is practically identical with my preferred form.
In Fig. 10 I show a modified form of the handle hook which is designed to fit over the shanlrs of controller' handles of various sizes. rI`he hook 11 has a slot 34 therein through which the pivot of the projection 10 passes, and the relation of the hook to the handle shank can be adjusted by means of the screw 35 and the spring 36.
It will be seen that many changes may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from my invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a controller regulator, a series of stops, a detent, a series of cams for moving said detent into and out of contact with said stops during the movement of the regulator in one direction, the said detent being so positioned that when the movement is in the opposite direction, the said detent will be out of engagement with said stops.
2. In a controller regulator, a series of stops, a detent, a series of cams for moving said detent into contact with said stops, positively acting means for dislodging said detent from said stops, the said detent being so positioned that when the movement is in the opposite direction the said detent will remain out of engagement with said stops.
3. In a controller regulator, a rotatable cover, a series of cams within said cover and carried thereby, a series of stops located above said cams, a detent, said detent being adapted to be forced into the path of said stops by the forward movement of said cams, and to be removed from said path by the reverse movement of said cams.
4. In a controller regulator, a rotatable cover, a controller shaft, a handle on said shaft, a projection on said cover, said projection having a hook pivoted thereto, said hook being adapted to engage the shank of the handle, and to hold said cover in rotatable engagement with said shaft.
5. In a controller regulator, a controller box having a controller shaft projecting therefrom, a rain cap fixed to said shaft, in combination with a regulator attached to said controller, said regulator having a Cover and an annular opening therein adapted to fit snugly around the said rain cap.
6. In a controller regulator, a series of stops, a detent, a series of cams for moving said detent into contact with said stops, a locking seat for the reception of said detent to hold the same positively in locking position against said stops, and means for dislodging said detent from said locking seat, the said detent being so positioned as to be removed from the path of said stops during the reverse movement.
7.
