Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed April 11,1906 fierial N0x 311,101.
To a who/)1 it "may concern.-
Be it known that we, EDWARD S. Massin and Jens HENRY 111;. wKINs, citizens of the United States, and residents of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Circuit- Oontroller, of which the following is a speci iication.
Our invention is in nature a circuit closing timer, or controller, employed in the sparker circuit of explosive engines. I
The object had in view is to provide means of the character stated, adapted for general circuit closing uses, but specially intended 'l'or use in sparker circuits as aforesaid.
The invention consists oi the peculiar construction and arrangement of p arts shown by the :u companying drawing, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
in the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan or front view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view.
in the practice of our invention, we employ any suitable and properly insulated. case A, having its front closed by transparent material B, the same being secured on the case A, by a clamping plate 0 and set screws D, will be understood. in. the case are ')rovided cams E, arranged on the end. of a shaft extended into the case indicated by dotted lines F. it will be understood that the shaft 1* is to have proper operative connection with working parts of the engine.
G denotes a screw threaded tube extending into the case A, as shown by Fig. 2. "he inner end cl the tube is constructed into a seat 11, adapted for support of a circular body or ball 1.
J, J denote j am-nuts arranged on the outer end. oi the screw threaded tube G, the nut J being more in the form of a cap adapted to close the tube opening, and is constructed with. an extended screw threaded shank K, forming with the nuts L, suitable binding post for connection of the circuit wire M. it
will be understood that circuit is completed through the engine parts as usual.
in the tube G, we arrange a spring N, and the same is placed under tension holding the ball 1. yieldingly seated, by adj ustnwnt of the nut J, as will be understood.
The construction of our invention will be understood from the above description. In its use, the shaft F rotates the cams E will contact the under portion of the ball I. During the contacting action, the ball is li'ltedv from its seat H, see F 2, and it is obvious that as the contacting cam. E leaves the ball, the latter will be rotated to position, presenting a new contacting surface for engagement with the following cam, and it is further apparent, owing to the ball being free as to its rotary movement, that through. "frictional engagement of the cams thm'ewith, its projecting surface, when seated, will be constantly changed, and thus insuring con'lplete closure oi the sparker circuit, in timed arrangement, according to operative connection oi" the shaft F with moving parts of the engine.
We claim:
In a circuit controller and in conibination, a casing, a rotatable sha'l t extending into the casing, a rigid circuit contact device inv the casing, said contact device being arranged on the rotatable shalt adapted to be rotated thereby, a tube arranged extending into the casing, having inner and outer projecting ends, the tube being provided with screwthread adjustment, an inner l'lange or seat on the inner end of said tube, a conductive ball device arranged in. the tube to be seated. on said flange and project beyond the tube, adapted to be engaged by the rigid rotatable contact device, adjusting nuts on the outer end. of the tube, a spring holding the ball device yieldingly seated, and a binding post on. the outer end. of the adjustable tube.
EDVV'ARD S. MASSIE. JOHN HENRY HAW KINS.
