Description

` lUNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
ISAAC S. TURNER, OF OENTRALIA, WASHINGTON.
BINDING-SCREW.
l lSEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent`No. 723,082, dated March 1'7, 1903.
Application filed May 22, 1902.
Tai-@ZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ISAAC S. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centralia, in the county of Lewis and State oi' Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binding-Screws; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, `such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to binding-screws for securing electric conducting-wires.
The object of the invention is to provide a binding-screw which is simple of construction, effective in use, and comparatively inexpensive of, production, which is adapted to hold the wires securely without the necessity of soldering them, and in which the parts are not liable to become casually disconnected.
With the above and other objects in View, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, said invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, dened in the appended claim,'and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view showing Vthe binding screw or post in connection with a suit-` Fig. 2 is a central vertical secable support. tion of the same, showing the thumb-nut disengaged from the wire.
.The numeral l in the drawings represents a suitable support apertured for the passage of a sorew-threaded'stem or post 2, provided at one end with a head 3, which may be of suitable form to receive a Wrench or niched for the reception of a screw-driver bit. One end of this screw carries a washer L and adjusting and locknuts and 6, While the other end carries a thumb-nut 7, having a milled u surface by which it may be conveniently manipulated. The bore of this nut is enlarged at one end and smooth-surfaced, as shown at snn No.1oa526. (No modem causing the production of a shoulder 9,
`which abuts against the head 3 to limit the Vmovement of the thumb-nut in one direction. The thumb-n ut 7 is adapted to clamp the wires against one of the'jam-nuts on one side of the support, while the washer and nut bear upon the opposite side of the support and hold the screw from movement in either direction, and in the event of loosening the nut outward movement thereof will be limited by saidshoulder contacting with the head 3 of the screw. Hence it will be seen that the parts cannot easily become displaced, and therefore are not liable to be lost by coming loose. It will also be seen that the device is of maximum simplicity and may be manufactured and sold at small cost. The double adjustment afforded by the independent movement of the screw and nut is also important, while the action of the nut in securely holding wires without the necessity of soldering them facilitates the operation of placing the .wires in position, and the importance is more readily seen when repairs are necessary to be made or changes, as in telephone instruments, '&c.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A binding device for cond noting-Wires comprising a screw-threaded stem provided with a head at one end, a binding-nut adjustable on the headed end of the stem and having its bore enlarged to form a socket to receive the head and a shoulder to contact therewith, and a holding-nut upon the opposite end of the stem, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my handin presence of two subscribing witnesses. ISAAC S. TURNER.v
Witnessesz 0. S. NORDLUND, J. R. BUXTON.
