RATCHET-DRILL.
specification of Lettersratent. Patented Sept, 9, 1919.
Application filed Marc a, 1919. anno. 280,444.
To all whom it may concern Be it knmvn that I, Fnoon H. PIERSON, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at New Haven, in the "county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Im novement in Ratchet-Drllls; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and enact description of the same, and Wlllffill sa d drawings constitute part of this applicatlon, and represent, in-- v j Figure 1 a sile view of a ratchet drill constructed in accordance with my invention, the end of the handlebelng broken away. l l pp n Fig. 2 an underside view oi the same.
Fig. 3 a top or plan view thereof I Fig. l a sectional view on the l ne i -d of Fig. 3. l V
Fig. 5 a broken view illustrat ngthe operation of the feeding pawl.
Fig. 6 a side view of a modified form of operating nut.
This invention relates to an improvement in ratchet drills and particularly to ratchet. drills adapted to be operated 'byhand and where considerable power is necessary, the object of the invention being to provide means whereby the drill is not only turned to cut, but the drill is fed longitudinally so as to continue the cutting without other means for feeding; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described ancl particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a head 10 recessed to form a chamber 11 and provided at its upper edge with an outwardly projecting flange 12. Extend ng through the lower end 13 of the chamber 1s a threaded post 1 1 of a chuck 15 adapted to receive and contain a drill 16. On thls threaded post is a long nut 17 which projects upward above the upper end of the head and on this nut, which is angular, 1s a ratchet washer 18 by which the nut may be turned and through which the nut may have longitudinal movement. This ratchet rests upon the upper edge of the head andrmay be held securely in connection therewith by means of a dog 19. Mounted around the head is a collar 20 which bears against the underside of the flange 18 and held 1n place by a lock-nut 21 so that the collar is free to rotate. This collar is formed on one side with an outwardly projecting lug 22 in which is mountedan upwardly projecting pin and the collar is also formed with an outwardly projecting boss 2 1 formed with a chamber 25'and with anopening 261mm the chamber through the outer end of the 'boss. In this chamber is a radiallymovable pawl 27 adapted to engage with ratchet teeth 28 on the outersurface of the upper part ofthe head. This ratchet is formed with a stem 29 projectingoutward through the opening 26, and in the projecting end of the stem is a handle pin 30 adapted to ride upon the end of the boss or enter" the notch 31therein so as to permit the pawl to engage with the teeth on the head or bewithrawn for engagement therewitlnthe pawl being normally forced into engagement with the ratchet by means of a spring 32. Mounted upon the pin 23 is a handle 33, tl is lian-- dle being formed with a segmental arm 34: in
which is mounted an adjusting screw 35 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear, and
also connected with the handle is a pawl 36 adapted to engage with the teeth ofthe. i
ratchet washer 18. This pawl is normally held an engagement with its ratchet j'by means 0t a s'pring actuated plunger37 mounted Inthe end of the handle inline with the hub 38 of the pawl which isformed with a notch 39 into which the end of the plunger 37 may enter so as to lock the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet washer 18. Mounted in the upper end of the nut 17 is a centering point 40, and it may here be mentioned that the terms upper and lower are relative terms as the device may be operated in any position. The ratchet drill is used in connection with a frame or holder of some kind consisting of a bearing ll for the point 10 and an anvil 42 upon which the work may rest.
In operation the handle is first turned until the end of the screw 35 comes in con tact with the side of the collar or with the side of the lug thereon, and the time of contact will be determined by adjusting the screw 35. This movement determines the ratchet washer 18, turns the nut 17 on the stem 14 of the chuck 15 so as to turn the nut off from the stem so as to extend the point 40 and force it against its bearlng 4:1, or in other words, to force-the drill downward without turning it. The handle then comes into contact wlth the collar 20, and as the pawl 24 is in engagement with the teeth 28 that collar will be turned so as to turn the head and with it. the chuck and the drill.
For the purpose of adjustment the pawl 24 may be withdrawn so that the collar is free to be turned on the head without moving the drill. It will thus be seenthat in the first movement of the handle the drill is first advanced and then the power applied for cutting. While I prefer to form the ratchet washer separate from the nut, the nut itself may be circular in cross-section and formed with ratchet teeth 43 as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the pawlcoacting with these teeth in the same way as with the teeth on the ratchet washer, the operation of the device being exactly the same in both cases. v a l I claiini- I 1. A ratchet drill comprisin' a head pro vided with external ratchet teet and formed with a chamber, a chuck connected with said head and formed with a threaded post extending upward through said chamber, a
" nut on said post, a collar mounted on said head, a pawl carried by said collar and engaging ith the teeth on the head, a handle piyotall'y connected with said collar and adapted to turn the same, a pawl mounted on said handle and adapted to turn said nut.
2. formed with a chamber and with external ratchet teeth, a chuck connected with said head and formed with a threaded post ex- A ratchet drill comprising a head i tending upward through said chamber, a nut on said post, a collar surrounding said head, a spring-actuated pawl mounted in said collar and adapted to engage with the ratchet teeth on the head, said collar formed 7 with an outwardly projecting arm, a pin carried by said arm, a handle mounted on said pin, an adj ustin screw mounted in said handle and adapte to engage with said collar, a pawl also mounted on said handle and adapted to turn said nut.
3. A ratchet drill comprising a head formed with a chamber with an outwardly extending flange at its upper end and with external ratchet teeth, chuck connected with said head and formed with a threaded 0st extending upward through said champlunger adapted to hold said pawl in en gagement with the ratchet washer.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
