JOHN G. BAUER, 0F WARSAW, NEW YORK.
GIGAR-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 28, 1911.
Patented Jan. 27, 1914:.
Serial No. 668,233.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN G. BAUER, zen of the United States, residing at Warsaw, in the county of Wyoming and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to boxes and the manufacture of the same and has especial reference to cigar boxes.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved box especially adapted for. cigars.
The invention further has for its object to provide a cigar box which will be light, and practically indestructible and which will got gather dampness or permit the cigars to The? invention further has for its object to provide a new and improved method of making paper boxes especially adapted for cigars.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a portion of the structure of the box in the course of being made. Fig. 2 is a plan view in horizontal section of the completed box. Fig. 3 is a view in cross section showing the box completed with the cover thereon.
The box as constructed in accordance with this invention is made as follows :A rectangular box 1 of a suitable size adapted to be used for a cigar box and preferably formed of pasteboard is provided. A strip of paper 2 is wound about the box 1 as shown in Fig. 1 until a number of layers of the strip 2 is formed making a thick out side covering 3 extending about the sides of the box 1. The strip of paper 2 is of such a width that when wound about the box 1 it projects slightly above the edge of the box thereby forming a shoulder on which the cover of the box rests as hereinafter set forth. The layers formed by the strip of pap-er 2 wound about the box 1 are secured together in any suitable manner by some ad-' hesive substance. The thickened covering 3 citiextending about the sides of the box 1 is then covered by a strip of paper 4 preferably made to indicate cedar wood and of a sufficient width to permit its upper edge to be folded over the top of the thickened covering 3 and the edge of the box 1, said folded strip 5 being shown in Fig. 3. The strip 4 is glued or otherwise secured to the covering 3. A cover 6 is provided which rests on the shoulder formed by the upper edge of the box 1 and the thickened covering 3, and said cover 6 has a strip of paper 7 similar to the paper 4 extending over the under side thereof and over its front edge and over the top and down over the back of the box, and over the bottom of the same. The cover is hinged to the back of the box by means of a strip 8 of suitable material which is fastened to the top of the cover 6 and at its rear side and to the back of the completed box beneath the outside strip 7.-
By means of having a box constructed as hereinbefore described the cost of manufacture is greatly reduced and a light box is provided which cannot crack or break, which is practically air tight and strong at the sides and ends as well as at the corners; and which is especially an improvement in cigar boxes since they are generally fragile and are apt to be broken by the weight of the boxes resting upon one another. A box constructed as herein described will also keep the cigars in good condition, free from drying out or losing their flavor which is apt to be the case where wood is employed which absorbs the moisture of the cigars and also the moisture from the outside.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is A box of the class described comprising an inner member of relatively thick material, an outer Wall formed of a plurality of layers of thin material closely fitted together and extending above the upper edge of saidrelatively thick material for constituting a lid receiving ledge along the upper edge of said relatively thick material, said layers of thin material extending around the entire outer face of said relatively thick material,
and a sealing strip extending over the upper In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my edge of said thin sheets of material and over signature in presence of two Witnesses.
said u er ed 'e of said relativel thick material l id beii ig secured to the iii ner face of JOHN BAUER said relatively thick material for constitut- WVitnesses:
ing a smooth covering for the upper edge A. LINZY,
of said box. JOHN STREETER.
