The carton has been developed with especial reference to use for packaging such articles as small boxes or pz-icrages of cigaicttcs and the advantages of the invention will be sufiiciently understood by reference to such a use, although it is not limited to such use and is available tor packaging an titles and commodities of great variety.

Boxes or cartons heretofore used for enclosing a group of cigarette pacluig'a-as and other commodities have usually been made largely t card-board or other relatively heavy and stitt material in order to permit of rapid production of containers on a large scale, and to tucilitate filling and closing the cartons eitucr by hand or machine operations on it large production has Boxes. heretotore used for such purposes have also usually been ot such a nature that in order make the package dirt and moisture proof the )acked carton has be enclosed in another wrapping. such glaoine or other puper, with evidentadditionol expense.

An important object of my invention is to provide :1 cont iner or cart-on which may be made ot rclatiirly thin and inexpensive paper; which also odapted to; rapid and mechanical production on a large scale, either by hand or machine. operations; which readily filled with goods o the desired closs and readily closed by hand or machine operations on a large out-put basis; and which when completed by closing. irovides in itself a substantially dirtand moistureproof covering for the contained goods. without the necessity for 'further wrapping.

To attain these objects the carton comprises, in one embodiment a main or body portion. usually of prismatic form with one open side, relatively thin paper. which mar be of varyi V nodes, bu r the sake of economy may oe relatively cheap quality, constructed and arranged so that Specification of Letters Patent.

marginal portions may be turned outward and after the body is filled a cover or top sheet may be placed upon the open side of the body and odhesively secured to the body margins and the marginal portions of both the body and cover then turned down and udhesively secured to sides of the body. Desirably, in mo t cases, a filler piece of paper or card-board is placed upon the contents of the package and beneath the cover piece before or as the latter is applied. and this filler may in some cases be adhesively secured to the cover piece.

The characteristics and advantages of the invention are further sutliciently explained in connection with a detailed description of the accompanying drawings which show one exemplifying embodiment of the invention. After consideringthis it will be understood that many variations may be made within the principles of the invention and 1 contemplate the employment ot any structures which are within the scope ot the zippcnded claims.

The main or body portion B of the container is desirably formed from a. single piece of paper or relatively thin card-board which may be shaped as shown in Fig. 1, although the blank form and details of construction of the carton body may be varied greatly. 6, which in this case extended from the ends of the side wings. Desirably the blank scored or creased along tne lines 7 to facilitate a subsequent folding and. out along the lines 8 to separate the corner laps from the end wings. Adhesive 9 is applied to the upper surfaces of the corner laps.

This blank is folded up as shown in Fig. 2 with the side and end wings vertically arranged. and adjacent to each other, and

the corner laps 6 are then folded. in and adhesively secured to outer surfaces of the end wings. Margins 3 and 5 of the side and end wings extend up in line with their re spective wings. At a suitable step in the formation of the carton adhesive stripes 10 are applied to outer surfaces of thesemargins 3 and This adhesive application may be made at the stage represented in Fig. 2, or later as may be desired.

The body may be filled with suitable contents, such as a plurality of boXes A of cigarettes as shown in Fig. 3, at any time after the box formation of the body blank has been sufliciently completed. hen the commodity for which the carton is: intended has a standard size such as a cigarette box or package, the carton body is, of course, designed so that it will receive asuitable number of the commodity packages in compact layer and row arrangement. The bodies may be filled before or after margins 3 and 5 are turned outward to substantiallyhorizontal position as shown in Fig. 3. The filled body is now ready for completion Desirably a filler piece F, of a size to closely lit the interior of the carton body is laid upon the contained articles, as shown in Fig. 3,'substantially one half of the filler piece being there broken away to disclose the contents of the pack age. This filler piece protects the package contents and also assists in reinforcing and stiffening the cover piece, and also aids in opening the package, as hereafter explained. In some cases the filler piece is desirably sociated with the cover piece C, F i 1 8., and the two pieces are then put in position upon the filled carton body.

The cover piece C is usually of relatively thin paper and it may in fact be of somewhat thinner stock than the body material, especially when it is reinforced by a filler The thickness and grade of the cover paper may be chosen with due regard to structural requirements, economy or the desired package finish. One surface of the cot er piece is coated with. adhesive 12 and the cover is then laid upon the/carton body in contact with the filler piece and extended margins 3 and 5, or the tiller piece is first associated with the adhesively coated cover as shown in Fig. 8, and the two are then applied to the package, the filler piece serving the purposes above in- 'iooate the margins of the cover properly in relation to body margins 3 and in either case the cover is properly pressed in position with its margins in contact with body margins 3 and 5 so that these portions adhere together throughout the area of body margins o and .5, corner portions of the cover being free from any portions of the body material. The package is then in the condition shown in Fig. 4-, in which an upper side portion of the body and cover material are torn away to show the package contents and a portion of the filler piece.

The horizontally extending margins ltand 15, each comprising marginal portions of the cover and of the body material are now folded down and secured against the sides and ends of the body structure as shown in Fig. 5, these margins being re tained by adhesive stripes 10 previously agplied to the under sides of body margins 3 and at any suitable stage in the production process, as previously explained. The cover corners 13 are disposed of either by inturning them under adjacent portions of margins 14- or 15, or by folding them over upon outer surfaces of these marginal portions as shown at 16, Fig.

The complete container or package thus produced is substantially dirt-proof and may be substantially moisture-proofed to the extent desired. by providing materials which are properly waxed or oiled. No additional outer wrapping is needed for the packages. lVhile made of relatively thin and flexible material. the packages hare sub stantial rigidity ample for the desired purpose by reason of co-operation of the package contents with the closely fitting carton members.

The package may be readily opened by running a finger nail along the upper surface of the package very close to the sides and ends whereupon the cover paper 0 will be easily severed between the upper edges of the body side wall. material and the adjacent edges of the filler piece F. The partial severing of the coter for th purpose of opening the package is indicated in F 6, in which a corner of the cover and connected filler piece are raised showing a portion of the package contents.

The paclmgehaving the described char acteristis especially valuable for retail vending because the cover may be partially or entirely severed to remove part or all of the contents of the carton and as long as any of the contents remains the carton may be used as a container, instead of being practically destroyed in the act of opening the package to get at any of the contents. as usually happens with containers heretofore provided for articles of this class.

A container comprising a main portion or body of moderately thick paper having an open side and having marginal portions at the open side, a filler piece located in the open side of the body, and a cover piece of relatively thin paper adhesively secured to the filler piece and having margins secured to the marginal portions of the bod the combined marginal portions of the b0 y and cover being adhesively secured to side portions of the body.

A container comprising a thin and ilexible paper body having an open side and margins at the open side, a filler piece substantially coextensive With the open side of the body, and a cover piece of relatively thinner paper adhesively secured to the tiller piece and having extended margins adhesively secured to the margins of the body, the combined body and cover margins being turned down against side and end portions of the body and adhesively secured thereto.

A carton comprising a body of mod erately thick paper in substantially box form with one open side and having margins at sides and ends of the open side, a filler piece of relatively heavy paper inserted in the open side of the body, and a cover piece of relatively thin paper adhesively secured to the filler piece and having margins adhesively secured to the body margins, the combined cover and body margins being turned down and adhesively secured to sides and ends of the body structure.
