Be it known that I, JAMES C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in vehicles, and more particularly to the class of vehicles which are commonly known as invalid chairs by reason of their adaptability to the transportation of invalids who are incapacitated in one way or another.

I am aware that hitherto invalid chairs have been provided with leg rests and foot boards pivoted thereto, which may be held in certain positions, but no vehicles of this character have been produced provided with the particular combination of elements which I employ and by which I realize a structure in which the foot board may be held in a position which is substantially an extension of the leg rest, or in a position which is substantially in a position at right angles thereto but folded against the leg rest and securely and firmly held in each of these positions. It frequently happens that the invalid desires to stretch out the leg, or in some cases it is necessary that he should do so. By providing a structure in which the foot board can be positioned as an extension of the leg rest, I can accommodate him. On the contrary it is frequently desired that the lower part of the limb should be extended substantially at right angles to the upper part when it is desired that the foot rest should be substantially at right angles to the leg rest.

I aim to produce mechanism which can conveniently be handled by the invalid, who on account of his incapacity is incapable of manipulating a complicated device, or who, were he physically capable, would in all probability be unskilled in the art of mechanics. It is necessary that these parts should be firmly secured in position and desirable that none of the parts should be removable to prevent their being lost.

Other objects of my invention and the in vention itself will be clear from the particular description of the embodiment illustrated in the drawing.

Figure 1 is an illustration of a chair showing an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of apparatus showing an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the apparatus shown in Fig. 2 in one position. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the apparatus shown in Fig. 2 in a' second position. Fig. 5 is a view of a modification of the apparatus shown in Fig. 2 illustrating a second embodiment of my invention. F ig. 6 is the apparatus shown in Fig. 5 in a different position.

Referring now to the drawings and to the particular embodiment of my invention illustrated therein at 7 is shown the frame of a vehicle, such as an invalid chair. At 9 is shown a leg rest carried by the frame and preferably pivoted thereto by any suitable pivotable connection which is not illustrated. In actual practice it is desirable to provide two leg rests 9, one for each of the legs of the invalid. These rests may be moved to any suitable position. In Fig. l one of the rests is shown hanging substantially vertical to the seat 8 and the other extended in a horizontal position. Any suitable means may be provided for holding the rests in position. I have shown a saw-tooth rack 10 which engages with a pin upon the frame, which is not illustrated, but which will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.

At the end of each leg rest I provide a foot board 11, which is connected thereto, being preferably pivoted to swing about the end of the leg rest. It is desirable to hold this foot board in a number of positions with respect to the leg rest. For example, when the invalid desires to extend the leg straight outward, the leg rest is elevated into the position shown on the left hand side of the chair illustrated in Fig. l, the foot board being extended straight outward from the rest as illustrated, whereas when it is desired that the leg shall hang free, the edge of the chair, the leg rest 9 and foot board 11 should be moved to the position shown on the right hand side of the chair. One of the objects of my invention is to provide a structure which will enable the invalid to move the leg rests and foot boards to these positions and hold them firmly there. I provide suitable means upon these two parts for accomplishing these ends. In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs.

2, 3 and 4 I provide a plate 12 which may be mounted upon the edges 13 of the leg rests and fastened there by any suitable means, such as screws 14. A second member 15 is provided to be mounted upon the edges 16 of the foot rests. The members 12 and 15 are best pivoted together, as shown at 17 and as illustrated, this pivot is intermediate the ends of the member 15, the free end 18 thereof being provided with a hook 19 adapted to engage a pin or other suitable member 20 upon the leg rest, and here shown upon the member 12. l/Vhen it is desired to extend the foot rest into the position shown in the left hand side of Fig. 1, the member 15 is moved until the hook 19 engages the pin 20 as shown in Fig. 3. A third member, which is here shown as a movable rod 21, is pivoted in a hook 22 upon the member 12 so as to swing upon the pins 24 inserted into the holes 25 in the parts 22, the rod 21 being connected to this pivot by a link 30. Vhen it is desired to hold the foot board in the position shown on the right hand side of the chair shown in Fig. 1, the rod is swung about the pivot until it is thrown into the path of the hook 19, when the hook engages the same as shown in Fig. 4, holding the member 15 substantially at right angles to the member 12. When it is desired to hold the members in the relation to each other illustrated in Fig. 3, the rod may be swung out of the path of the hook, since the link 30 is long enough for that purpose.

Referring to the parts illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the part 120 is provided with a top part 121 and a bottom part 122 adapted to lit upon a board in a vertical position, the part 121 being fastened along the edge by a bolt or screw inserted through the hole 123, the member 122 extending along side the board. The part 150 is provided with a hook 190 having a slot 191l therein to engage the rod 210 which is connected by a link 130 to a pin 131 which enters a hole 132 in the part 122. The members 120 and 150 are pivoted together at 170 as shown. The end 180 of the member 122 is cut away at 181 to permit the rod 210 to swing therein. When in the position shown in Fig.'5, the parts will bear the relation to each other illustrated upon the left hand side of the chair of Fig. 1 and when in the position shown in. Fig. 6 the parts will bear the relation to each other shown on the right hand side of this figure.

It will be apparent that in either case the foot board may be folded up against the leg rest for the purpose of retiring the apparatus from use. It will also be apparent that other means than a hook and pin may be provided and' that any suitable Vmember lmay be substituted for the swinging rod lemployed. In fact, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that numerous and extensive departures from the form and details of the embodiments here illustrated may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, these forms being shown merely for the purpose of illustrating specific embodiments of the invention.

I claim 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, a leg rest pivoted to said frame, a foot board pivoted to said leg rest, a member carried by said leg rest, a hook carried by the foot board adapted to engage said member to hold the foot board in a substantially straight line with the leg rest and a second member pivoted to the leg rest to swing between the hook and the leg rest, said hook being adapted to engage the second named member to hold the foot board in a position substantially atright angles to the leg rest, said foot board being foldable against said leg rest.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, a leg rest device pivoted to said frame, a foot board device pivoted to said leg rest device, a member carried by one of said devices, hooking means carried by the other of said devices, such means adapted to engage said member to hold the foot board device in a substan-V tially straight line with the leg rest device and a second member pivoted to swing between the hooking means and said member,

said means engaging said second named member to hold the foot board device in a position substantially at right angles to the leg rest device.
