Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 15, 1913.
Patented Jan. 2%,1914. Serial No. 778,118.
1 b (ZZZ 407mm it may concern Be it known that we, Jnssin B. PROUTY and .mios H. Marlin citizens of the United States. and l6SiCli.r 1f Colville, in the county 01 Stevens and 1.1:; of ashington, have invented a new and Improved Currycomb, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a curry comb comprising a blade that may e cheaply produced from sheet metal and having disposed at different edge portions thereof, teeth of different character, as well as a scraping edge, whereby to perform the various operations of scraping, currying and combing, together with a handle so disposed on the blade as to promote convenience in the turning of the device to pre sent a particular edge portion of the blade in the proper position for use.
The invention will be particularly ex plained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings forming a part of this specifi cation, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a. perspective view of a curry comb embodying our invention; and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the blade taken on line of Fig. 1, a portion of the handle being broken off.
In forming a curry comb in accordance with our invention, a blade 10 is produced in sheet metal, in rectangular form, or sub stantially so, and having a handle 11 disposed on the blade preferably about centrally thereof and perpendicularto the plane of the blade. The handle may be secured by producing ears or lugs 12 at its forward end. the lugs being fastened to the blade by rivets 13 or equivalent means.
On opposite side edge portions of the blade currying teeth 14, 15, are produced, the teeth of one edge portion being coarser than on the other. On the third side edge of the blade are produced combing teeth 16, of a. length to be serviceable in combing the inane and tail of an animal. The teeth 16 will be required to be of substantial strength, because having considerable length, the blade is thickened to give the desired rigidity to the teeth and the spaces between the teeth do not extend into the blade to the full extent of the thickened portion, thereby leaving a. thickened portion 16 at the base of the teeth and transverse to the latter. The remaining side edge of the blade which is disposed opposite the comb ing teeth 16 is given the form of a scraping edge 17, which is untoothed.
lVith a curry com'b formed as described the device may be bodily turned quickly and conveniently about the axis of the perpendicular handle, and thereby either of the edge portions of the rectangular blade may be readily presented in the desired position for convenient and effective use. ltloreover, the device may be very cheaply produced, although embodying in a single blade, all the necessary elements for performing the various operations of scraping, cutting, and combing in grooming an animal.
By producing the two different kinds of currying teeth on directly opposite edge portions, convenience in the use of the tool is promoted, because the user will be able to instinctively give the blade a half turn to change from fine teeth to coarse, or vice versa, as he may find desirable in going over the animal, since the user in performing the operation of currying, and requiring the two series of teeth at different times in this single operation, will quickly familiarize himself with the fact that these teeth are directly opposite, and therefore the fact of using one series of teeth will cause the user without any hesitancy to give the blade a half turn, to bring the other series of currying teeth into position. On the other hand, if the two series of currying teeth were disposed on two adjacent sides at angles to each other, the user could not instinctively turn the device in the direction to bring a particular set of currying teeth into posit-ion.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent;
A curry com'b, comprising a blade of sheet metal of approximately rectangular form, and having differently formed edge portions thereon for performing the v operations of scraping, currying and a ing, the blade at the combing edge being i nbthickened, the thickened portion presenting names to this specification in the presence of elengated combing teeth, and a thickened two subscribing witnesses.
