Description
(ltnited some WILLIAM BERRI,- J R, OF BROOKLYN, YORK.
' Letters Patent No. 108,437, dated October 18, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT N THE MANUFACTURE OF OIL-CLOTH.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W1LLIAM Baum, Jr., of
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have made certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Oil-Cloths; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same.
In carrying out my invention, I print or produce the design or pattern on theface 0f the cloth, as usual. Hitherto, it has been euston'iary to form oil-cloths with a pla n back. "When the face becomes disfigured or worn outthe cloth is generally cast aside as useless.
I design to utilize the back by printing, or otherwise ornamenting it wit-l1 a pattern similar to the face, or by a pattern entirely difierent.
When the face is worn off, the cloth is reversed, and then, to all appearanees,.a new oil-cloth is presented. l
The increased cost in double-faced oil-cloth is merely that of the color, and the labor of afiixing it.
What is ordinarily known as backing is produced when the cloth is being prepared for the reception of the facing. N 0 extra preparation is thereby needed to print or otherwise afiix a design to the hack of the cloth, and thus I produce an article which-has a twofold use, and utilize what has been rendered useless when the face is destroyed or worn out.
One side of the cloth may have a face in dark colors for the winter season, and the other side a light face for the summer season.
The cloth is made heavier and more durable by the double face, as well as more elastic than the oil-cloths now in use.
Having thus described my invention- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The process of manufacturing oil-cloths by forming ornamental faces on both sides, substantially as described.
2. As. a new article of manufacture, adoublcaccd oil-cloth.
