UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID L. LANFOBJ),
OF COLEMAN, TEXAS.
CUTTING MECHANISM FOR DISPLAY-RACKS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID L. LANFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coleman, in the county of Coleman and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Cutting Mechanism for Display- Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful cutting mechanism, for cutting various fabrics, such as oilcloth and the like.
It is the aim of the present invention to provide a cutting mechanism, especially adapted for use upon display racks, for example such as that shown, set forth, and claimed in the application filed June 24, 1911, Serial No. 635,238, and allowed Oct. 20, 1911, and which has matured into patent, dated March 12, 1912, Patent No. 1,019,807.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cutting mechanism, in which, eflicient and desirable features of construction are involved, and one adapted for severing the fabric subsequently to the measuring of the amount, desired by a customer. The cutting mechanism consists of a pair of shearing members, U-shaped in elevation, and fixed to the stand of the rack.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings there is disclosed only one form of the present invention but in practical fields this form may require alteration, to which the applicant is entitled, provided the alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a display rack, showing the improved cutting mechanism as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing another side of the display rack, so as to dispose the cutting mechanism in edge view. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1 partly in section.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates the base of the stand of the display rack, while 2 and 3 denote the upper and lower plates of the rack, through which the rods 4 penetrate, for supporting the rolls of fabric 1. The structure of this display Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 22, 1913.
Patented Jan. 13, 1914.
Serial No. 762,815.
- rack forms the subject matter of the foregoing identified application.
A U-shaped member 5 having a cutting edge 6 is provided. The upper arm of the U-shaped member 5 is secured to the vertical post a of the display rack by the lock nuts 7, while the lower arm thereof is clamped between the base and the lock nut 4E. The lower arm of the U-shaped member 5 is further secured to the base by a rivet or bolt 8. Pivoted to the U-shaped member 5 are the arms 9 of a second U-shaped member 10, which is provided with a cutting edge 11. By closing the two U-shaped members, the cutting edges are brought into a shearing cooperation, which will sever the fabric. The upper arm of the second U-shaped member 10 is provided with a pin 12, which extends into an opening of the upper arm of the U-shaped member 5, so as to limit the U-shaped member 10 in its movement. This opening is denoted by the character 1%. A suit-able spring 13 is arranged between the upper arms of the U-shaped members, for holding them slightly apart, so as to permit the fabric to pass between the cutting members 5 and 10. By forcing the cutting edges toward and slightly past one another the fabric may be severed.
The U-shaped members are provided with yieldably mounted rollers 1 1, between which the fabric passes, as it is measured from the roll, by means of the measuring tape 15, which is secured by means of a hook 16 to the upper arms of the U-shaped member 5. When the cutting edges of the U-shaped members are brought together, the rolls yieldably contact, thereby clamping the fab ric. By virtue of the yield clamping action of the rolls 14. with the fabric, as the cutting edges 6 and 11 pass, the shearing and severing action of the cutting edges are greatly assisted. Carried by upper arm of the U- shaped member 10 is a spring 10 which bears against the plate 1 1, pivoted at 14:", and in which one of the pintles of one of the rolls 1 1 is journaled. By means of the spring 10" the plate 14: is held against the pin 9. The roller 14L of the U-shaped member 10 will move from position shown in Fig. 3, when the U-shaped members are brought together, and the spring 10 will be placed under tension, so as to return the plate 141 to its normal position.
The cutting edges of the U-shaped members, and the rolls 14; converge together at their lower ends, so that the cutting edges shear when brought together.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is of a display rack, the member having a cutting edge, a second U-shaped member having a cutting edge yieldably pivoted on the first U-shaped member for cooperating therewith, the first U-shaped member having an opening, and a pin carried by the second member extending through the opening to limit the second U-shaped member in its movement.
3. In combination, a U-shaped member J adapted to be secured to a base and standard of a display rack, the member having a cutting edge, a second U-shaped member having a cutting edge yieldably pivoted on the first U-shaped member for cooperating therewith, the first U-shaped member having a lateral extension, with an elongated opening there in, said opening being curved on the arc of a circle, using the pivot of the second U- shaped member as a center, a pin carried by the second U shaped member extending through the opening to limit the second U- shaped member in its movement, a roll car ried by the first Ushaped member and disposed adjacent to and parallel with the cutting edge therewith, and a yieldably mounted roll carried by the second U-shaped member disposed adjacent to and parallel with its cutting edge, and adapted to yield when contacting with the first roll.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID L. LANFORD.
