To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN S. FOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mexico, in the county of Oxford and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has special reference to the class of drills, and relates to a drill socket which is operated through a pawl and ratchet arrangement.
An object of my invention is to provide a manually operated drill wherein a pawl and ratchet arrangement is used for converting an oscillatory into rotary movement.
Another object of my invention is to provide a drill socket wherein the drill holding means travel within a casing, the casing being rotated through the co-action of a ratchet wheel and pawl, the oscillatory movement of the handle being converted into rotary movement as will be appreciated.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which consists of but a few simple parts whereby it may be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the foregoing character which is capable of receiving both square and round twist drills, and also a device wherein the drill will not buckle or wabb-le under any conditions.
Broadly my invention consists of a casing, having a portion of the interior bore thereof screw threaded for the reception of an exteriorly screw threaded sleeve, the sleeve being provided with a recess for receiving the upper extremity of the drill bit. A ratchet wheel is provided which is keyed to the interior screw threaded sleeve so that when, the handle of the device is oscillated, a pawl carried by the latter will convert the oscillatory movement of the handle into a rotary movement of the ratchet wheel, sleeve and bit, forcing the bit downwardly or drawing the same upwardly such as the occasion may be.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of constrnction and in the arrangement and co1nbination of the several parts as will. be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like Specification of Letters Patent.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the connecting means between the ratchet wheel and the other casing. Fig. 4: is a detail view of the pawl, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the eXteriorly screw threaded sleeve.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 10 designates the body portion thereof which has provided at its lower end a flange 11, this flange serving the purpose that will be hereinafter fully set forth.
A portion of the inner face of the casing is enlarged. as shown at 19 and provided with screw threads, for the reception of the exteriorly screw threaded sleeve 13.
The sleeve 13, when used in connection with a square headed bit, has provided thereon a squared opening, but in the drawings I have illustrated the same used in connection with a round headed bit, the latter being held in frictional engagement with the round opening 14: in the sleeve. It will now be recognized, that the adjustment of the bit withinv the casing 10 is actuated through the rotation of the sleeve 18.
A cut out portion 15, is provided in the sleeve 13 whereby, when the bit is desired to be removed therefrom, a wedge shaped instrument such as is commonly used by mechanics may be forced therein so as to dislodge the bit. While I have illustrated frictional engagement of the bit to the sleeve, it is to be appreciated that other efficient means may be provided if occasion should require.
For the purpose that will be hereinafter fully set forth and described, a tubular member 17 is provided which is enlarged at its upper end as shown at 18, the enlargement having teeth 19 formed thereon as is clearly shown. A key such as shown at 20 is also employed for purpose of locking the member in rigid relation with the sleeve 13, so that when the member is revolved, the sleeve and bit will be moved upwardly within the casing 10 such as the case may require, the key 20 being engaged in a key-way 21, the way being shown to advan tage in Fig. 5.
Here particular attention is called to Fig. 3, wherein is disclosed a sleeve 19', provided with interior screw threads 20 at one end,
and being enlarged at their ends whereby a circular cup shaped member 21 is formed. This cup shaped member is entirely openat its lower end, and an opening 22 provided in the upper portion 23 thereof for purpose that will be hereinafter fully set forth and described.
The casing 10 is received through the opening the flange 11 carried thereby'enthe underside of the top 23. It will now be appreciated that when the cup shaped member is in place as shown in Fig. 1, its lower end projects below the enlarged portion 18 of the member 17, whereby when a disk such shown at A is disposed in place. the teeth will be entirely incased. The disk and cup shaped member securely hold the casing 10 in engagement with the enlargement 18 of the member 17, however, these are held in revoluble relation with each other so that the enlargement 18 may be engaged and revolved by an oscillatory handle hereinafter disclosed.
A pawl 25 having a beveled face 96 is provided. in the sleeve 19, this pawl having a cut out portion provided therein which receives a pin 28 carried by the sleeve. By this arrangement, it will be apparent that the longitudinal movement of the pawl within the casing is guided through the cooperation of the head and the cut out portion.
A stud 29 is provided upon the rear end of the pawl, which projects rearwardly in the sleeve, and has disposed thereabout a coil spring 30, the latter engaging the rear face of the pawl, at the forward face of an evteriorly screw threaded extension 31 can ried upon the handle 32. By this arrangement it is apparent that the pawl is normally held in yielding engagement with the enlargement 18 upon the member 1 7, thus allowing the member 17 to be revolved in onedirection only. It will now be apparent that as the handle is oscillatechrotary movement will-be imparted to the member 17, consequently rotating the sleeve 13 and moving the same upwardly or downwardly in ther in zlthe latter movement being secured by t =rrangement of the pawl 25.
I desire to laythe greatest of stress upon the simplici of my. invention and it is thought that the advantages and novel features of my in'ventionwill .be recognized from the foregoing disclosure.
I desire it to beunderstood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided, however, such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device of the character described including a casing the one end thereof being enlarged and provided with internal screwthreads, the marginal edge thereof being turned at right-angles to the body, an externally screw-threaded sleeve arranged in said casing adapted for screw-threaded engagement with the internal threads thereof, a tubular member the one end thereof being enlarged and engaged with the right-angled portion of said casing and being provided on the outer periphery thereof with teeth, a cup-shaped member engaging over said right-angled end and depending exterior of said teeth, a sleeve extending from said cupshaped member, a pawl mounted in said sleeve for engagement with said teeth, elastic means carried in said sleeve for engaging said pawl with said teeth, and a handle detachably associated with said sleeve for rotating said tubular member for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the character described including an elongated cylindrical casing the one end thereof being enlarged and provided with internal screw-threads, said enlarged end being open and having a portion thereof turned at right angles to thebody, the opposite end of said casing being closed and having an opening transversely extending through said closed end, an elongated externally screw-threaded sleeve engaging in screw-threaded relation with the internal threads of said casing and being adapted for longitudinal movement therein, a tubular member the one end of which is enlarged and engaged with the right-angled portion of said casing and being provided on the outer periphery thereof with teeth, a cup-shaped member engaging over said right-angled end and depending exterior of said teeth, a sleeve extending from said cup-shaped member, a pawl mounted in said sleeve for engagement with saidteeth, said pawl being provided with an elongated shank extending in the bore of said shank, a coil spring the one end of which is encircled-around the shank of said pawl and has engagement therewith for normally engaging said pawl with said teeth, and a handle detachably associated with said sleeve and having engagement with the opposite end of said s1 ring for the purpose set forth.
