Application filed August 12, 1913. Serial No. 784,328. i
in view is -to provide a wrench of cheap and simple construction, consisting of few easily assembled parts, capable of fine adjustment and which may he readily applied to a nut to operate upon the nut. l
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench comprising a station ary jaw the shank of the said stationary jaw, the movable j aw being provided with a pivoted Q0 member which carries a screw that co-acts with the threads of the shank of the movable jaw, and the said screw carrying member being at all times under the tension of a 7' spring to force the said screw into engagement with the teeth of the shank, and to further provide means whereby7 the said 'screw carrying members may be swung. out of engagement with the threads to permit of the quick adjustment of the wrench as well as to lock the said element upon the movable jaw to retain the screw in operative engagement with the threads of the shank.
With the ahoverecited objects in view, and others which will appear as the nature 3.5 of the invention is more fully understood,A
the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following speciicatmn and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
n the drawing: Figure 1 is a View of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, the dotted lines illustrating the position ofthe screw carrying mem ber when the latch has been operated to permit'of the same being swung to bring its screw out of engagement with the threads of the shank of the wrench, Fig. 2 is a cen tral longitudinal sectional view taken through the movable jaw and the members carried by the said movable jaw, Fig. 3ds al perspective view of the screw carrying member, and Fig. 4 is a similar view oit the latch.
In the drawing, the numeral l designates the wrench in its entirety. The wrench includes a stationary jaw 2 which is provided having a movable jaw slidable upon with a reduced angular shank 8, and the said shank has, what may be termed, its upper face provided with transversely arranged teeth 4, and is also provided with a removable handle 5.
The numeral 6 designates the movable jaw. This jaw is formed with a longitudinally extending passage 7 for the reception of the shank.3, the jaw being further provided adjacent its engaging face and above its passage 7 with a depressed portion or pocket 8, and the rear portion of the jaw, to' the rear of its pocketand at the upper portion of said ljaw terminates in an angular wall 9, the said wall being parallel with the engaging face of the jaw, and so dispdsed vertically of the jaw when the wrench is in the position illustrated in the' figures of the? drawing. The wall 9 terminates with the ,longitudinally extending side walls 1() formed by the passage 7, and the said side walls have their ends projected and bridged,
as at 11. The side walls are disposed beow the upper walls of the passage, so that the angular wall 9 partially enters the said passage, and the bridge l1 is slotted in a plane with the inner surfaces of the side walls to provide a continuation of the passage. The end of the jaw provided with the bridge 11 is formed, at the lower wall of said movable jaw, with a transversely arranged notch l2.
The angular wall 9 is centrally formed with a slot 13, and the pocket 8 is adapted to receive a helical pressure spring 14, which is adapted to have one of its ends enter a groove provided upon an annular head 15 which is provided upon one end of an arched member 16, and the said arched member is connected with a tongue 17 provided upon one end of a screw carrying member 18. The tongue 17 is centrally formed upon one 'of the ends of the said member 1S and is secured within. the notchthrough the medium of a pivot. 19 which is arranged transversely of the jaw 6.
The end of the wrench has its walls which are provided upon the opposite sides of the tongue 17 and which may be designated hy the numerals 20, normally contacting with thc angular wall 9 of the jaw G, andthc'said member is provided with a transverse opening within which is mounted for rotation a. worm or scew 21, and the said screw, through thc medium of the spring 14, is normally forced into engagement with the teeth 8Ol i -versely anfang-ed pm 2S Whloh paseos hough BEST AVAILABLE copy The ee is ofuroate at lts outel" end, and one of to The numeral 25 designates the look o1' laoh of the member-18.
