Mmmm-'mmc STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY H. FERRIS, OF HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION-JACK.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HARRY H. FERRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington Beach, in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination- Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to devices adapted for use in the track construction of railways and which may be termed a combination jack. l
ln carrying out my invention, 1t is my purpose to provide a tool or instrument wherein tracks may be properly gaged or brought into proper alinement by a tool constructed in accordance with my invention, and operated by a single hand, and furthermore, to provide a tool of this class wherein the rails may be properly gaged and the tie raised to permit of the rail secur ing spikes being attached thereto wit-hout the employment of a separate device for this purpose.
With the above recited objects in view, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is more fully understood, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in the following description and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure l is a top plan view illustrating my improved jack in position upon. a pair of rails, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of same, the rails being shown in section, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. i is a similar view, parts being broken away, and illustrating the method of raising a tie to permit of the rails being spiked thereon.
My improved jack comprises essentially a body member l which is preferably arched, and which in cross section, is preferably substantially 'lshaped The body 1 has its opposite ends each provided with oppositely curved arms 2 and 3 respectively, the said arms terminating in shouldered fingers l which are arranged in a plane equaling the plane of the longitudinal sides of the body. The shoulders of the fingers 4C are adapted to engage with the inner faces of t-he rails R, while the fingers proper overlie the said rails. The shoulders of the arms 2 and 3 upon the opposite ends of the body are ar- Speecation of Letters Patent.

ranged a distance away from each other equaling the proper spacing distance between the rails R or the said shoulders provide a pro-per gage for the rails R. The body l has its upper edge centrally provided with spaced lugs 5, between which is pivotally connected, as at 6, a lever 7. The lever 7 has one of its ends provided with a pair of links 8 which are pivotally connected to the ends of a pair of tongs 9. The tongs 9 are adapted to have their toothed ends engage with the tie T, which, after the rails R have been properly gaged by the improved jack, may be lifted by a pressure upon the lever 7 to bring the said tie into a position to be spiked to the rails B.
By reference to the figures of the drawing, it will be noted that the arms 2 are arranged nearer the body l than are the arms 3, and the tongs 9 being disposed between the said arms 2, but to the rear of the shoulders and lingers of said arms, will not have a tend ency to tilt the jack when the tongs are employed for elevating a tie.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof` will it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain without further description.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim as new is:
In a combined tie jack, an arched body having its ends provided with oppositely curved arms terminating in shouldered fingers that are arranged in a plane parallel to the longitudinal sides of the body, the arms upon one of the sides of the body terminating at a lesser distance from the body than the arms upon the opposite side of the body, the body being centrally provided with upturned lugs, a lever pivotally secured between the lugs, a pair of links pivotally connected with the lever, and each of said links being pivotally connected with the arms of pivoted tongs beyond the pivots of said tongs.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY H. FERRIS.
