PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 6,1914.
Application filed June 27, 1912. Serial No. 706,264.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. RICHARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenwood, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plows.
One object of the invention is to provide a plow having an improved construction and arrangement of clevis whereby the draft devices may be readily attached thereto and having means whereby said draft devices may be adjusted to regulate the draft of the plow.
A further object is to provide a plow and clevis which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction and to which may be hitched any desired number of draft animals.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a side view of my improved plow and clevis showing the hinge member of the latter in closed position in full lines and in open position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same 5' Fig. 3 is a side view of the front end of the plow beam and clevis showing the hinge member of the latter closed but not fastened; Fig. 4: is a horizontal sectional view on the line H of Fig. 3.
In the illustrative embodiment of the invention 1 represents a plow of conventional design to which the improved clevis is adapted to be readily attached.
As clearly shown in Fig. 3 the clevis 15 is constructed in such a manner that when the same is in a closed position with the lugs 14 thereon located between the heads 9 secured to the outer end of the beam 5, the free looking end 16 of the clevis will be elevated in a yielding position above the upper surface of the beam, whereby the ring or band 17 slidably mounted upon the beam is adapted for interlocking engagement with the free end of the clevis.
In connection with the plow, I provide an improved construction and arrangement of clevis 7 comprising a pair of side plates 8 having their outer ends enlarged to form substantially elliptical shaped heads 9. The plates 8 are provided with bolt holes 10 adapted to receive bolts 11 whereby the plates are secured to the opposite sides of the beam when the clevis is arranged in a vertical position or to the top and bottom of the beam when the clevis is arranged in a horizontal position.
The clevis is provided with a coupling member or lever 12 comprising a bar constructed to conform to the shape of the head 9 and having its lower end pivotally secured between the plates 8 to a pivot bolt 13 whereby said bar is permitted to swing forwardly and downwardly to an open position to receive the attaching ring of the draft deviceof the plow. On the inner side of the bar or lever 12 are a series of inwardly projecting lugs 14, the ends of which pass between the heads 9 and form a series of spaces with which the ring of the draft device may be adjustably engaged and for regulating the draft of the plow.
The upper end of the bar or lever 12 is reduced to form a spring catch 15 having thereon a beveled stop lug 16. When the bar or lever 12 is in closed or operative position the spring latch 15 will be disposed above the top of the outer end of the plow beam and owing to'the resiliency of the catch will tend to spring outwardly from the beam. The end of the bar when thus constructed is fastened to the beam by a ring or band 17 which is slidably mounted on the beam and is adapted to be slipped over the catch 15 which is depressed while the ring is being forced from the lug 16 and which, after the ring has passed the lug will spring outwardly and engage the lug with the ring thereby preventing the latter from becoming casually disengaged from the end of thebar. By thus constructing and arranging the bar or lever 12 it will be seen that when it is desired to attach the draft device to the clevis or to adjust the draft device thereon it is simply necessary to release the catch 15 and swing the bar or lever outwardly from the end or heads of the clevis.
While I have herein shown and described the clevis as being secured to a plow beam in a vertical position to provide a vertically adjustable support and attaching means for the draft device it is obvious that the clevis may be arranged in a horizontal position to permit of ahorizontal adjustment of the draft device and that the clevis may be applied to other implements or machines.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my inventionjwhat I claim is; I
In combination with the forward end of a plow beam, of enlarged elliptical shaped heads forming a partof and attached to the opposite sides of the beam and projecting therefrom, a: olevis conforming to the shape of the heads the lower end of which is hingedly secured between the heads, a plurality of lugs projecting from the inner curved surface of the clevisi and adapted to be located between said heads when the clevis is in a locked position to prevent lateral displacement of the clevis, the free end of the latter being projected over the beam and adapted for'contact therewith, said end terminating in a spring catch having a lug thereon, and a ringslidably moiinted upon the beam and adapted for detachable and interlocking engagementwith said free end of the clevis, whereby the yielding portion of the latter is bi ndi'ngly brought in contact with the beam and the sanie'secu'rely held an operative position.
In testimony whereof Iha vehereun'to set my hand in presence'of two subscribing wit nesss.
JOHN WESSLEY RIGHQKIRD'ISON.
