Description

J. W. POWERS. Plow O1evis.
No. 237,772. Patented Feb. 15, 1-881.
{JL/W I N. PETER PHDTO-IJTHGGRAPNER, wAsmNamN D C UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
JAY W. POWERS, OF POBTAGE, WISOON SIN, ASSIGNOR TO A. OHISHOLM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PLOW-C LEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,772, dated February 15, 1881.
Application filed May 4, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAY W. POWERS, of Portage, in the county of Columbia and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful ImprovementinPlow-Clevises,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification.
The object of my invention is to provide for the attachment of a clevis to antiron or steel plow-beam and the invention consists in constructing a suitable clasp to connect the clevis proper to the beam.
The present construction of an iron or steel beam is such as to renderit difficult to attach a clevis by means of a vertical bolt, as in ordin ary wooden beams, (which is desirable,) the beam being too thin to admit of a hole passing through it in that direction; but by the use of my device a clevis may be so attached.
The invention is illustrated in detail in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top-plan view; Fig. 2, a side elevation Fig. 3, a perspective of the clasp; and Figs. 4 and 5 are views of the forward ends of iron or 5 steel beams.
A clevis adapted to be used in connection with my device is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, in which A represents the clasp; B, the beam; 0, the vertical clevis; D,
the horizontal clevis; E, the locking-bolt, and
F the draft-link. I
The clasp A is provided at its forward end with the vertical hole a, for the locking-bolt E to pass through, at its rear end with the slit b, to admit the forward end of the beam B, and with the horizontal holes 0 and (I, through which bolts are passed in securing it to the beam B, one of which may be oblong, as shown by d, to accommodate it to beams having the 0 holes 0 and f unequal distances apart.
The beam B is provided with horizontal holes 6 and f, which correspond in size and position with the holes oand cl in the clasp A.
The vertical clevis G is susceptible of being swung to the right or to the left, to provide for the side draft of the plow, thereby regulating the width of the furrow, while the horizontal clevis D may be raised or depressed, to provide for the draft of the plow upward or downward to regulate the depth of the furrow.
The vertical clevis O is provided at its rear end with an oblong hole, 71, which admits of its being slid rearward upon the bolt E, for the purpose of disengaging the anterior notches at its forward end from the posterior notches of the horizontal clevis D.
The locking-bolt E serves as a draft-pin, while its head, being oblong to fit the oblong hole h in the clevis (3, serves as a key to prevent the clevis C from sliding back, thus holding the two clevises rigidly together.
When it becomes necessary to adjust the clevises to position, all that is necessary to do is to lift the locking-bolt E until its head is released, when the clevis (J may he slid rearward sufficiently to disengage its anterior notches from the posterior notches of the other, when either one or both may be swung to any position required, when, by dropping the bolt E, the two clevises will be again firmly locked together. The draft-link F clasps both clevises at their point of contact and draws equally upon both.
I do not claim in this aprdication the invention of the clevis specified, knowing that the same is already i1 use.
I am also aware that a clasp somewhat similar to the one here shown has been secured to the front end of the beam and provided with horizontal holes to change the draft from side to side, and this I also disclaim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination, with a thin iron plow-beam provided with the hole 6 and slot], of the clasp A, made to fit over the front end of the beam, and having the hole 0, slot (1, and the vertical hole a. through its front end, the clevises O and D, bolt E, having the key g, and draftlink F, the parts all being arranged and com- 0 bined to operate substantially as shown and described.
JAY W. POWERS.
