mse/g/a/NVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTOMER SCI-IMACI-ITENBERGER, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
ICE CARD OR SIGNAL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTOMER SCHMAGH- TENBERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice Cards or Signals, of which the following is a specification.
M f invention relates to an improvement in ice cards or signals, and the object is to provide means whereby the ice man can be notified without calling at the house, as to the quantity of ice desired, or whether any ice is desired or not.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in front elevation of the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the cards.
A, represents the plate, which is provided with lips 1, in which lips is journaled a shaft 2. Hinged upon the shaft are a plurality of cards or strips 3, each bearing a different number, as for instance, one card would bear 25, the next 50, the next 75, and the next 100, designating the number of pounds desired. Of course, these numbers could be changed to suit the conditions or requirements, and hence I do not care to be limited as to what is designated upon these cards.
The subject-matter placed upon the cards is displayed on only one side of the cards, so that when the cards are swung downward, nothing is disclosed, and they are held in their lowered position by means of a spring clip 4, which is connec'ted to the body or plate A.
Assuming that 25 pounds of ice are desired, the card having 25 thereon is swung upward, where it is engaged by a spring clip 5, for holding the card for displaying the number thereon, so that the deliveryman will know the quantity of ice desired. After Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 654,122.
he Ihas delivered it, he can cause the card to be swung down, so that it will be held in its downward position by the clip 4C, so that there is no possibility of the card or cards being blown upward and engaged by the ppermost clip 5, thereby displaying a num- It is to be noted that all the cards are hinged to a common shaft, and one or all are capable of being held in their lower or uppermost position by a common clip-that is, a clip is provided at the bottom and at the top for holding one or all of the cards in either the lower position or uppermost position, as when the number upon the lowermost card is to be disclosed, all of the cards must be swung upward and engaged by the clip 5, so that the number upon the lowermost card can be exposed to view.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a very simple means for tradesmen in delivering ice, milk and the like, to know the quantity desired, and when none of the cards are displayed, the tradesman will know that nothing is wanted.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a plate, of integral lips struck up from the sides of the plate, a horizontal shaft journaled on the lips, a plurality of non-flexible cards hinged upon the shaft overlapping one another, said cards displaying subject matter on one side thereof which is concealed when the cards are in their lowermost position, and when the cards are swung to their uppermost position the subject matter on the outermost card is all that is displayed, and spring clips connected to the plate for holding` the cards in their uppermost and lowermost positions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signa ture, in the presence of two witnesses.
OTTOMER SCHMACHTENBERGER.

WILLIAM K. WHITFIELD, RALPH E. BOWERS.
