To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NnLs FoNssKov, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Perth Amboy, MiddleseX county, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to pencil sharpeners and its object is to provide a simple device which may be readily carried in the pocket and which is as capable of effectively sharpening pencils as are the more complex and expensive devices hitherto available.
Another object is to provide a single device which may be used efliciently on pencils of different sizes.
I will now describe my invention in the following specification and point out the novel features thereof in appended claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pencil sharpener made according to my invention, with its cover shown in section. This figure also shows in section, the edge of a school desk and illustrates the manner in which my device is held thereon. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1 with its cover broken away to more clearly show the construction. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of inner or stationary member of the apparatus with its annular guide band shown in section. A sectional side elevation of this inner member is shown in Fig. 4, the section in this figure being taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3. A sectional side elevation of the outer or rotary member is shown in Fig. 5. This section is taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view of the device, showing a section taken through the line 66 of Fig. 2.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
The device comprises primarily two circular members, the inner one of which designated by 10 is stationary and the outer one 30 relatively rotatable. These two parts are permanently connected by a hollow sleeve 11 which is aflixed to the inner member by a screw 12 and is provided with a flange 13 which prevents the removal of the outer member. The rear surface of the inner member may be provided with a short strip 14:, the opposite parallel edges of which are bent over to engage the edges of a clamp 15 which may be permanently aflixed to the edge of a desk 15*. By this arrangement the device may be held upon a desk by merely sliding the strip 14; over the clamp 15 and may be as readily detached. The inner or stationary member is provided with a conical pocket 16 at one side of its axis and preferably at right angles to the holding strip 14. Over the face of this member is a flat sheet metal plate 17. This plate is made with a conical slot 18 opposite the opening 16. The lower end of this slot is enlarged as at 19.
20 is an eccentric cam pivoted at 21 to the member 10 and formed with a lever 22 which projects beyond the edge of member 10, by means of which the position of the cam may be adjusted.
An annular band 23 surrounds the memberlO. This band is constructed with a plurality of circular openings such as 24 of different sizes which may be brought successively into alinement with the conical opening 16. The band 23 is also provided with a plurality of holes 25 with which a spring catch 26 engages to hold the band in any of its operative positions. A thumb piece 27 is provided for releasing this catch.
The outer or rotary member 30 is cut away on opposite sides of its center as at' 31 and one side of each of the openings thus formed is beveled as shown to support a cutter 32. Both of these cutters or knives are preferably sharpened at opposite edges so as to be reversible.
33 is a band which surrounds the periphery of the member 30, and 34-34c are extensions from this band which are bent over to form clamps for the knives 32. These are forced against the edges of the knives by screws 35 to hold them in position.
36 is a crank hinged to the edge of member 30 at 37, and 38 its handle. This handle is so arranged that it may be folded over into the sleeve 11.
A removable cover 39 is arranged to fit over the rotary member 30.
When not in use this device is compact and small enough to be carried about in ones pocket. When it is to be used, it may be first secured to a desk or other stationary object and the cover removed so that the crank may be swung out into the position in which it is shown in the drawings. Then the cover is replaced to catch the cuttings.
By releasing the catch 26 the band 23 may be rotated until a hole of proper size for the pencil to be sharpened, is brought into alinement with the opening 16. The pencil is then thrust through the hole 24 into the opening 16. The width of the slot 18 limits the amount of the pencil which may project into the path of the cutters. By means of the crank handle the outer member may be rotated with one hand while the pencil is slowly rotated by the operators other hand. Four of the positions which the cutters assume while acting upon the pencil are indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 at A, B, C and D. The inclination of the cutter blades is about the same as that of the blade of a smoothing plane. They are offset somewhat from diametrical alinement with each other as may be seen from Fig. 2, and from the dotted lines in Fig. 3 it is evident that the beginning and the end of each cut is in a partially transverse direction. If a lighter cut is desired, the cam 20 is adjusted to permit but a smaller amount of the pencil to project into the path of the cutters. With pencils of smaller or larger diameters, other holes of the band 23 are used. These in every case guide the pencil and hold it in the required position.
The cuttings fall into the inside of the cover 39' from which they may be removed at will.
The cutters may be used indefinitely for they may be easily removed and sharpened. Because they are sharpened on opposite edges, they may be reversed at will so that they need not be sharpened often.
This device is peculiarly adapted for use in school-rooms, in which case each desk may be provided with a clamp 15 and one or more of the pencil sharpeners provided for each room.
tVhat I claim is:
1. A portable pencil sharpener comprising a circular pencil supporting member adapted to be atfixed to a stationary object and constructed to form a conical pocket at one side of its axis for receiving a pencil, a circular plate covering the face of said member having an opening therein over the pocket through which the portion of the pencil to be cut may project, means for adjusting the width of said opening; and a rotatable member pivotally connected with,
said pencil supporting member, and two oppositely inclined flat cutter blades detachably secured to the rotatable member.
2. A portable pencil sharpener. comprising a circular pencil supporting member adapted to be afiixed to a stationary object and constructed to form a conical pocket at one side of its axis for receiving a pencil, a

A portable pencil sharpener comprising a circular pencil supporting member adapted to be affixed to a stationary object and constructed to form a conical pocket at one side of its axis for receiving a pencil, a plate over the face of said member having an opening therein over the pocket through which the portion of the pencil to be cut may project, an eccentric cam for adjusting the width of said opening; and a r0- tatable member, a hollow sleeve pivotally connecting said rotatable member with the pencil supporting member, said rotatable member having cutter supporting surfaces at opposite sides of said sleeve oppositely inclined to the plane of rotation, a doubleedged cutter on each of said surfaces, a crank the edge of the rotatable member, said handle being arranged to be folded into said sleeve, and a cover removably connected with the rotatable member. 5. In a pencil sharpener, a pencil supporting member constructed to form a pocket for receiving a pencil, and a guide movable relatively thereto constructed with a plurality of openings of different sizes, and a cutter rotatable relatively to the pencil supporting member.

In a pencil sharpener, a circular pencil supporting member constructed to form a conical pocket for receiving a pencil, a guide band surrounding the periphery of said pencil supporting member and movable relatively thereto, said band being constructed with a plurality of openings of different sizes adapted to be brought into alinement band in different positions, a circular rotatable member pivotally connected with the pencil supporting member, and two oppolsjitely inclined cutters in the rotatable mem- 7.
