To all whom it may concern:

Beit. known that I, J'nnmumn OMEARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of .New York and State of New York have invented a certain new and useful fmprovement in Pencil- Sharpeners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The'object of this invention is to provide a handy device for use in sharpening pencils, which is simple in construction, and may be economically made and sold.

The invention consists of a cutting blade, a holder therefor, and a shield applied to the holder in such way that one may be moved u on the other to cover the cutting edge of t e blade and so protect it and conceal it when the device is not in use, and to uncover it when itis desired to use the blade to sharpen a pencil.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Fig. 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the shield detached. Fig. 3 1s a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the knife and its holder, detached. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modified form of sharpener. Fig. 6 is a plan view looking at the side opposite to that up ermost in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a plan view 0 the blade and its holder of the modified form. Fig.

As shown throughout the drawings, the blade 1 may be a fiat rectangular piece of metal sharpened on one edge, or on parallel edges. As shown in Figs. 1 to 4, 2 is the metal holder, formed of a thin fiat sheet of metal and having one end 3 of reduced width, with portions of its sides turned over to form pockets 4, and these pockets are closed in at 5 to form stops for positioning the blade with relation to the edge of the holder when said blade is inserted flatwise' and frictionally held in said pockets, and to hold the blade in place es ecially when in use. ' vided with stops to retain the blade in shield in relative movement; and this movement of the parts one upon the other may be further limited by means of a rivet or other fastening device 8, inserted inslots 9 and 10, respectlvely, in the blade holder and The rivet may be secured to one of the parts and play in a slot in the other. The forward end of the shield is reduced to substantially the greatest width of that portion of the blade holder in which the blade is secured, and ma be ofi'set as shown in F1 3, to accommo ate the blade and blade er. As shown in full lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the shield is moved into position of non-use while in Fig. 1 the dotted lines show the shield moved so as to uncover the blade for use.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 5

to 8, the blade holder 11 has the pockets 12 to frictionally receive the blade 1, and it also has the clips 13 to receive the shield; and in addition, there may be a rear extension 14 having clips 15 to receive and secure a wip- 1ng device 16, of textile fabric or other material. This blade holder may also. have additional blade positioning stops 17 in the form of rivets. The shield 18 has the clips 19 which overlap the blade holder next to the blade so that the blade holder and shield are held by a duplex arrangement of clips. In addition, the blade holder and shield may be secured by a rivet 20 passed through slots 21 in one or both of them.

By grasping the blade holder and shield between the fingers and thumb and moving the fingers and thumb in opposite directions, the blade holder and shield may be similarly moved to cover or uncover the cutting edge of the blade as desired.

The blades in the two forms of the invention shown may be taken out and replaced at pleasure; and if arallel edges of the blade are-sharpened, the blade may be easily reversed so as to present a fresh ed e.

While I have shown two modifications of the construction of my pencil sharpener, it is obvious that other changes may be made within the scope of the invention.
