' Specification of ietters Paten'tli Application led October 23Q1913. 'Serial No. 796,844..
ramadan.. Yi, raie.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ALr HELMER, 'a 'subject 'of the King of Norway, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and AState of New,
York, have inventeda new and Improved Knife and Scissors Sharpener, of which the tion.
This invention relates to improvements in sharpening devices, and particularly to an improved. construction whichJ may be used for sharpening knives and scissors.
The object in view 1s to provide `a device *designed to be adjusted so that either a knife or-pairV of scissors may be sharpenedby an unskilled person.
Another object of the invention .isk to pro:
vide a pair of abrading rollers and means for locking the ysame in a 'adjusted position, together.witl1,1neans for guiding the blades of a pair ofy 'scissors'I against one' of the In carrying out theobject 'of thei-nvention a frame is provided in which apivotally mounted stationary roller is arranged. These rollers are made of abrading material of any desired kind, as for instance stone, carborundum, steel, 'or other desired mate# rial. A notch is provided in the frame for accommodating a knife, whereby the same may be' drawn across the rollers, that is,
drawn .across both rollers simultaneously, the opposite sides of the knife engaging. op'- posite rollers. 'Arranged adjacent one of the rollers is a guiding member forthe blades of a pairof scissors, said guiding member being associated with an'adjustable brace, whereby the guiding members may be adjusted soas to give any desired angle to the scissors. v
.In the accompanying drawing-Figure 1 is a top plan view of a sharpeningdevice embodying the invention, part of the same ,being broken away for better illustrating the adjustable features yof one of the rollers;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the `,structure shown in Fig.'1; Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 1 on line3-3; Fig. 4 is a detailed fragmentary bottom plan view showing how one side of the frame is mortised in place.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numeral l indicates a base provided with sides 2 and 3. Preferably, side 3 is made following is afull, clear, and exct descrip-A lof the device tised into the side '3, which vs'ide'isheld in. placefby suitableretainin screwsf. By making side 3 removablet e various parts of the Sharpener may be removed Vand againappl-ied. without any considerable trouble.
' Arranged above-base or bottom 1, and
removable', as shown in-Figsf'2 and 4. Boa .tom l is previded with an :extension 41u01- supported by sides 2 andi-3 are' labrading rollers 6 and 7 which inaybeformed of any desired material, as for instance a granular matter or a roughened steel. The rollers are preferably provided with graduations 8 and 9, respectively, which' co-act with the indicating marks wand-'11, whereby therollers may be gradually rotated and present :new surfaces to the lmife 12. In order to preventthe rollers from rotating when'the device is in use locking screws or set screws 13 and. 14 are provided which pressi-against the respective rollers and lock the same .against rotation. In order that a short edge or .a longer edge maybe provided vfor knife 12 roller is arranged adjustablegagnd the lpintles 15 are mounted in apertures 16 in the sides 2 and 3. Adjusting screws 17 and 18 are provided for limiting the movement lof roller 7 'from roller 6. The. operating handles ofthe screws 17 and 18 are arranged in suitable notches 19 in the sides 2 and 3, whereby they do not project beyond the end thereof.
Arranged on the end-of the device oppo-4 lsite 'the screws 17 and 1 8` is a guiding de'- vice 20 for properly 'holding scissors or shears in plac'e. when "sharpening the same.
A guiding plate 2 1 is pivotally mounted in the sides 2 and 3, and is held at any desired angle by .a bracing member 22 formed so that the lower end may engage notches 23 in the base or bottom 1.
In operation one blade of the shears.- 24 is positionedas shown in Fig. 3 and drawn- `back and forth across theroller 6. If it should be desired to give a greater or less angle to the bevel4 ofthe blade member 22 but slightly from .thesides' l standing members and (3o-acting with the .the knife ground away roller 7. is gradually adjusted or moved toward rollerG so as to bring the edge vto a proper nish.
j fixed abrading roller in any desired position,
an adjustable abrading roller arranged to co-act with the first .mentioned abrading roller, said 'up-standing members being frmed with slots for accommodating vthe supporting shaftrof saidA adjustable abrad` ing roller, a pair of s et screws for said shaft for. movingsaid adjustable abradingroller toward the first mentioned abradingfroller,
' and means forlocking said adjustable abrading roller against rotation. 2. In a device ofthe character'described, a housing formed `With' upstanding side 5 membershaving alined notches, an abrading roller arranged on eachvside of said `notches journaled inv said upstanding members,
graduations arranged on each of said rollers,. an index mark arrangedon one o f said upgraduations on said abrading rollers, clamping membersfor preyenting'the rotation of said rollers andmeansxforvadjusting one'of said rollers't'oward andfrom the other roller .Without interfering with theaction of. said graduations and said index mark. l
3. In ajdevice of the character described, a base, a pair of 11p-standing-membersfcon- 'nected to said base,.an abrading rollerv journaled in saidlup-standing members7 a pivotally mounted guide arranged adjacent said abradingmemb'er for holding a tool to be sharpened, a pivotally mounted arm connect- -ed to the outer endof said pivotally mountv ed guide, and a plurality ofstops engaging-gy' the end of said arm opposite that connected withl said guiding member, whereby said guiding memberv may be Aadjusted to diiferent' angles.
In testimony name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing' witnesses.
