ROGER n-NAY, or MnsxoeEE, OKLAHOMA.
To all 'whom t may concern.: w
lBe, it known vthat I, ROGER L.NY, a citizenof the United States, residing at Muskogee, inthe county of Muskogeeand 'State of Oklahoma., havel invented new and usefull Improvements'. in Bookbinders, of
Vwhich the following is a specification.
1 This invention rela-tes to improvements "in temporary binders and movable covers for books, especially bindersy and covers for receipt, order check books, etc.,-which,en
able the stubs of checks or other formsto be removed and filed away for futureuse',
` hereinafter describedand claimed.
2.5, 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a check 'after thefchecks or'leaves in the b ookhave been used, one object of the invention-.being Y to provideimvp'roved means fof detachably securing the ybinder to the cover, another object being to provide improvedmeans for i securing thestubs in the binder; With the above and other obJects m vlew,
t-he invention .consist-s' in the .construetion, combination and, arrangement of devices In the accompanying drawing z-Figure book constructed in accorda-nce with my invention, showing the same open. Fig. 2 is a.
transverse sectional view of the sameon the plane indicated byk the line a-'a of F1g. 1. Fig. A3 isa perspective view, showing the stubs and binder detached from the cover.-
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View, partly through the cover and partly .through the binder, leaves or stubs, ,and a pair of the tubular binding members showing the binder with its leaves or stubsin the act of being detached from the cover. Figs. 5, 6
and 8 are perspective .views of various forms of books 'provided-with my improved binders. Fig. 7 is a yperspective view of the form 'of book shown in Fig. 1, provided with one of my improved bindersV and ,removed from the cover.
The cover of a check book 0r otherbook is indicated at 1, the iexibl'e back being indicated at 2. In accordance with my invention, I provide a pair of suitable number of clasps 3 eachof whichd comprises a base 4, and a', stem 5 which projects vcentrally from the base Vand has a rounded spring or solid yclasp'h'ead 6. These clasps are ar-I point near theilexible back, the bases 3 of the clasps being embedded inthe coverso that the stems with their heads project inwardly from t-he cover.F The leaves 7 which* Bo'oKBINDER.
may be checks or the leaves 4of any other book are gathered and their stub ends are placed 1n a blnder 8. This binder is preferably vmade of leather but may be made of any 'other suitable material and comprises Ta back 9 together with a pair of spaced sides 10, the said sides being on opposite sides of the mass or body of checks or leaves of the book7 the'l checks or leaves and also the sldes4 of the binder being provided uwith reg1ster1ng openings 11.l .Through each of these' openings 11, eXten'ds'f-a pair of tubular bindingv members 12-13, the former being of slightly less diameter than the latter and being telescopically disposed therein. These tubular binding members are, respectively, providedwith heads 14-15' at their outer ends, which heads bear on the outer vsides of the sides 10 of the binder 8. The pairs vof -tubular binding members are arranged coincident with the clasps 3 when the binder w1th..1ts chec or leaves is properly placed in the cover of the book and each of the largertubular binding members 13 is provided at it-sM outer end with a socketorla-nge 16 for the reception of the spring or solld head (icil one of the-clasps 3 so that the binder with its leaves-or checks is securely but yet detachably held in place in the cover by the coaction of the pairs of binding members 12-13 and the clasps 3. The inner members 12 of the pairs of tubular binding members are split longitudinally for a port-ion of their length' as indicated in Figs. 2` Aand 4 of the drawings. This enables-the said inner members to contract diametrically andgives them 4spring action which facilitates the insertion of the inner members in the outer members and also increases Ithe friction between jthem. After placingthebindingv members 12-13 .through the openings in the sheets and binders, but a slight pressure` or rap will cause them\ to hold by friction, completing the binding process, aY slight pressure also fas- `tens the bound sheets to the movable cover at the clasp heads 4. When desired, the bound sheets "are Vdetached from the mov- -able cover l by pulling 4and are ready to file away. When all the checks lor leaves have been used, theirstubs which are preserved in the binder 9,`may, together with the? said binder lbe detached. from'the cover a-ndled away-for future reference .and a' new binder with a new supply of checks or leaves then placed andn fastened in the Patented Dec. 30, 1913. Application led February?, 1913. Serial No. 746,965.
cover by merely engaging the heads of the clasps 3 with the socket or flange of the tubular binding members 13. The said clasps 3 are permanently secured to the cover. I
In Fig. 5 the binder is shown as a comparatively narrow strip 19, which makes a back and has flaps 20, 21 to catch the binding tubes on top and bottom of the' sheets.
In Fig. 6, narrow strips 22 are shown on the top and bottom of the sheets to catch the binding tubes.
In Fig. 7 .I show the form of book shown in Fig. l, with its leaves and stubs intact and provided with'a binder comprising a piece of flexible material forming a back 23, a flap 24 on the top of the sheets or leaves to catch the end of the binder tubes and a cover 25 to catch the lower ends of the binder tubes, the cap beingbroad enough to cover the top and bottom of the stubs, this binder corresponding with that shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 8, the binder 26 is shown as provided with a fleXibleeXtension 27 on the lower side, adapted to be folded back, over the top -of the stubs, to keep out dust.
My improved binder may also be used on books of other forms.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and Within the scope of the appended claims.
In practice, banks and merchants will be furnished with sheets or checks having openwww.
ings to register with those of the binder. When the sheets or checks are secured in the binder by the binding tubes, they form a permanently bound book to beiplaced and secured in covers.l After the sheets or checks have been used, the stubs remain in the binder, and form a book of stubs which may be readily removed from 'the covers and filed away.
I claim 1. In combination with a cover, a base secured to the cover and having a clasp stem, a binder, leaves arranged with one end or edge in the binder, said leaves and binder members telescopically' arranged and provided at their outer ends with heads one of said binding members also'having a socket or iange in its outer end for engagement for said clasp stem for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
