Be it known that I, WILLIA M. GLOT- FELTY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ohiopyle, in the county of Fayetteand State of Pennsylvania, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Rough Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to rough boxes, that is, to receptacles used for holding baskets and cofilns, and used more particularly for the purpose of shipping thelatter, whether the coffins be empty or contain human remains, at burial.

Reference is made to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this, specification, and in which like letters indicate like parts.

I provide two side panels 4, 4, and two end panels 5, 5 Secured to the side panels 4, 4 adjacent the lower edges thereof are side strips 6. End strips 7 are secured upon the end panels 5 adjacent the bottom edges thereof. Secured to the end panels 5, 5 and abutted by the adjacent ends of the strips 6, 7, are corner posts 8 sufficiently high to extend above the top edges of the end panels 5 and side panels 4, these posts being provided at their tops with bevel surfaces 9, these surfaces each beginning at the top of the adjacent end panel and extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom.

Located within the rectangular inclosure formed by the side and end panels are four supporting posts10, 11 considerably shorter than the corner posts 8. The supporting posts 10, 11, are secured to the adjacent surfaces of the side and end panels.

The end panel 5 is provided with a bevel surface 12 extending entirely across from one side panel 4 to the other, the end panel 5 however, is provided with two bevel surfaces 13, separated by a portion of the end panel 5 this portion being provided with a facet 14, as will be understood from Fig. 2.

A packing 15 which may be of rubber,

felt, or other appropriate material in the form of ribbon is mounted upon the upper edges of the side panel 4, and is integral with portions 16 of the same material extending along the upper edges of the end panels 5, 5 The bottom panel 17 is connected with the adjacent lower edges of the side and end panels. A top or cover is shown at 18 and is provided with end strips 19 and side strips 20, these side strips and end strips being placed together in the form of a hollow rectangle. The end strips 19 and side strips 20 'arebeveled to fit the adjacent beveled surfaces 12, 13. The top 18 is further provided with longitudinal strips 21 mounted upon its upper surface and serving, like the strips 19, 20, to strengthen it. The

top 18 is further provided with handles 22 placed upon the body portion of the box. The top is also provided with holes 28 and extending through the same are thumb screws 24 which fit into holes with which the side panels 4 are provided. These holes are so arranged relatively to the holes 23 that when the top is placed on the body portion the screws 24 will fit neatly in place so as to hold the top in precise registry with the body portion.

WVhen the top 18 is placed upon the body portion of the box, as indicated in Fig. 1, the various bevel surfaces 9, 12, and 1?), guide the adjacent beveled surfaces of the top so that the end strips 19 are brought downwardly and rest upon the upper end of the supporting posts 10, 11. Moreover, in doing this the packing members 15, 16, are engaged by the adjacent surfaces of the top 18, these surfaces being flat for the purpose. The rough box thus constructed has at least double the strength that an ordinary or unbraced box otherwise similar in character would have, and because of the neat fitting of the various parts together, the packing device is rendered air tight or practically so.

The lid is self adjusting in the sense that when fitted approximately into position it will move into exact registry, thus making a perfect fit. The screw holes are thus brought into precise registry, so as to facilitate the application of the screws. Moreover, the various bevel surfaces of the body portion promote ease of handling the casket in that the casket as lifted into and out of the body whereby it may readily be lifted off and portion of the receptacle, is guided to some extent by the bevels.

I do not limit myself to the precise con struction set forth, the scope of my invention being commensurate with my claims.

By constructing the device of light dressed lumber, say of one inch thickness, no material increase of weight will be brought about as against an ordinary plain box. The structure may be manufactured cheaply and is of neat and attractive appearance as well as exceedingly strong.

I claim 1. A rough box comprising side and end panels and a bottom panel, corner posts secured to the end panels and abutting the adjacent ends of the side panels, said corner posts each having a portion extending above the top of the adjacent end panel and provided with a bevel surface, said bevel surface beginning at the top of said end panel and extending obliquely upward and outward therefrom, and a cover provided upon its underface with side and end strips forming a rectangle, said side strips being located adjacent the sides of the cover and reaching nearly to the ends thereof, said side strips being provided with beveled surfaces mating said beveled surfaces of said corner posts. a

A rough box comprising side and end panels and a bottom panel, side strips connected with said side panels and extending longitudinally thereof, end strips connected with said end panels, corner posts connected with said end panels and abutted by said end strips, said corner posts extending above said side panels and said end panels, supporting posts located within the corners thus formed by the junction of said side panels and said end panels, said end panels adjacent to said supporting posts being provided with beveled surfaces, and a top for fitting upon said side panels and said end panels, said top being provided with side strips and end strips, the end strips of said top being fitted to rest upon said supporting posts and being provided with bevel surfaces for engaging the adjacent bevel surfaces of said end panels, said top being further provided with surfaces for engaging the adjacent surfaces of said corner posts.
