JOSEPH MONELLY, 0F COLLINGSWOOID, NEW JERSEY, ASSIQNOR '10 UNION SPECIAL MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
FOLDING AND GUIDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn MGNELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Collingswood, in the county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldin and GJidingfievices, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in folding devices for sewing machines, and particularly to a folding an guiding device for use in connection with the Union Special yoke rutlling machine, such as illustrated in of the lines of stitching will be concealed from view, covered by the bottom layer of the yoke. 7
In the usual construction of folding devices for use in connection with machines for securing the layers of the yoke to the body portion, no means have been provided for folding the edge of the body portion of the fabrit', and, therefore, under strain, the raw edges thereof will pullout. By the present arrangement, however, this is prevented.
The invention, therefore, consists in the various matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a folder constructed in accordance with my invein tion;' Fig. 2 is a cross section; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the relation of the layers of fabric as they leave the folding and guiding devices.
The machine upon which this folder isintended to be used, is similar to that illustrated in the patent above referred to; it is intended to use two lines of stitching for uniting the fabrics, as shown in Fig. 3, but it will be understood that it may be applied to a single needle machine, as well.
As shown in these drawings, A represents the basev piece of the folding device adapted to be secured to the bed plate of the sewing machine in the usual way. It has secured to it a piece B, having a horizontally proecting portion G, extending over the base piece, and forming a recess a to receive and guide the under layer I of the yoke. Proecting upwardly from the top face of this piece B is a scroll D, which serves to fold and guide the edge of the body 2, of the fabric, the edge of which is to be ruiiled, and folded and secured tothe upper and lower layers of the yoke. It will be noted that the recess a extends to the right of the scroll D as viewed in Fig. 2. The purpose of extending this recess a beyond the body of the scroll is to guide the edge of the unfolded fabric, so that the same will extend wellheyond the line of the seam and be properly secured by said seam. I
Adjustably secured upon the right hand upper face of thepiece B, by means of a cooperating feather and guide way 4, 5, and adjustingscrews 6, is an angular plate E formed with a fabric rest and guide F, and pressing tongue 7, and having secured to it a scroll G, to fold and guide the edge of the uppe'r layer 3, of the yoke. By adjusting this angular plate, the position of the fold in the upper layer, with respect to that in the lower one, may be varied.
As indicated, the lower layer of the yoke is inserted in. the recess a, the body fabric in the folding and guiding scrqll D, and the upper layer of the yoke, 1n the folding and guiding scroll G. The goods are then ruflied and stitched, by the two rows of stitching, and the lower layer 1, folded back on the lines of stitching as a hinge, making the fabric complete.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A folding and guiding device for sewing machines having a guiding recess for a lower layer of fabric, a folding member above the same for the body fabric, said folding member comprising an upper, latorally and downwardly extending portionadapted to fold an edge upon the body fabric, a second oppositely placed folding and guiding member having a guiding scroll for guiding and folding the edge of an upper layer of fabric, a rest plate carried by and projecting laterally from said guiding scroll for supporting the fabric being folded by said scroll and a pressing tongue for engaging and holding the fabrics as they leave the folder;
'2. A folding and guiding device for sewing machines having a guiding recess for a lower layer of fabric, a folding member above the same for the body fabric, said folding member comprising an upper, laterally and downwardly extending portion adapted to fold an edge upon the body fabric, asecond oppositely placed folding and guiding member having a guiding scroll for guiding-and folding the edge of an upper layer of fabric, a rest plate carried by and projecting laterally from said guiding scroll for supporting the fabric being folded by said scroll, and means whereby said second folding and guiding member may be adjusted with respect to said first folding 0 member.
3. 'A folding and guiding device for sewing machlnes, having a guiding recess for a lower layer of fabric, a folding scroll for the body fabric located'above said re- 5 cess and facing in the same direction, said folding scroll comprising an upwardly, laterally and downwardly extending portion adapted to fold the edge of the body fabric, ,said guiding recess extending laterally to a point beyond said guiding scroll and a second oppositely placed folding.-and guiding member having means'for guiding and folding the edge of an upper layer of fabric.
4. A folding and guiding device for sew- 3 ing machines, having a guiding recessfor the lower layer of fabric, a folding member above the same for the body fabric, said folding member comprising an upwardly, laterally and downwardly extending portion adapted to fold an edge upon the body fabric, and a second oppositely placed fold ing and guiding member having aguide scroll for guiding and folding the edge of an upper.1ayer of fabric, and a pressing tongue for engaging and holding the fabrics as they leave the folders.
5. A folding and guiding device for sewing machines, comprising a base piece, a piece secured thereto, and having a horizontally projecting portion parallel with the base piece and forming a recess a between zontally projecting portion parallel with the,
base piece and forming a recess a between the two, a scroll D, secured. to said piece, and an angular plate also secured to said piece and carrying a scroll oppositely placed from the scroll D, said angular .plate being adjustable on said piece; substantially as described. I h
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH MoNELLY.
