Patented Dec. 23, 1913. v
ALBERT GUNKLE, DECEASED, LATE OF LA FAYETTE, INDIANA, BY MILLIE B. GUNKLE, ADIEINISTBATRIX, OF LA FAYETTE, INDIANA.
BOILER-ELITE.
To all 10, cm it may concern:
Be it known that ALBERT GUNKLE, de-
ceased, late a. eitiaenof the United States. residing at La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in BOllGl-Fll16S, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
I This invention relates to new and useful improvements in boiler fines and more particularly to novel means for securing the ends thereof to the flue sheet, the objectof the invention being to provide fines of the above character which can be readily placed in position and so arranged that the ends thereof will be securely held in place.
Another object of the invention is to provide a de i e of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efib ciency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end view of a flue sheet showing the ends of the flues in position; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken through one of the fines. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating a modilied form of securing means.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the flue sheet and 2 the flue which may be of the ordinary construction, or any other suitable construction desired. The line sheet 1 is provided with a suitable opening 3 adapted for the reception of the end of the flue and is further provided with an annular recess l encircling said opening. The recess 4 is provided with a vertical wall 5 and an inclined wall 6 which tapers outwardly from the inner end of the recess at to the outer end of the opening 3.
In securing the end of the flue 2 in position, it is first provided with a plurality of slits and, then bent outwardly and clownwardly into the recess a, the annular outer end of the tube conforming to the shape of the interior of the recess and engaging the Specification of Letters Patent.

inclined wall 6. From this it will be seen that in case the flue sheet 1 expands outwardly, the end of the flue will tightly engage within the recess l and limit the expansion of the flue sheet.
In Fig. 3, l have illustrated a slightly modified form of securing means wherein I provide a ring 8 which is adapted to be inserted within the recess 4 after the end of the flue has been placed therein. The inner face of the ring 8 is provided with an inclined wall 9 which will conform to the position of the end of the flue, and terminoting the inner edge of the ring into a suitable point 10 whereby the ring may be readily driven into the recess a after the end of the flue has been placed in position. lt will be understood that the friction between the ring and the wall of the recess and the end of the flue will be sullicient to securely hold the ring in position which in turn will prevent the removal of the end of the flue from the recess. In this manner, the outwardly bent end of the flue will be securely held in place within the recess.
From the above description taken in con nection with the accomapnying drawings, it will be readily apparent that l have provided simple and durable means for securely fastening the ends of fiues to the flue sheet. It will also be apparent that the flue is so fastened that it may be readily removed, if desired, and it will also be apparent that the device is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is 1- The combination with a fine sheet having an opening and further provided with an annular recess encircling said opening, said recess having a vertical outer wall and an inclined wall which tapers outwardly from the inner ends of the recess to the outer end of said opening, of a fine having its end provided with a plurality of slits and bent outwardly and downwardly into said recess,
the end of the flue conforming to the-inclination 0f the inner wall, and a ring provided with a sharpened inner edge and disposed within the recess between the end of the flue and the outer wall to frictionally engage the same and securely hold the end of the flue in place. i
In testimony whereof, I hereunto my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
I MILLIE B. GUNKLE, Administratriza of the estate 0; Albem Gimme, deceased. Witnesses:
