To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER E. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Flue-Stops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. v
This invention relates to an improved adjustable flue stop, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which may be readily adjusted and fitted into a flue in a chimney wall to securely close the same and obviate liability of dangerous conflagrations by sparks issuing therefrom into the room or compartment.
The invention has for another and more specific object to provide an adjustable flue stop including a sheet metal body of general circular form, longitudinally split, and provided with means whereby the edges of said body may be drawn together and connected, said body being provided on one end with means to receive backing plates of various diameters, and a cover or cap for the opposite end of said body.
It is a further general object of my invention to provide an adjustable flue stop of the above type, which will permit a large number of the articles to be nested, and thereby reduce to a minimum, the space occupied by the same in transportation or on the shelves of the retailer, said device being entirely constructed of sheet metal which may be readily stamped out into the proper form at nominal expense.
With the above and other objects in View, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the ac companying drawing, in which,

Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the body of my improved flue stop which is preferably constructed of sheet iron and is stamped out of a single piece of material by means of suitable dies to form a Specification of Letters Patent.

single annular groove or corrugation therein, whereby an inwardly projecting rib 6 is produced adjacent to one end of said body. Contiguous to the opposite end of said plate, a second inwardly projecting rib or bead 7 is formed in a like manner thereon, and the extreme end edge of the plate is turned upon itself to provide the inwardly projecting flange 8 and an interior annular groove 9 between said flange and the rib or bead 7. In one end of the sheet metal body plate, spaced pairs of slots 10 are provided, and upon the other extremity of said body plate, the bendabletongues 11 are formed. The body plate 5 is adapted to be bent into circular form, as shown, and the tongues 11 inserted through the corresponding slots 10. When these tongues are disposed through the slots nearest adjacent to the end of the metal sheet, the cylindrical body of the'fiue stop will be of maximum diameter. The tongues are adapted to be bent against the inner face of the sheet metal body after the ends have thus been connected. The diameter of this body may be constricted or reduced by turning the same into smaller circular form and inserting the tongues 11 through the inner pair of slots 1O.
12 designates the back plate for the flue stop. The edge or periphery of this plate is adapted to be engaged in the annular groove 9 and against the inner face of the flange 8, as
clearly shown in Fig. 2, so that when the ends of the body sheet are connected together in the manner above explained, said back plate will be tightly clamped in place. It will be understood that a number of these back plates may be provided, of different sizes, such number corresponding to the number of pairs of the slots 10.
The cap or cover plate 13 is of greater diameter than the maximum diameter of the body 5, and is provided upon one side with a spring locking bar 14 which is centrally fixed to the cap plate and has its ends angularly bent, as at 15. This spring retaining bar is longitudinally curved as shown, and the ends thereof are adapted to fit within the circular body of the fiue stop, said spring bar being bowed at the ends thereof to ride over the inwardly projecting annular rib 6 and engage beyond the same. When the spring retaining bar is in its normal condition, the ends thereof exert an outward pressure against the walls of the body plate 5, thus securely retaining the cap or cover plate in position. It will be understood that this cover plate engages against the wall around the edge of the flue opening, and the same may be covered with paper corresponding to the wall paper.
In the manner above explained, it will be seen that I have produced a very simple and effective flue stop which will absolutely prevent sparks or soot issuing from the chimney flue into the room or compartment.
The flue stop may be very easily and quickly adjusted and fitted into flue openings of various sizes.
A large number of the flue stops may also be compactly nested so that they will occupy but little shelf space, and may also be conveniently stored or packed for transportation.
Owing to the extreme simplicity of my invention, it will be apparent that the same can be produced at small manufacturing cost.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several elements employed, it is manifest that the device is susceptible of considerable modification, and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. A flue stop including a body consisting of a sheet metal cylinder split longitudinally and provided adjacent its longitudinal edges with means to adjustably connect said i edges together, and a back plate adapted to be arranged in one end of said cylindrical body andclamped thereby at its periphery when the longitudinal edges of the body are connected.
2. A flue stop including a body consisting of a sheet metal cylinder split longitudinally and provided adjacent its longitudinal edges with means to adj ustably connect said edges together, said cylindrical body being further provided on one end with an internal annular groove, a back plate adapted to be removably engaged in said groove and clamped in position by the body sheet when the longitudinal edges thereof are connected, and a cap plate provided with means to fit within the body of the flue stop, said body being further provided with means formed therein for engagement by the means on the cap plate to retain the latter in position against the end of the cylindrical body.
3. A flue stop including a body consisting of a sheet metal cylinder split longitudinally and provided adjacent its longitudinal edges with means for adjustably connecting said edges together, said cylindrical body being also provided upon one end with an inwardly projecting annular flange and an internal annular rib adjacent to said flange, a back plate adapted to be engaged at its outer edge between said rib and flange and securely clamped in place by the body sheet when the longitudinal edges thereof are con- I nected, and a cap plate provided with a resilient bar adapted to fit Within the other end of said body, the sheet metal bodyplate being provided adjacent to its latter end with an annular internal rib for engagement by the ends of the resilientbar whereby the cap plate is retained in position against the end of the cylindrical body.
