To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. MCLANE,
Memphis, in the county of Scotland and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pumpsand Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices adapted to be used for the double purpose of an engine or a ump. An object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, provided with what is known as a cam piston adapted to be so operated as to: move within a cylinder, for the purpose of either driving water entering into the cylinder through a suitable inlet formed therein, or to rotate a drive pula shaft, by the action of steam operated against said piston through a suitable port, the said steam, after entering, being allowed to exhaust from the cylinder through a suitable outlet.
Another object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel'features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a wertical longitudinal sectional view through my improved pump or engine; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line wa of Fig. 1; Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detailed. perspective dividing plate and retaining blocks respectively.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved device, comprising a substantially cylindrical casing 2, mounted upon a same being closed at its opplates 4, bolted together upon opposite sides of the said cylindrical casing within said cylinder 2 by suitable bolts, or other desired fastenings, 5. These end plates 4 are centrally apertured, as at 6, for the oppositely eX- tending ends of a transverse shaft 7, which has keyed to its intermediate portion between the end plates 4: the inner eccentric 8, which inner eccentric is adapted to be keyed, or otherwise secured, within the outer eccentric 9, having a centrally roughened surface 9 covering half the circumference of the eccentric 9, adapted to be loosely contained within a centrally located aperture 10, formed within a cam piston 11.
The use of the inner and outer eccentrics 8 and 9 serves to increase or diminish the stroke of the cam piston 11, when the outer eccentric 9 is turned upon the inner eccentric 8. At a point upon one side of the cylindrical casing 2,'inlet and outlet bores, or openings, 12 and 13 are formed to extend into the opening within said cylinder, and at a point between said bores the interior of the casing is transversely, slotted, as at 16, for the reception of a suitable blade, or partition, 15, adapted to be normally, contamed therein at one side, and having its opposite end projectingwithin a transverse slot 14; formed transversely of the previously mentioned cam piston 11. This slot 16 is tapered toward the outer surface of the piston, and is provided at opposite edges of said slot with depressions 17, within which depressions are adapted to be inserted blocks 18, adapted to contact with the opposite sides of the blade or partition 15, and retain same tightly within the transverse slot 16.
The operation of the device, when the same is used as a pump, is as follows: Power is transmitted to the transverse shaft 7, which obviously rotates the eccentrics 8 and 9 in unison, and moves the cam piston 11 backward and forward across the opening located within the cylinder, obviously increasing and diminishing the spaces formed by the transverse partition or blade 15, and driving all liquid en- 3 tering the said opening through the inlet 12 out through the outlet 13 and to any desired point. When the device is to be used as an engine, steam or the like is admitted through the ports- 12 or 13, which, as it contacts with the adjacent edge of the cam piston will serve to operate the same backward and forward across the opening formed within the cylinder, obviously rotating the transverse shaft 7 through the medium of the eccentrics 8 and 9 in a manner the reverse of when the same used as a pump.
From the foregomg disclosure. will be manifest that a device of the character pre- ,viously described is provided for which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully describedthis invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
In a device ofthe character described, the combination with a circular casing, of a shaft journaled in and extending concentrically through the casing, a cam formed integral upon the shaft intermediate its ends and centrally thereof, on'e side of said cam being flush with the shaft, an'eccentrically apertured sleeve adjustably mounted on said cam and having a roughened outer surface centrally of its, ends, a piston rotatably vided with a radially extending. tapered groove, having curved recesses formed adjacent the outer end of said groove and forming a clrcular recess, blocks mounted In said recesses, a partit on rlgidly secured to the interior wall of the casing and slidably engaging said blocks, and saidcasing having intake and exhaust ports provided on each side of said partition.
