Be it known that I, CARL J. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Provo, in the county of Utah and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotar Pumps, of which the following is a speci cation?.
My invention relates to pumps and has for its object to provide a compact rotary ballvalve pump wherein centrifugal action, and a water pressure in the 1discharge pipe, act on the balls to hold them in the water passage of the pump. i These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying dra'wings in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate vlike parts throughout the several views and as described in the s ecification forming a part of this application and pointed out inthe appendedclaims.

My invention consists of a casingl A having an open interior and provided with a closure plate B on one side thereof; said casing is provided with a threaded inlet opening and a threaded outlet opening D. bearing boss a is integrally formed on the said casing A and a like boss b on the closure plate B. The said casing A is excentrically bored through its sidewall with the bore extending through its boss a, and the said closure plate B is excentrically bored in alinement with the bore in the said casing A, and with the bore extendedv part way through the boss b to form a busl ing chamber'e which is bushed with graphite or ether suitable bushings, as at c, to forni a bearing for the shaft E of the pump. liquid may pass from the discharge pipe D to the interior of an impeller F. A lubricating ipe 3 is inserted in the discharge opening and connects the interior of said opening with the shaft E for lubricating the said Shaft E in its bearing. The interior of said case A is bored out to form an annular ball casing vrecess 4, and a portion of the closure plate B is similarly recessed to form `|the opposed annular recess 5 for the other side o the ball casing. The ball-carrying impeller is mounted on said shaft E and secured thereto to position the said impeller ,F concentrically within the said recesses 4 cesses 4 and 5 are carried the respective ball as to said shaft E and impeller F. Each of said ball cases II has portions cut from its periphery to form an opening for the intake, as shown at 8,'and one for the discharge of the liquid to the interior of the pump, as at 9, and the interior of the said case A is. internally cut away contiguous said openings Band 9 to form the intake and discharge chambers of the pump, as shown at J and K. Ihe operation of my pump is as follows: Wlth power applied to rapidly rot-ate the shaft E, the balls G will be, by centrifugal force,` held to their outer position in said ball cases H and water will be drawn through vthe inlet C and carried in the excentric space 15 between said cases H and the periphery of the impeller from opening J to opening K and be forced through the discharge opening. The pressure of the water through the pipe 1 and bore 2 will force the plunger cups 16 outwardly in their respective radially-disposed chambers M and prevent the balls vfrom falling by gravity away from the inner wall of the cases H; and said balls will force the water between the cases and the periphery of the impeller F through the discharge opening.
Having thus described my invention,v I desire to secure by Letters Patent and v of said casing; `a packing carried in said bore; a shaft journalled in said packing, one end of which is spaced from the end of said bore and centrally bored and on which a ball 30 carrying impeller is secured; a pipe connecting the discharge opening of said casing with the central bore of said shaft; radially disposed orts from the'said central bore to the peripiiery of said shaft; a ball-carrying impeller mounted excentrically in the interior of said casing; a plurality of balls carried in said impeller; radially disposed central bores through said impeller; plunger cups carried in said radial bores by which said balls are supported and adapted to be moved outwardly when the water is discharged through the discharge pipe connected with the outlet opening of said casmg.
2. A rotary pump( comprising a hollowed out casing having' an inlet and an outlet opening connected with the interior ot said casing; a ball race carried within said casing and having elongated slots in its periphery in open connection with the respective openings in said casing; a ball-carrying impeller excentrically mounted in said casing and ball race and having radially disposed openings therein; a ball carried in each `ot saidl impeller openings and operable within said race; and a rotatable shaft journalled in said -casing and on whichv said impeller is secured.
