To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New have invented new and useful Improvenients in Combined Motors and Pumps, of which thefollowing is a specifircation. 1 I
This invention relates to a combined movtor and-pump, the objectin view being to provide in one unitary device a motor and a pump in which the saine rotor `is used for both purposes. The said rotor is adapted either by compressed air or steam and is also adapted to propel or pump water or liquid-'of any kind.
lA further object of the invention is to produce *a combined motor and pump of the `rotary type in which provision is made-for clearance of the liquid vfrom the pockets or pocketwalls against which the compressed air or steam is directed'for imparting motion to the rotor.
With the above andother objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, herein fully described, claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1- is an end view of the combinedv motor and pump.
Fig. 2 thereof.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the irregular line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on the irregular line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the rotor blades or wings.
Fig. 6 is an outer edge view of the same.
In the preferred embodiment of this inthe casing of the rotor comprises a main body 1 which' is generally cylindrical in formation and closed at the opposite sides thereof by heads 2. Each of the heads 2 is formed with an outwardly extending bearing 3 in which the shaft 5 of the rotor is journaled, said shaft being carried by and having a fixed relation to the rotor and the end portions thereof 'being received in bushings 6 of bronze, white metal or any other suitable antifriction material. The heads 2 are secured to the main body 1 of the casing by fastening means 7 The casing is provided with an attaching base 8 and is formed with an opening 9 to exhaust port 12. rlhe illustrated 'and s alongitudinal sectional view Y Y Speccaton of Letters Patent. v Patntd M31-, 4 '1919, "Appiipationiiiedriaya191s. seriai No. 232,631. l
. receive asteam or air injecting nozzle 10V Awhich is removably threaded therein as indicated atV 11. The casingV is also formedV with an exhaust connection 12 for thesteam a'liquid inlet 13 and a liquid outlet 14.
Mounted within the casing is a rotor V15 formed in the periphery thereof with transversely extending arcuate pockets or buckets 16 into which the compressed air, steamy or other fluid under pressure is directed by the nozzle 10 which discharges in a line substantially tangential to the periphery of f the rotor 15 as shown in Figl2.r yThe bore 17 of the nozzle communicates directly witha bore 18 formedY in an innerwall'l)l of the rotor casing, said wall 19 having a curved or arcuate' face 20v lying opposite the periphery vof the rotor 15 as shown in Fig. 2. Between the wall 19 andthe outer wall 21 of the casing a A'passageway 22 is left, the receiving end 23 lof which is-located above the wall 19 so as to enable any water or other liquidlremaining in the buckets or pockets 16 to pass around the nozzle'l() and downward to the compressed air, steam or other fluid, escapes at the bottom of the wall 19 and passes outv through the exhaust port 12.
4The rotor is formed with radially extending guideways 24 in which are arranged sli'dable blades orwings 25 each of lwhich is yieldingly pressed in an outward `direction by means offa compression spring 26 arranged in the guideway 24 and partly within a recess 27 in the respective blade or wing 25. In its outer edge, each blade 25 is formed rwith an arcuate pocket or bucket-28. The
casing is formed with an eccentric inner wall 29 leaving a crescent shaped-pumping chamber 30. During the movement of the blades to facilitate the application of the fastening means 7 .t
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will now be understood that a single rotor yacts as the rotating element of a motor and asthe rotating element of `a pump. 'Said rotor embodies one means acted upon by the motive fluid for impartingrotary motion thereto, and it embodies otherl means for j -eli'ecting-the pumping action referred to.
Both of said means are carried by thel rotor and operate independently of 'each other.
The blades or 4wings 25 arev pressed outwardly` only during their movementA through pumping chamber 30, thereby giving an enlarged and free outlet for the liquid operatedv upon by the blades or wings of the roe toi', avoiding back pressure and enabling the Y power is concerned.
the rotor, and yieldableV means pump to be'driven-economically 'as far as 1. A combined motor and pump, comprising a casing having an inlet nozzle-for the motive fluid, an exhaust outlet therefor, and also provided with liquid inlet and outlet ports, a rotor mounted witliin'said casing and formed in the periphery thereof with pockets the wallsof which form impact faces pumping blades carried; by said rotor and slidable radially in relation to the center of said blades outwardly.
V2. A combined motor and pump, compris- Oopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Comm Washington, D. C.
for urging Ying a casing having-an inlet nozzle for the motive fluid, an exhaust outlet therefor, and
yalso provided withfliquid inlet and outlet ports, av rotor mounted Within said casing andformedin the periphery thereofl with pockets the Walls of which form impact.
faces against which the motive fluid operates to transmit motion to the rotor, the casing havinga portion of its inner peripheral wall eccentric to the periphery of therotor,
forming a crescent shaped pumping chamber, pumping blades carried by lsaid rotor and slidable radially in relation Vto the center of the rotor, and yieldable means for urging ing acasing having an V,iii-let nozzle for the? motive fluid, an exhaust 'outlet therefor, and
also provided Witli'rliqluid inlet and outlet j ports, a rotor Amounted lwithin said casing e and formed inthe periphery thereof with pockets the walls of'which form impact faces-5V against which the' motive, fluid operates to transmit motion to the rotor, the .casing having a portion ofl its inner peripheral wall eccentric to the periphery of the rotor, form-v ing a-crescent shaped-pumping chamber, l pumping `blades `carriedbysarid rotorand slidable radially in relation to the ,Center ofV against which the motive fluid operates-to transmit motion to the rotor, the casing having a portion of its inner peripheral wallY eccentric to the periphery of the rotor, forining a crescent shaped pumping chamber,
the rotor, and yieldable means for Vurging said blades outwardly, said casing embodying any inner wall in spaced relation to the outer wall thereof, said inner Wall being formed with a bore in line with said nozzle and disposed tangentially to the rotor and substantially in line withthe exhaust port.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
