To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, SrUnonoN E. DursooLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shire, in the county of Grimes and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l Vindow- Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in locking devices particularly adapted for windows and similar relatively movable members, whereby said members may be effectively held at any desired position or securely locked against movement.
The object in view is the provision of a suitable device embodying a casing designed to be disposed upon a window sash, having a locking plunger projecting therefrom for contact with the window frame, in such a manner that movement of the sash is per mitted in one direction while movement in the other direction will cause interlocking of the plunger with its casing, and by the employment of a pair of such plungers a locking action of the window sash is effected to prevent movement in the other direction.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary view showing the application of a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the fastener in use; and Fig. 3 is a view with the cover of the lock casing removed to show more clearly the details of construction.
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
It will be understood that the fastener comprising my invention is capable of use in different relative positions wherever it is desired to hold or look a movable member with respect to a cooperating stationary member but in the drawing the fastener is illustrated as secured to a window sash and adapted to cooperate with the window frame for locking said sash against movement.

The casing comprises essentially a cover 3 and a housing 3 secured together by suitable fastening means such as a rivet -fl. casing are provided a pair of openings 5 and 5 through which project a pair of plungers 6-7. lit is to be particularly noted that these plungers 6 are disposed at opposite inclinations within the casing 3 and are each longitudinally movable for purposes hereinafter to be more specifically described, It is also desirable that each of the openings 5 and 5 be of a su'llicient size to permit of a slight lateral movement of the respective plungers each of which is normally held projected from the casing 3 by means of spiral springs 8 wound about the stems of the plungers and located within the casing, These plungers, furthermore, on the ends contiguous to the window frame 1, are provided with serrations or teeth 5) which normally impinge against the window frame and hold the window sash, as will be readily understood, at any desired position in its ordinary vertical. While it is obvious that a single one of these plungers may readily be employed to accomplish the fastening function hereinbe fore described, the employment of a pair of such plungers disposed at inclinations shown most clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawing will lock the sash securely against movement in either direction so long as the serrations or teeth 9 contact with the frame 1. That is to say, the phu'lger 6 will prevent upward movement of the sash by reason of the fact that the teeth 9 are so formed as to bite into the frame when an attempt is made to raise the sash, and similarly teeth 9 of the plrmger 7 incline in an opposite direction so that downward movement of said sash. will insure the en'ibedding of the teeth in the frame, thereby preventing movement of the sash in this direction. The positive locking action of the sash, however, takes place by reason of the formation of serrations or teeth on the sides of each of the plungers which serrations are referred to by the numorals 6 and 7. Specifically describing this interlocking action it will be understood that an upward movement of the sash will tend to move the plunger 6 laterally, or downwardly, the serrations 6 engaging At one side of the Figs. 1
the contiguous edge portion of the opening of the casing, eifectively preventing the plunger from moving longitudinally into its casing 3. A downward movement of the sash is permitted by the plunger 6 since the inclination of the teeth of this plunger will permit the same to slide downwardly on the frame without binding action. However such downward movement of the sash causes the interlocking of the plunger 7 in exactly the same manner above described with reference to the plunger 6, the teeth 7 on the plunger 7 interlocking with the contiguous edge of the opening 5', in an obvious manner.
Each of the plungers, as shown clearly in and 2 of the drawing, is provided with a finger piece or knob 10 and when authorized movement of the window sash in an upward direction is desired the plunger 6 is disengaged from the frame 1 by moving said finger piece laterally, a suitable slot 11 being provided in the casing to per mit such movement. YVith the plunger 6 thus retracted the sash will move upward while the plunger 7 slides along the frame 1. A similar movement of the sash in a downward direction is accomplished by retracting the plunger 7 in the same manner while allowing the plunger 6 to slide in engagement with the frame 1.
Any desired means for securing the sash lock hereinbefore described may be employed for disposing the same upon a window sash, openings through the casing 3 being provided for screws or like fastening devices 12.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. In a fastening device of the class described, the combination of relatively movable and stationary members, a casing mounted upon one of said members, a locking member slidably mounted in said casing and disposed at an oblique angle, means normally holding said member in contact with one of said first mentioned members and yieldable to permit free movement of the movable member in one direction, and locking teeth on said locking member adapted to cooperate with the casing upon movement of the movable member in the opposite direction.
2. In a sash lock for windows, the combination with a casing, a longitudinally movable plunger mounted in said casing, said plunger being also movable laterally, and locking teeth in said plunger for cooperating with the casing upon lateral movement of the plunger whereby to prevent longitudinal movement of the latter.
3. In a sash lock for windows, the combination with a casing having an opening therein, a locking plunger projecting from said opening and disposed on an incline in said casing, teeth formed on one side of said plunger and adapted to interlock with the edge of the opening in the casing upon lateral movementof the plunger whereby to prevent movement of the plunger within the casing.

In a locking device of the class described, the combination of stationary and movable members, a casing carried by one of said members, a pair of locking plungers disposed therein at opposite inclinations, means for moving said plungers inwardly of the casing to permit free movement of the movable member, means for normally holding said plungers in contact with one of said first mentioned members, and locking means on each of said plungers adapted to interlock with the casing whereby to prevent movement of the movable member in either direction.
5. In a sash lock for windows, the combination of a casing having openings at one side thereof, a pair of convergingly arranged locking plungers disposed in said casing for longitudinal movement, springs wound about said plungers within the casing for normally holding said plungers projected through the openings aforesaid, teeth formed on the ends of said plungers, and locking teeth formed on the sides of said plungers, said last mentioned teeth being adapted to interlock with the contiguous edge portions of the openings of said casing upon lateral movement of the plungers and finger pieces on each of said plungers for retracting the latter within the casing.
