RAILROADSCRI}?T HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 13, 1912.
Patented Dee. 9,1913. semi No. 690,493.
To all 'whom z't may concern.
Be it lnown that I, GEORGE H. CLEVELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Script I-Iolders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railroad script and holders therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient arrangement whereby the proper amount or length of script may be torn off without computing the amount in the head and also to provide a simple and efficient holder which will not get out of shape by constant handling and inattention.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character employing means for holding a quantity of script in such a manner that it may be readily drawn over al computing or measuring board together with a cutting knife which may be moved longitudinally of the board and held upon the paper at the point at which it is desired to out the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is compact in form, simple in construction, durable, and which may be manipulated at an extremely low cost.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. l.
Referring to the dra-wings and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4, 1 represents what will be hereinafter known as the computing or measuring board and which is preferably constructed of a sheet of metal with its edges turned over into retaining flanges 2 which are adapted to hold an identification card 3 upon the rear face of the board. Throughout the majority of the length of the board, the same is provided with a plurality of parallel lines 4 and between the lines in a marginal space 5, there is placed suitable indicia, this preferably in the nature of a sequence of numerals to indicate the amount desired to be torn off the strip of script which is indicated at 7. This strip is held in a roll 8 within a tubular casing 9 formed by bending up the lower end of the strip of metal of which the board is formed. This cylinder or tube 9 is provided with removable end caps 10 secured in position in any suitable manner and carrying a shaft 11 which passes loosely through the caps and is provided with a knurled button 12 upon one end so that the script may be wound upon the shaft when desired. The opposite end of the shaft is provided with a retaining nut 13 so as to prevent disengagement of the shaft, as will be understood. Adjacent the marginal space 5, the board has bent up therefrom suitable ears 14 which are secured around the ends of a longitudinal shaft 15 upon which is slidably mounted a cutter bar 16. This cutter bar may be held against the board by means of a spring, as is shown in Fig. 7, or may be pivoted directly upon the rod, as is shown, and be provided with a clip 17 pivoted to its free end and adapted to take over the edge of the board, as shown in Fig. 4.
lVhat is claimed as new is 1. A script holder comprising a fiat plate having its edges turned into retaining fianges, an identification card secured to the rear of the plate by said flanges, a guiding bar connected with the plate, a cutter member slidably mounted upon said guiding.
bar, and a cylinder formed at the end of the plate for holding a roll of script whereby it may be fed over the plate.
2. A script holder comprising a flat plate having its edges turned into retaining iianges, an identification card secured to the rear of the plate by said flanges, a guiding bar connected with the plate, a cutter member slidably mounted upon said guiding bar, a cylinder formed at the end of the plate for holding a roll of script whereby it may be fed over the plate, removable ends for closing the cylinder, and a winding shaft journaled in said removable ends.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signa ture in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. CLEVELAND.
