DANIEL- soN, a citlzen of the United States, residing at Colfax, inthe county of Dunn, State of \Visconsin, have invented certaininew. and useful Improvements in Folding Chicken- Coopsyand I do hereby declarev the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,.such as will enable others skilled in, the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention. is directed to improvements in folding chickenicoops, and has for. its-object toprovide an article of this character so constructed that the same cairbe folded into acompact form for. transportation or storage.

A further object: of: the invention is to provide a coop so constructed that its sides and ends can be held intheir operative positions and the top being so constructed that it can be opened to remove the fow'ls from the coop without unfolding-the same.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a coop Which is exceedingly simple in construction, durable, and one which can be easily cleansed.

l/Vith these and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the coop showing it in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a bot tom plan view of the same on a reduced scale. Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view through the device when in its operative position. Fig. 5 is a side view of the coop folded. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line 7-7 of Fi 6. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view through the coop in its folded position.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the bottom, which is formed from wood and has its end edges provided with upper and lower metallic strips 2 and 3, respectively, the ends of the upper strips being riveted to the metallic side strips 1, said rivets serving also to connect the lower strips 3. To further brace the bottom 1 diagonally disposed metallic strips 5 are provided and have their ends connected to the rivets which secure the other strips in place.

The sides 8 consist of rectangular metallic frames 9 which are provided with wire mesh fillings 10. To etfectually brace the sides 8 V-shaped brace bars 11 are connected thereto. The ends 12 also consist.(if-metallic rectangular frames 13, having the wire mesh fillings 1 1, saidcnds being hingedly connected at their lower edges to the upper brace strips 2, and are adapted to fold inwardly when itis desired to fold the coop. Theends of the frames 12 have their upper ends provided with .plates15 which are adapted to engage slots 16 formed in the ends of the frames t),

said plates bcingprovided. with perforations 17 for receiving the pins 18, which serve to detachably connect the ends 12 and sides 8 in their unfolded or operative position.

Ilingedly connected to the upper edges of the sides 8 are top sections 19, which are of such proportions that their free edges are spaced apart when the coop is in its operative position, said sections consisting of metallic rectangular frames 20 having the wire mesh fillings 2t. The ends of the frames 20 are provided with slots 22 which are engaged by the vertical plates 23 carried by the upper edges of the ends 12, said plates being provided with perforations 2 1 for engagement by the pins 25, which serve to hold the sections 1.9 in their closed positions.

Ilingedly connectedv to the free edge of one of the top sections 1!) are supplemental top sections 26, which also consist of metallic rectangular frames 27 provided with wire mesh fillings 28. The end edges of the sup plemental top sections 26 are provided with slots 29 which are engaged by the vertical plates 30 carried by the upper edge of the ends 12, said plates being provided with perfo 'ations 31 for engagement by the pins 32 so as to hold the supplemental sections in their closed positions. Each supplemental section is provided with a knob 33 whereby either one can be opened upon removal of the pins 32 so that the fowls can be removed from the coop when desired.

When it is desired to fold the coop it is only necessary that the top sections 19 and supplemental sections 26 be disengaged from the plates carried by the ends, and the sides swung slightly away from the ends, whereupon the ends are folded upon the upper surface of the bottom 1, after which one of the sides 8 and its section 19 are folded upon the ends. The other side and the section 19 and supplemental sections 26 are then folded upon the other side and top section.

To hold the coop in its folded position leather straps 34 are provided and have one of the ends secured to the bottom 1, and are passed through slots 35 formed in the bottom 1, and adjacent the side edge thereof, said straps having their free ends provided with button holes 36 which are adapted to detachably engage the knobs 38 carried by the supplemental top sections 26. Similar straps 36 are provided and are adapted to have their free ends engage the knobs 37 carried by the ends of the top section 19 to which the supplemental top sections 26 are connected. It is obvious that when it is desired to unfold the coop it is only necessary to reverse the operation, it also being apparent that the brackets 7 upon one edge of the bottom 1 are slightly greater in height than the others, so that the sides can fold compactly.

What is claimed is A coop of the class described comprising a bottom, brackets connected to the side edges of said bottom, sides hingedly connected to the brackets, ends hingedly connected to the ends of the bottom, plates carried by the ends, slots formed in the sides for engagement by said plates, top sections hingedly connected to the sides, and supplemental top sections hingedly connected to one of the top sections, knobs carried by one of the top sections and supplemental sections, vertical plates carried by the ends and adapted to engage the top sections and supplemental sect-ions, means engaging said plates to hold the top sections and supplemental sections in their closed positions, straps connected to the under surface of the bottom, slots formed in the bottom, said straps being passable through the slots, said straps having their free ends adapted for detachable engagement with the knobs when the sides, ends, top sections and supplemental sections are folded.
