DISPLAY-LID.
translucent material designed to be utilized for permitting perishable merchandise, and especially cigars, or like tobacco products, which are usually packed in boxes, to be displayed for sale without being subjected to damage by collecting dust, or having the natural moisture thereof evaporated by exposure to the air, there-by saving the loss resulting from depreciation of the quality of the products when exhibited inthe ordinary way.
Another object of the invention is to provide gripping elements hingedly connected to the lid, and which are adapted to be removably held to the lid proper of the box in a manner whereby the transparent display lid may be opened, or closed upon the body of the box by swinging the lid proper thereof to open, or closed posit-ions.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a form of transparent display lid which is susceptible of being made at a price to permit one to be applied upon each box of cigars, or the like, if desired, without materially increasing the usual expense thereof.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forl'ning a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate correspondinp parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the appended claims. i
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigar box with one form of display lid embodying my invention applied thereon. Fig. 2 is a. fragmentary view, partly in section, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a view, partly fragmentary and partly in section, showing an enlarged ide elevation of one of the gripping elements shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 1s a section taken on the line of Fig, ,3. Fig. 5 is a frag- Specification of Letters Patent.

mentary view showing a gripping element in erspective of a ditferent form adapted to. fie used in conjunction with the display lid, and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view, shoW ing a side elevation of the modified form of gripping element.
The display lid, or device has a plate 10 made of glass, or transparent, or translucent material, and secured to the marginal edges of said plate is a frame 11. The plate 10 and the frame 11 are preferably rectangular, or square in shape, and said plate-and frame are made of a size to fit snugly but freely movable between the upper part of the walls of the body 12 of a standard shape, or any preferred type of box, as 13, adapted to contain merchandise, or cigars, or other tobacco products, and to which is hinged in the usual manner a lid, as 14.
In order to permit. the device to be removably held to the lid 14 of the box whereby it may be opened, or closed thereupon, I provide two gripping elements, as 15 and 1G. The gripping elements 15 and 16 are alike in formation, and each of said elements has an angula", or substantially L-shaped supporting rod whereby two arms, as 17 and 18, are provided. The arm 17 of one of the rods is pivot-ally disposed in a tubular member, or collar 19 which may be soldered, or otherwise fastened upon the corner of one ide of the frame 11 of the device, and at the corresponding corner of the opposite side of the frame is fastened a similar tubular member, or collar 20 in which is pivotally held the arm I? of the rod of the second gripping element, or both of the tubular members, or collars l9 and '20 may be dispcnscd with, and the arms 18 of the supporting rods may be soldered, or other *ise secured to the frame.
Secured in any suitable manner to the arms lb of the rods of the gripping-tale mcnts 1.3 and to are clamps, or sleeves, as :21 and 2:2. both of which are correspondingly formed. and said clamps are adapted to engage tllr lid of the box to permit the device to be movcd hingedly to and from the body of the box. as will be hereinafter more fully dcscribcd: Each of the clamps, or sleeves ll and 2; have spaced side members, or flanges 223 and "H, the opposite edges of each of which are bridged by a transverse plate 95 formed upon each of the arms 18 of the supporting rods. By thus forming the clamps 21 and 22 the side edges of the lid of the box will be received, as shown in Fig. 1,
between the members 23 and 24 of said clamps when swung in a direction toward the lid, and as I prefer to make said clamps 5 of spring sheet metal the lid will be tightly engaged thereby. But as the members 23 and 24 will tend in this form of clamp when made of metal to spread apart after being used a number of times, and thereby prevented from being held upon the lid of the box, I compensate for all spreading of these parts by providing upon each clamp a clip, as 30. As indicated, each of the clips 26 is integrally formed with the member 23 of each of the clamps by slitting the central part thereof in substantially the shape of a U, and the strip, or tongue thus provided is curved, or struck inwardly of the members 23 and 24 so as to engage the opposed surface of the lid when inserted therebe-v tween should the members 23 and 24 be sprung in opposite directions, or should the lids of difi'erent boxes vary in thickness. If desired the clips 26 of the clamps may be dispensed with, and instead I may employ a transverse rod, as 26, for holding the clamps against displacement when titted upon the edges of the lid of a box. The transverse rod 26 is adapted to be detachably applied to the clamps 21 and 22, and for this purpose, upon the member 23 of each of said clamps is provided a sleeve 26 and 26. The ends of the rod 26 are bent, as 26 and 26 at corresponding right angles to the rod, and as the body proper of said rod is of substantially the same length as the width of the lid of the box, the bent ends will enter sleeves 26 and 26 when the rod is positioned transversely of the lid and is forced in a downward direction, as" shown in Fig. 1. The clamps will then be tightly held upon the. lid-of the box.
In Figs. 5 and 6 are shown somewhat different forms of clamps, as 27 and 28. The 457c'lamps 27 and 28 are preferably made of spring wire, and each of said clamps has spaced side members 29 and 30 and a bridging member 31 at one end thereof whereby the opposite side edges of the lid of the box may be guided between said side members. Each of these clamps 27 and 28 is formed by bending the Wire of the arm 18 of the supporting rod of each gripping element so that the bent portion will be disposed against, or in spaced parallel relation to each of the arms 18 so as to form the side member 29 of each of the clamps. The bridging member 31 of each of the clamps is formed by then bending the tire trans- 60 posed in a direction somewhat toward the versely, and by bending the wire in a direc-,
side member 29 thereof, and by curving the free end of each of the side members 30 in an opposite direction an integral clip, or engaging portion, as 32, will be provided upon each of these clamps so as to compensate for any spreading of the side members 'as well as permitting the clamps to hold the lids of boxes of different thicknesses.
By hinging the gripping elements 15 and 16 upon the opposite sides of the frame '11 of the device, as hereinbefore described, the clamps thereof are adapted when moved to circumscribc the radius of a circle so that when the transparent plate 10 and its frame are applied upon the body of the box, as
I shown in Fig. 1, the clamps of the gripping elements are swung so that the side members thereof will be guided over the opposite side edges of the lid of the box and removably held thereto through the engagement 'of the clips of the clamps with the lid. In
this manner perishable merchandise, or cigars, or other tobacco products may be. displayed for sale without risking being damaged by dust. or exposure to the air. 'hcn it is desired to dispense the contents of the box, by guiding the lid 14 thereof in a direction backwardly of the body of the box the transparent plate and the frame of the device will then be moved in a similar direction to an open position, and said plate and frame will be closed upon the body of the box by rcversely swinging/the lid 14.
In the foregoingdescription, I have embodied the gaferred form of my invention, but I,. tlo"rio wish to be understood as limit ing thyself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination with a box having a lid hinged thereto, of a frame inclosing a transparent plate and movably applied upon the top of the body of the box, two clamps, each pivotally held at corresponding opposite parts of the frame and each being guided over opposite parts of the edge of the lid of the box, two sleeves one provided upon each of the clamps, and a rod having bent ends, each end being removably disposed in one of said sleeves.
2. The combination with a box having a lid hinged thereto, of a frame inclosing a transparent plate and movably applied upon the top of the body of the box, two tubular members provided at correspondin oppo site parts of the frame, two clamps of'sprmg material, one pivotally held to each of the tubular members ,and such clamps being guided over opposite parts of the edge of the lid of the box, two sleeves, one provided upon each of the clamps, and a rod having bent ends, each end being removably disposed in one of said sleeves,
P. The combination with a box having a lid hinged thereto, of a frame inelosing :1 trans-pa rent plate and movably applied upon the top of the body of the box, two chimps pivotally held at corresponding opposite l parts of the frame, and each of said clamps 3 having two spaced side members guided over opposite parts of the edge of the lid, two bridging members, one integrally formed upon the corresponding ends of the side members of each clamp, two sleeves, one provided upon each of the corresponding members of each clamp, and a rod having bent ends, each end being reinovably dis- 5 posed in one of said sleeves.
4. The combination with a box having a IGCtflHWlfll lid hinged thereto, of a frame inclo= not a transparent plate and min-ably applied. upon the top of the body of the box. i
two tubular members provided upon the opposite side edges at the corresponding corners of the frame, two angula support- ,ing rods, each having one of its arms r0- tata'ble in one of the 'ti'ibulhr members, two clamps, one secured to each of the second arms of the'tubular members, and each of said chimps having two spaced yielding side members guided over opposite parts of the edge of the lid,-and two bridging members,
one integrally formed upon the corresponding ends of the side members of each clamp, two sleeves, one provided upon each of the correspomling members of each clamp, and a rod having bent ends, each endbeing removably disposed in one of said sleeves.
This specification signed and witnessed this twenty sixth day of November A. I). 1912.
