TROUSERS-BELT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 19, 1912.
Patented Nov. 1 8, 1913.
Serial No. 726,651.
To all whom 2'25 may concern Be it known that we, ALrnnn K. VAN- nnn and Riemann DALBIMK, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in 'lrousers-Belts, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
Our invention relates to a trousers-bel t, and its object is to provide a belt which will be comfortable to the wearer, which will be of neat appearance and which will suitably take up any slack in the waistband of the trousers.
In warm weather it is customary to dispense with the suspenders which are commonly employed for supporting trousers in position on the wearer, and to employ in lieu thereof a leather belt which is passed through loops sewn on the trousers at intervals about the waistband. In order that suspenders may also be worn, if desired, the trousers are also customarily provided with the usual three pairs of buttons :bout the waistband, one of said pairs of buttons being at the rear upon the outer side of the waistband. Ordinarily these buttons perform no function except in connection with suspenders.
One of the main objections to supporting trousers solely by means of a belt is that, since the belt is unyielding, if it be drawn tight enough to properly support the trousers, it becomes uncomfortable to the wearer. A further serious objection is that the ordinary belt gathers the trousers at the front, especially if there be much slack, and causes unsightly wrinkles.
The object of our invention is to support the trousers in such manner that the aboveinentioned objections are overcome and the necessity for the use of suspenders eliminated.
Our invention consists of a trousers belt which, throughout the major portion of its length and particularly the portion which surrounds the sides and front of the waistband, is of ordinary construction, but which at the middle of its length, that is the section that fits about the extreme rear of the waistband, is of elastic, preferably adjustable in length, and which is provided with loops or eyes adapted to engage the usual pair of buttons provided on the rear of the waistband.
our invention may be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which l igure 1 is a perspective view of a belt in position about the waistbaml of a pair of trousers, the trousers being broken away at the rear to more fully disclose the belt. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view looking down upon the rear portion of the v: 'stband of a pair of trousers and the belt of our invention; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged, fragmentary, perspective view of a portion of the belt.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
referring to the drawings, the waistband 1 of a pair of trousers is shown as provided with the usual loops 2 for receiving the belt and provided at its rear with the usual pair of buttons 3.
The belt of our invention consists of two leather sections l. and 5 provided at their outer ends with the usual buckles (3 and holes 7, respectively, for sccurinp together the outer ends of the belt. Th inner end of each leather section is provided, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, with a metallic end clip 8 for holdinp a metallic loop 9 of approximately the width of the belt. Threaded through the two loops 9 is an elastic band 10, the ends of which are secured together by a slide 11 of ordinary construction, whereby the length of the band 10 may be adjusted. The band 10 thus eonstitutes the central or back-section of the belt, and being); adjustable provides a belt which is adjustable in length. Threaded upon the inside section of the band 10 are two triangular shaped loops 12, which are adapted. to hook over the buttons 3, 3 upon the rea r of the waistband.
The wearer of the belt will adjust the elastic band 10 to such a length that when the loops 12. 12 are hooked over the buttons 3, 3, any slack in the waistband of the trousers is taken up at the rear, and the waistband is drawn snugly about; the waist of the wearer, thus preventing the trousers from beingwrinkled or drawn up in front. The loops 12, 12 being loosely threaded on the band 10 will be drawn to the opposite ends thereof, and will thus automatically adjust themselves with the adjustment of the band 10.
The leather sections are supported at their rear ends by the elastic fabric 10. When the belt is drawn about the Waist of the wearer, it is adapted to yield somewhat,
owing to the elasticity of the elastic fabric to which the ends are attached. Our invention thus provides a belt which presents the appearance of an ordinary leather belt. The trousers are thus supported by the leather portion of the belt aided by the central or back elastic section.
The belt does not lose its durability by with the usual pair of buttons provided upon the rear of the waistband of trousers, and the two leather sections being provided with means for securing their outer ends together.
2. A trousers-belt comprising two leather sections provided with means for securing their outer ends together and each provided at its inner end with a metallic loop of approximately the Width of said leather section, an adjustable elastic band threaded through said loops and constituting the central, back-section of the belt, and a pair of metallic button engaging loops loosely threaded on the inner section of said elastic band. a
'3. The combination in a trousers belt, of leather sections provided with usual means for holding the outer ends together, metallic loops, one at the rear end of each leather section, an adjustable elastic band threaded through said loops, said elastic band constituting the rear or back section of the belt, and means for attaching the elastic band to the rear suspender buttons of the trousers, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 40
In witness whereof, We hereunto subscribe our names this 16th day of October, A. D., 1912. e
