Description

am @am otrvna `danaarsou `.AND`
We, OLIVER S; GAnRErsoN andJ'oEL GAR- nETsoN, ofthe `city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of NewYork, have invented certain Imhprovementsin. Mop-Heads,`of which the following is I: specification. I i i Onr improvements relate to that class of mop-heads n ,which the. movable; jaw or binder, the ends of `which are attachedto anintervening nut, is operated l a tubular'screw iitted on and immovably-secured to the end ofthe handle solas toy rotate with the latter, l f-andcausethe said nut to traverse up and down thereon. v i y y" Inthis kind of mop-head theg'cnd 'off the handle is i commonly united to the'` stationary jaw or cross-head l by means of a loose rivetor pivot pin. l
'able hinder, causesconsiderable friction and wear be- `t Lthe head of thisrivetand the cross -head, vhich loosens, and not unfrcqucntly destroys the con- Vne` on'j'of the latter with the handle. i i
r l1 thisI kind of lnop-headitis also necessary to mp ysome means .to prevent` the `handle unscrewngd nd releasing the mop-cloth whilethe mop is being rse. "i" v 0i y vention consists-ff i Ifirsnin connecting the, handle to the stationary hy means of a pivoter'bearing-block, one'end of hrtsand is retained by a flange in the contractendfof the tubular screw, while the opposite end nrthe Socket ofthe jaw oreross-head, to' which movably riveted, whereby the friction and wear fcom s on the enlarged' surface of this block within the"`tubular Ascrewinstead of on thel head of ai small ivet.. i f" l y Second', in constructing `the end of the Atubular s, ,v, and the surface of the cross-head in`ccntact` therewith, the-one with teeth or slight projections, l which, yflitting in correspondiigr indentations formed y `in the other, form apartially rigid lock, `and prevent the handlefroni turning while operating with the mop,
` f ingsufficientto permit of the disengagement of the in'-4 v terlocked surfaces and therotation of the handle i l when required for releasing orfadjusting .the mop- `cloth. 1 f

IMPROVEMENT iN MoP-HEADS.
iii clampinglor releasing the `mop-cloth, by means of.
-o,'to receive the binderin the usual manner.r i y v H is the' pivot-block or friction-bearing, immovahly the spring or elasticity ofthe binder and mop-cloth bei Letters Patent No. 107,897, 'dated caster 4, 1870.
f The" Schedule referred to these Letters jPatent and making part of the same b, and provided with 'an external thread, a's shown.'
C is thc stationary jaw lor cross-head. 1),'the movable jaw or binder; ,and
E, the nut or. yoke which, connects the two ends Y thereof. This nnt may be cast entire, or` in halves,
which are afterward united by rivets, that also secure l the-ends of the binder in place, as shown.
The cross-head is cast with a longitudinal secured in the socket c of the cross-head by a rivet, t', Its connection with the tubular screw is maintained p by aninwardly-projecting flange, b', at the end of the y The rotation of the handle, in adjusting the movscrew, which engages with the outwardly-projecting Ailange h. of the bearing, as clearly shown in Fig. III, whereby the separation otlthepart's is prevented,
, while'the screw isV left free-to' turn around the flanged vhead of thev bearing-during` the adjustment of the movable jaw.
on is the indented surface of the cross-head snr-` `rounding the socket c','and u yu are a number, of teeth Y or projections at the end. of 'the tubular screw, de-
signed to tin and engage withthese indentations.
In putting up our improved mop-head, the bearingblock H is iii-st inserted in the tubular-screw, and then' riveted to the cross-head. The handle is now fasti cned in the screw, and the nut arranged on the screw7 andthe ends ofthe hinder secured thereon. f
The mop-cloth being clamped between the crossvhead and bindcr,`by revolving the handle `and tubular screw within` the nut E in the usual manner. The serrated connection between the end ofthe screw and cross-head prevents the handle from unscrewing and releasing the cloth during the ordinary use of the mop.
When the cloth is requiredto'be released or adjusted, the application of a greater or lesser force, according to the tightness with which the cloth was clamped,
will overcome this fastening, andcause the teeth utc slide over theindentedsurfacc aa as the handle is revolved, the binder, which operates as a spring, yielding suticiently to permit of this partial separation and movement.
yturn around in-,actuating the binder. In suoli case,
as the `parts are not riveted together, the cross-head will separate 'from the screw as the binder is released.
lo prevent the handle from being entirely withr Barrato, Naw Y groove, v
dmwnffrom the nut, wev make the thread of theI screw to lterminate before it reaches the end of tlie screw,
so as to leave :n bead or stop, s, to arresti-he movement, as clearly. shown. Y
W'hat We claim as our invention isr l.v 'lhe flanged pivot-hearing H, immovnbly riveted to the cross-head, and arranged with the contracted opening of theA tubular screw B, substantially as and for the' purpose herenbefore Set forth,
, 2. The arrangement, infn mophearl,-inv\vhich the 'movable jaw is operated by the threaded shank 'of the handle, which screws through the unt or yoke that connects the-ends of the movable-binder, of serrations Wfituesses:
