Description

UNITED ,STATES PATENT OEEIoE.A
IRVING E. wESToN, or wINoHENDoN, MASSACHUSETTS.
-IMPROVED Mop-HEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59.299. dat-ed October 30, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVING E. WESTON, ot' Winehendon, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in Mops, of'
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Y Figure l is an elevation ol' my improved mop. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line x of Fig. 1.
My invention consists in connecting the outer jaw of a mop to the handle by means of a collar and projection, and the inner jaw to the handle by a screw and nut, so that in turning` the outerjaw or the handle the innerjaw will move to or from the outer one, as the case may be, and so that when the material that constitutes the mop is clamped between the jaws tightly, then the outerjaw is alsovclamp'ed by means ot the collar being jammed against the projection by means ofthe screw.
To enable others skilled in the art .to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings. I
A is the handle of the mop, which is secured in a metal socket, B, by a pin, a, or otherwise. On the lower end of this socket B there is a shoulder, b, against which a collar or yoke, E, works-the outer jaw, D, being connected to this collar or yoke by side bars or arms, d, bent into suitable form, as shown in the drawings, Fig. 1.
' U is the inner jaw of the mop, which is grooved at its ends `to slide and be guided on the side bars of the outer jaw. To this inner jaw, C, there is connected a screw, c, which runs in a screw-thread cut in the socket E, and the handle is bored out to allow the screw c to run up into it.
Byturning either the handle or the 1nophead the inner jaw will travel to or from the outer jaw, as the case may be. When, however, the material of which the mop is made is tightly clamped between the jaws, then the yoke or collar E is drawn so tightly against the projection b, by means ot' the screw c, that it will not turn, and consequently the material will be rigidly held between the jaws until the handle is turned to release the screw. The strain or force is mainly on the collar and project-ion, and is brought and held by them through the action of the screw and nut in the socket, or male and female screw-threads, which act as a jam-screw and nut to hold the collar and projection from moving one upon the other. 4
What, I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Uniting the outer j aw of a mop to the socket by means of a collar and projection, and the inner jaw to the socket by means of a screw and thread, and so that by turning either the mop-head or the handle the inner jaw will travel to or from the outer one, but when the material is clamped between the jaws, then the collar shall be rigid on the socket by means of the Screw drawing and holding them tightly together, in the. manner and for the purpose Set forth.
IRVING E. WESTON.
