same.
This invention relates to a new and.usefnl,
ladys hatfastener, the'objectl of. the invtenL tion being to provide a device of this nature,
which is simple, durable, light, efficientL and practical in construction, and easily mounted in the hat crown, as well as being simple to operate. 'v
There are disclosed in the drawings certainlfeatures of construction, but in1prac tical fields vthese features may necessitate al.v terations, to which the patentes is entitled,
provided the alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimedl.
The invention comprises further features and combination; of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
' In the dra-.vings-Figure 1 is a View of a ladys head, showing a hat inHsection, with the improved fastener applied. Fig.v Q is a cross sectionalaview of the hat. Fig. 3 1s an enlarged perspective view of the fastener .removedA Fig. i is a sectional view on line` 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 1s a-seetional v1ew onv line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the dra-wings more especially 1 designates a stationary jaw, which comprises the usual arched comb 2. This stationary jaw also includes the arms 4, -which extend downwardly and rearwardly. The upper forward ends of the arm, are bent at angles as shown, and from one side of eachl of said bent portions a flange 6 is provided,
which under-laps the comb. TheV other side,
or edge of each bent portion is provided with a series of fingers 5, which fingers are bent between the teeth of the comb, and lapped under the rib l, thereby securely attaching said arms to the comb. .Said arms are provided with threaded apertures 6 'to receive the Shanks 7 of the ornamental buttons 8. In the present case thsebuttons are dia'- niond shaped. and are designed to act as trimming for the hat. However, their shape and; ornamentation may vary, in constructi'ng' the hat fastener in' great numbers. The buttons' may be covered, iii desired, of. the same niateriai from which. the hat is made. Nnts-9 are threaded upontlie Shanks of' tlie buttons; in order to hold the arms and the stationary comb jaw in place.. Pivoted. at' the rear ends of' saidxarms arel links v 11; their upper ends terminating in bent' portions, which are provided withv Ythe under turned flanges'lf and'fingers V These ianges and .fingersla-and 13 are designed to perform lthe same functions asI thoseI of the flanges land-lingers 6 and 5, namely, tounderlap the Arib4 14"" of the comb 14. One of the objects of the invention, is that in manufacturing this improved hat fastener the usual stock tortoise shell archedor other makes of combs are tov be utilized, and to which combs the arinsfi and links 11 are to be connected, vas in the manner shown in the drawings. In this manner of constructing the device, the cost of production is considerably lessened, owing to the fact that an especially constructed comb is not necessary, as in other devices of' this nature. Furthermore, by means of the said flanges (t and' 13, and the fingers 5 and 13, the arms and links 11 are firmly secured to said combs. The comb 141 and the links 1L constitute the movable jaw.
. Upon each side of 'the fastener a coil spring-15 is arranged. One end of each spring is connected to one of the links, while the other end is connected at 1G to the forward upper ends of said arm.
ASecured in an aperture of the 'movable comb jaw is a link 16a, to which a chain or the like 17 having a button 18 is connected. When the comb jaw is closed, 'seras to cooperate with the other comb jaw, in order to clamp the wearers hair, the chain is drawn taut, and the button is heldclosely in contact with the hat. Said button 18 is designed to act as a trimming, rosette or the like for the hat, as are the buttons 8. When it is desired to detach or remove the hat, the wearer vshould take hold of the button and pull upon the chain vin order to o en the vrinovable jaw, after which by slight y moving the, hat forwardly and upwardly, the same may be4 removed. The arms and the links may be constructed of any Suitable light material, such as aluminum or the like.
From the foregoing it will be noted that rearwardly extending arms, their upper and forward ends terminating in plates extending substantially laterally and toward one another engaging the body of the stationary comb jaw and having :lingers extending( l about and underlying the body of the stationary'comb jaw,v said' fingers arranged between the teeth of the stat-ionary comb jaw,
one edge of each plate of each arm having a flange underlying the body of the stationary comb' jaw, downwardly extending links having their lower endspivoted to the rear lower ends of said arms, the upper ends of said links terminating in plates extending' substantially laterally and toward one another and engaging the body of the movable comb jaw, one'edgeof each plate of each link having a flange underlapping the bod) of the movable comb jaw, while the opposite edge of each plate of each link is provided with fingers extending between the teeth of the movable comb jai? and underlying the body thereof, spring connections between the links and said arms, anda device constituting means whereby the movable comb jaw may be opened.A
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
