To all whom it may concernv Be it knownthat I, SAM H. FANNING, citizen of the'United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Educational Devices, ofwhich the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements 111 combined desk and blackboard devices arranged in convenient shape for opening and closing and reversingin position, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efiicie'ncy and utility of'devices of this character.

Another objectof the invention is to provide a device combined with and arranged upon and in a suitable casing of closure of a writing desk having a blackboard upon one side so arranged that either side of the desk member maybe presented foruse.

lK- ith these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim. 1

Connected to the bottom member of the casing 10, and extending over the bottom member of the book-case portion of the improved device, is an annular bearing plate 20, and bolted at 21 to the bottom member of the casing 10, and rotating against the bearing plate 20, is a head member or disk 22 having-an annular channel for receiving an annular trough 23 for supporting a plurality of bearing balls 24. The side member 'of the receptacle. 31 next 7 to the end of the casing is spaced slightly therefrom", and connected to the receptacle is a swinging arm 36 which extends. over the outerface of the portfolio or book, and; is provided with springs 37 operating to. yieldably maintain the arm in place, and thus yieldably support the book in its upright position, but permitting the leaves to be turned down one at a time as required.

Located within the space beneath the re ccptacle 31, is a relatively long casing represented as a whole at 38, and provided with an upwardly and rearwardly sloping top 39, the latter provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots 40. Located within the casing 38 are a plurality of spring rollers 41 upon each of which a map 42 is mounted, each map provided with an enlarged stop member 43 bearing against theouter face of the top 39, and each stop member provided with a pull tape 44. By this means the spring rollers maintain the maps normally in withdrawn position, but any one of the maps may be withdrawn by force applied to its pull tape. The rollers 41 are of the form usually employed with shade rollers, so that the maps may be supported at any desired point when drawn outwardly and may be automatically returned to their inward position, as will be obvious.

The bottom of the casing 10 is projected slightly outward to form a ledge 45, and resting upon this ledge is the combined desk and blackboard portion of the improved device which comprises a board or leaf represented as a whole at 46. At one side the member 46 is preferably covered with a suitable fabric to form a desk surface, While at its opposite side the member 46 is provided with outwardly projecting side members 47, each having an inwardly directed longitudinal groove or channel 48 to receive a plate 48 of any suitable material such as heavy cardboard and forming a covering for the main surface which is preferably of blackboard material as indicated at 49. By this means a combined blackboard and desk feature is provided, and-the improved device is so arranged that either, side may be presented outwardly" for use. i

Formed in the inner faces of the end members of the casinglO near the ledge are small sockets 50, and projecting from the side edges of the combined desk and blackboard member 46, are pins 51 adapted to enter the sockets 50 when the desk member is located between the end members of the casing. The combined desk and blackboard member is constructed to completely fill the space within the lower portion of the casing as represented in Fig. 1. Formed in the end members of the casing are other sockets or guideways 52 to receive the pins 51 when the member 46-49 is disposed as a desk, and the means whereby the member 46 is arranged as a desk, constitutes a part of the improved construction, and this sup porting mechanism will now be described.

Pivoted at 53-54 to the end members of the casing 10 and near the upper end of the space occupied by the desk member, are slotted bars 5556 and pivoted at 57--5S to the desk member are other bars 5960. The bar 59 is provided with a lateral headed pin 61 slidably engaging in the slot of the bar 55, while the bar 60 is provided with a similar headed pin 62 slidably engaging in the slot of the bar 56. Projecting inwardly from the end members of the casing 10 and located between the slots 52 and the pivots 5354 are stop pins 6364. The bars 5556 and 5960 are so propor tioned that they fold together into substantial parallel relations when the desk member isin its closed position between the side members of the casing 10 and resting upon the ledge 45, and support the desk in its open position when the pins 51 are inserted into the guides 52 as shown in Fig. 5, the pins 61-62 then being located at the outer ends of the slots of the bars 55- 56. The casing 38 which contains the maps is so located that when the desk is in its open position as shown in Fig. 5, the maps may be drawn outwardly and lie upon the upper face of the desk.

Connected to the top member of the casing 10, is a hook in position to receive the ring at the end of the pull tapes 44 of the maps, and is utilized to support any one of the maps in vertical position if required. Attached to the front edges of the end members of the casing 10, near their upper ends, are staples or keepers'66, and mounted to swing at 67 upon the desk member 46, are hooks 68 adapted to engage in the staples 66 when the desk is closed, and thus lock the latter in closed position, as shown. Another receptacle is formed in the casing 10 above the desk portion of the deviceand likewise above the receptacle 31, and located within this upper receptacle is a frame-work supporting a suitable scroll which may be wound from one roller to another by a crank device applied externally of the casing.

The frame-work of the scroll comprises a front or main. member 69 and end members 70, the member 69 bein preferably of wood, and the end member (0 of sheet metal pressed into the required shape and secured by screws or other fastening devices 71 to the member 69. Mounted for rotation in the end members 70 above and below the supporting member 69, are guide rollers,

72-73, and mounted by journals 74-75 in a 3 74 75 are formed square to receive a wind 4 ing crank 80, and surrounding the journals 74-'-7 5 between the disks 78-79, and the members 70 are s rin s re resented at 81' 7 and operating to retard the movement of the drums and prevent them from rotating too freely.

One of the end members of the casing 10 is provided with relatively large apertures suitably hushed as shown at 82, and through which the crank 80 is inserted for application to the squared ends of the journals 747 5. By this means no portion of the scroll mechanism projects beyond the casing, while at the same time the journals of the scroll device are readily accessible when the latter is to be rotated. A flexible sheet of suitable material represented at 83, is connected at its ends to the drums 76-77, and extends over the rollers 7273, as shown. By this means it will be obvious that the sheet 83 may be wound upon one of the drums and unwound from the other by simply applying the crank 80 to the journals 74 or 75, as the case may be. The sheet 83 may be of any required length and contain any required matter, such as pictures, drawing and painting lessons, penmanship copies, figures, letters and other data. The portion of the casing 10 which is located opposite to the scroll frame, is provided with an open frame 84: through which the matter on the scroll is observable, and a closure plate 85 is arranged to slide vertically rearwardly of the frame and thus shut off the view of the scroll when not required. Hooks 86 project from the casing 10, preferably through the frame 84:, and are designed to receive the hooks 68 of the desk member of the improved device, and thus support the latter with the blackboard face outwardly, and when the desk is thus arranged the bars 5556 are arranged vertically and bear against the stop pins 63-64, while the bars 59-60 support the lower portion of the desk member in an outwardly and downwardly inclined position as shown in Fig. 2. When the device is to be employed as a blackboard the closure member 48' is removed.

The scroll portion of the improved device will preferably contain copies for drawing, writing, lettering, and the like, and the blackboard portion of the device being arranged in convenient position relative to the scroll to be employed by the pupil in copying the various matters disclosed upon the scroll upon the blackboard. The scroll and the blackboard thus co-act and are employed one to supplement the other. The combined desk and blackboard device also co-acts with the numerous maps contained in the box at the lower end of the casing, as before described, as the maps are adapted to lie over the desk and blackboard member when the latter is arranged as a desk, as before stated. By this means the map-holding devices and the blackboard co-act to increase the convenience and efficiency of the device.

The casing and the other parts may be of any required size and of any suitable material. The closure 48 for the blackboard face of the combined desk and blackboard member may be provided with any suitable face such as a picture, map, or other illustration, and thus utilized to increase the utility and efliciency of the device.

What I claim is: r

In a device of the class described, a casing including side members, a desk member, bars pivoted at one end to said desk member intermediate the ends thereof, slotted bars pivoted at one end to said casing near the upper end, pivot devices carried by said desk-engaging bars and slidable in the slots, hooks extending from the casing above the pivots of the slotted bars, means for detachably coupling said desk to the casing when in lower position, hooks swinging from said desk and adapted to engage the hooks of the casing when the desk is in its upper position, and stops carried by the casing and against which sald slotted bars bear to support the desk in sloping position relative to the casing in said upper position.
