In this way, the gas and air will be thorou hly commingled and the mixture, instead 0 being strea-ky so to speak, will be delivered into the engine cylinder as a perfectly homogeneous gas. The wire mesh, cutting across the stream of gas and air as it does, acts as a stirrer or agitator, and, on account of its relative coarseness, does not impede the movement of the gas and air to any appreciable extent.
It will be apparent from an inspection of the drawings that the fan is a plate with an upstanding edge or flange m and that the bottom of the plate has fan blades m which are cut therefrom. This fan consists of a' one-piece sheet metal circular plate having its marginal edges bent up laterally at substantially right angles thereto for forming the cylindrical rim or upstanding guard flange m, and the main body portion of the plate has portions thereof cut away to form a series of blades m and intervenin openings m. The openings last referre to are of less radial length than the radius of the fan, thus leaving a central web m or portion uniting the inner ends of the blades. The outer ends of the blades are separated from the rims by slits m extending, in the same direction as the run, from the openings at one edge to a point in proximity of the opposite edge of the blades leaving relatively narrow webs m uniting the outer edges of the blades to the rim. The portions of the outer edges of the blades which are separated from therim by the slits are de flected laterally upwardly to points in close proximity to the upper edge of the rim. The screen Z fits within the upwardly extending flange, and it is apparent that the latter may be secured in place in thefan by any suitable means as by soldering or otherwise, should such be desired.
The mixing device as a whole, constituting a unitary structure and being separable from the engine and carbureter, may be inserted and removed at will. For this purpose, the parts are constructed and arranged I so that the carbureter may be fitted directly to the engine and so that the mixing device may be fitted'between the engine and the carbureter. In the present case, this is accomplished by providing the carbureter and engine with flanges 0 and 72 respectively and by providing the mixing device with corresponding flanges 1' and s respectively, al-
though it will be obvious that other constructions and arrangements might be adopted for the same purpose. As shown in Fig. 1 where the mixing device is interposed between the carbureter and engine,
the flanges p and s are secured together by means of'nuts and bolts and the flanges r and 0 are secured together in the same way.
By removing the nuts and bolts from both pairs of flanges, the mixing device may be removed and the carburetor attached directly to the manifold f, as will be obvious. I
The advantages of the foregoing construc tion and relation of parts have already been referred to and will be obvious without further exposition at this point. It will be clear, too, that on account of the flat and compact form of the mixing device, it may be very readily embodied in existing gas engine, constructions. Moreover, it should be noted that the mixing device may be embodied in many different forms as a separable and unitary structure and hence the invention is not limited to the present embodiment shown and described herein.
I claim as my invention:
1. As a new article of manufacture .for use in conjunction with a carburetor the combination of a thin, flat, hollow casing having flange portions at opposite ends and a hollow inner portion, and rotatable in the casing, a mixing element comprising a screen and a fan, the latter of which is provid ed with a cylindrical rim or flange wit-hin which are located the fan blades which extend radially, the screen being parallel with and secured to the fan and fitting inside of the flange.
2. An article of manufacture for use in combination with hydrocarbon engines and comprising in combination a thin, hollow flange casing having therein a revolubly mounted moving element comprising a fan and an agitating member, the fan having a cylindrical rim and fan blades within the rim and the agitating member being a screen which is parallel with the fan, extending across the fan, and in engagement with the rim portion of the latter.

A. mixing device having a mixing element comprising a central bearing member which permits the mixing element to rotate, a fan member and an agitating member, both of the last mentioned members being secured tothe central bearing member, the fan member comprising a. cylindrical rim and fan blades therein and the agitating member comprising ascreen which is parallel with the fan andwhich passes across the end of the mixing element and which also on a pivoted bearing, the fan comprising a plate having an upstanding flanged rim and fan blades located within the rim, the screen having its edges bent downwardly so as to fit within and engage the rim.
6. As a new article of manufacture, the combination of a casing comprising only two main parts and forming a shallow hollow member with inlet and outlet openings, and a mixing element for gas and air pivoted between the main parts so as to rotate within the casing, the said mixing element comprising a fan upon the side next to the inlet opening and a screen parallel with and. secured to the fan and located upon the side next to the outlet 0 ening.
