Our invention relates broadly to improvements in mixing devices and more particularly to a device adapted to be disposed within the fuel outlet tube of an ordinary carbureter, so constructed as to eli'ectively mix the fuel and air passing through such tube to compound the same into a highly volatile mixture.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the class specified which may be simply and easily manufactured and marketed, and which when applied to use will be highly eflicient and durable and will have no wearing parts whatever.
lVith this general object in view, .the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter "fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the yaccompanying drawing which constitutes a part of thls applicatlon and in which Figure l is a. vertical sectional view of a portion of the fuel outlet of a ca'rbureter showing the application of the invention thereto, the latter being shown in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a similar view disclosing a. vertical section of the improved device; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on 'the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4 isla plan view of one of the'fuel deflecting members, and Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section -as seen on the plane designated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In specifically describing the invention shown in the drawing abovel brieiiy described, reference will be made to such drawing by similar characters placed on corresponding parts throughout the several views. To this end, T represents the fuel outlet tube of a mixing device, such tube being shown as provided with an outstand ing annular ange F at its lower end secured by bolts or the like B to a similarange F1 projecting outwardly from the discharge nipple N of the carbureter, an appropriate gasket G of rubber or other suitable material being disposed between the two ianges. Having a trio of equally spaced arms 1 radiating from its center, is a spider 2, the" ends of said arms being embeddediin the gasket G preferably having depending stops 3 abutting the inner side of^the nipple N, whereby the spider is held against lateral shifting. Rising from the center of the spider 2 and secured thereto in any preferred manner, is an upright rectangular shaft 4 having a reduced upper end 5' nut G is threaded.
Mounted non-rotatably on the shaft i and having rectangular openings 7 at their cen-A ters receiving said shaft, are a number of in Contact with the flange F and upon which a clamping vertically spaced fuel, deflecting members 8, all of which are ofy circular formation, being preferably constructed of sheet metal, and of a'size to totally lillr the cross sectional area of the tube T. The several members 8 are slit radially at intervals as disclosed more particularly at 9 in Fig. 4, whereby to provide such members with aV plurality of radiating blades 10, such bl'ades being formed with perforations 11 passing therethrough at right angles to the opposite faces thereof. The inner ends of the blades l0 are. so twisted as to dispose such blades obliquely of the axes of the numerousimembers as clearly shown in Fig. l, the blades of the three members being disposed parallelv to and oppositefeach other.
interposed between the members 8 is a plurality of additional deiecting members 8 which are identical in construction with said members 8 with the exception that their blades l0 are inclined in the opposite direction, being disposed at approxi-mately right angles to the blades 10 and having their opposite edges in Contact with the intermediate portions of said blades 10. Similarly, the edges of the blades 10 contact with the intermediate portions of the blades 10a. This arrangement is shown most clearly in Fig; 1, and is particularly advantageous, since it provides a ml `tiplic ity of zig-zag passages through which the fuel and air must pass, such passages being in turn divided into a great number of smaller and supplemental passages by the erforations in the blades 10 and 10a. Thus 1t will be evident that the air and fuel drawn through the network formed by the intermeshing bladesV of the several deflecting members, will he effectively compounded and mixed into aneilicient highly volatile mixture which ywill produce firstl class results in the cylinder or cylinders of the engine.
Although the several members 8 and 8 could well be spaced :from each other by any preferred means at their centers, a number of washers 12 are preferably used for this purpose as shown in Fig. 2, certain of these washers being 'positioned between the lower most member and the spider, while another is interposed between the nut 6 and thel uppermost member.
Particular emphasis is laid upon the fact that the construction above described fil the entire cross sectionalarea of the tube and thus prevents any fuel and air from passing to the engine cylinders without first passing through the numerous zig-zag passages above described. Also, it is of great advantage that thc numerous members be n0nr0tatahly mounted, since by so doing, no wearing parts whatever need be used, thus providing a device which will not deteriorate with age.
F rom the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be obvious that although the construction of the device is .simple and inexpensive, the article will beihighly eliicient and durable and will possess a number ot advantageous features.
in the drawing, certain specific arrangements oi' parts have been shown for the at'- tainment of probably the best results, and in the preceding description such arrangements have been described, but obviously, numerous changes in form, proportion,and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

The combination with the fuel outlet tube .of a carburetor; ot a spider secured therein, a `rectangular shaft secured to said spider and positioned at the axis oi' the tube, a pair ot' fuel i'leflecting members disposed transverscly in said tube and having rectangular openings at their centers recciv ing the shaft, said members being nl a size to ill thc cross sectional area of the tube and having a plurality oi radiating.; perforated blades disposcd at an angle to their axes, an additional dellecting member interposed between the other members and liliewise having a rectangular opening receiv-` ing the shaft, said additional member being also'formed with a plurality of radiating perforated blades disposed opposite the spaces between the blades ot' the other niembers, the edges ot the blades ot' the additional melnbcr being disposed in contact with the intermediate portions of the blades of the other members, and rice versa7 a plurality ot' washers spacing the several memn bers on the shaft, an additional washer spacing said members Jfrom the spider., a nut threaded on they free end ot the shaft, and
