ALDEN A. STEWARD, or BUTLND, VERMONT.
i' aphids/cion g l To all 'whom 'it may concern." i
Be it known that I, 'ALBEN A. STEWARD, a'
fcitizen of the United States, residing at- Rutland, county of Rutland, State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Fire-Checks, of-which the following is a .speci-cation, reference beingl had therein' to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a fire check and 'particularly to a structure adapted to be disposed between the' source of supply of anV explosive mixture and the engine or is to be used. The invention has .for an object tofprof vide fare4 check com ates and gauze disposed in contact vwith eachA other and with the edges thereof parallel withthe How of the Huid through the check.
Other and further objects and advantages of the ,inventionY will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing-Figure l is vertical section showing the invention `apfront elevation of a diaphragm having-a check mounted therein; Fig. 3 is a vertical section therethrough; Fig. Fis a'detail perspective of the check with parts broken away; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectionshowing af modified application of vertical vcross sectiona modified form of the check; Figl- 7 is a etail perspective of amodied form Fig. 8 is a' sectional view of a modified forln of check.
referencerefer to like parts in the several figures of thedrawing.
The numeral 1'0 deslgnates the fire-check which is composed of -a series of metallic Like numerals of plates`11 alternated with sheets of metallic gauze/orlreticulated material 12 clamped` in eachother by 'any desired means for instance a binding wire 13 as shown. u This laminated structure is mountedl in any desired-manner for instance upon a diaphragm 14 as shown ,in Figs; 1, 2 and 3. This diaphragm may be mounted in anyV desired manner topresent/the edggs of the plate and gauze parallel withrthe' flow of the fluid therethrough, It is shown in Fig. l as .mounted in acasing 15 having a communicating-api e 16 from a supply and a similar pipe 1 extending to an explosive engine. In Fig. 5 this diaphragm isY shown rma-crises.
Specification of Letters lPatent. fled SEptmbeg 13, 1909.
risingI a laminatedA a central plate used in the checkgandratenta May 24, Ser1`k1No.`517,545. l
as disposed diagonally of a I pipe or coniductor 18. The laminated layersforming the check are here shown as secured incontactwfith each other by a binding .wire but any other desired means may be used and the plate 11 n'ay' be perforated as shown at 19 in Fig. 7 inorderto Aculation or otherwise ferred.' ,Y l y Fig; illustrates a modified form of the invention wherein a metallic sheet 20 Iand gauze 21 `are spirally coiled upon each other to form a circular body which may be conveniently introduced into a pipe or other fluid conductor with its axis parallel to the flow of Huid therethrough.`
Fig.' 8 illustrates a modified Vform of the .invention wherein annular corrugated plates of metal 25 are usedin connection with intermediate sheets'of gauze 26. the whole be' A lng linclosed within a perforated casing 2'( vdisposed in a pipe or other receptacle 28.
,ST is casing is threaded at 29 so as `to retain it in position and the head thereof is provided with a socket or tool hold, 30. The central space in the laminated plates communicates with a feed opening 3l in the receptacle 28 soothat the fluid passes from the receptacle into contactl with the edges of the plates and gauze f and c thence outward through the opening in the receptacle as indicated by arrows in Fi 8. l
In the opeation'of t e invention the ex'- plosive iuld mixture. is drawn in one direcofthe engine ormtor .while the 4structure of the'check irg therethrough in a 'reverse direction under high pressure back firing of the engine. As the gaseous mixture .through the collected strips u and gauze it is exposed to the largest area of metallic surface and chilled below` the point of combus-.
tion while the alternate layers produce eddies in the gas which break u Lthe'oscilla- 'tions thereof and' thereby chec the propa;l
gation of Haine.y ordinarily pass through fire checks composed of superposed layes of gauze as theeddies produced are uniform owing to the configuration` of the structure and passages. It has been found by experiment that imperfect .contraction is produced by and. interposed wire gauzeand the iow of iuidris increased while the resistance thereto breaks up the oscillations ofthe fiame and the use of a plate secure a lateral circonstructed as pre-H t1on through the check by the suction action prevents the gas or ame pass# Hows edgewise Gas underjpressure will lot checks combustion. Ordinary wire gauze or screen'presents in its structure a large number of orifices in a thin plate while the metallic sheet vheld in contact therewith produces non-,uniform contracted orifices which pass more fluid in a disturbed ,condition and metal .strips also act to strengthen the structurey and prevent warping thereof under high pressureback fires while if the strips be perforated a lateral How `of fluid may be secured through the check.
The invention therefore presents a simple, efficient and economically constructed form of re check adapted to prevent the commu- 'nication of flame to the source of supply from 'a motor under any operating pressure. Having Vdescribed my invention and set forth its merits what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is f 1. A iire check comprising laminated al,-
' ternate plates and reticulated strips disposed with the edges thereof parallel with the flow of fluid therethrough.
2.x A fire check comprising alternatelayers of metallic plates and gauze disposed f withf-t'heedges thereof parallel with the flow of material therethrough.
3. A fire check comprising alternate layers of metallic plates and gauze disposed with the edges thereof parallel with the flow of material therethrough, and means for binding said plates and gauze into contact with each other. check the production of flame. The sheet y 4. A fire check comprising alternate layers of metallic plates and gauze disposed with the edges thereof parallel with the flow f of material therethrough, and a binding wire surrounding said plates and gauze for holding them in contact with each other.
5. A re check comprising alternate lay- `ers of apertured metallic plates and gauze disposed with the edges thereof parallel with the flow of the iuid therethrough.
6. A fire check comprising a diaphragm having mounted. therein alternating layers of metallic plates and gauze disposed in contact with each other and with their-edges parallel with the iow of iuid therethrough.
In testimony whereof I aiiix 'my signature in presence of two witnesses. l
