Be it known that I, MATTEO TAMBURINI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey,rhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination locks of the class in which a rotary key or spindle is shiftable longitudinally to either of two positions-one where it is so disposed that on rotating it the bolt will be thereby moved and the other where its bit will be out of position to move the bolt on rotating the spindle-and has a system of rotary notched disks for controlling its longitudinal movements.
The principal objects of the invention are to render the mechanism of such locks more simple and compact; to give them a neater and more attractive appearance as fittings for a door or the like; to enable them to be attached in position without difficulty and without unduly cutting away or injuring the woodwork; and to facilitate their operation by those authorized to use them.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an edgewise view of a door provided with the improved lock; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of what is shown in Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view substantially in the axis of the spindle in Fig. 4; Fig. 4 is a side'elevation of the lock proper, with one wall broken away; and, Fig. 5 is an inside elevation of the rotary disks, detached.
In the door a is set in the usual manner the case b of the lock-proper, the same including a horizontal sliding bolt c, suitably guided therein as by the front wall d of the lock and a stud e penetrating a slot in the bolt. The spindle or key f, carrying the knob g, penetrates an opening 7L in the (removable) side wall z' of the case, and it has a reduced extremity y' provided with the opposite diametrically disposed lugs or bits 7c. The other side wall z" of the case has a horizontal slot Z which is shaped to conform to the cross-section ofthe spindle in a plane cutting the bits 7c thereof; this slot enables the spindle to be moved longitudinally from the position in Fig. 8 to the right to a position where the bits 7c will be within the case and more or less under the bolt. The limits of movement of the bolt are afforded by the movable tumbler mi which is pivoted on the stud n between the bolt and the wall z" and has a lug 0 which drops into one or the other of two notches p in the top of the bolt under the pressure of the spring Q. Y (The ltumbler m and bolt o may be kept from shifting to the right in Fig. 3 by the stud r-on the bolt-adapted to bear against the wall The tumbler normally rests on a stop s on the wall z", and when the spindle is turned, the relatively upper bit raises the tumbler m out of interlocked relation to the bolt. The bolt has two spaced bit-abutment surfaces t substantially coincident with the upper side o-f the slot Z and between these surfaces are two bit-receiving recesses u. When the spindle is drawn to the right in Fig. 3 so that its bits are immediately to the right of the wall z" it will be prevented from turning except in one direction by one of its bits impinging against one of the surfaces t. Upon being turned in said direction the bits will successively enter the recesses u and advance the bolt until the other bit impinges the other surface t, which will be exactly at the end of one complete revolutionof the spindle. At the inception of the rotary motion of the spindle the bit which first becomes active to advance the bolt lifts the tumbler out of locking engagement with the bolt; at the end of the half revolution the tumbler returns, resting with its lug 0 on the bolt between the notches p thereof; and at the end of the full revolution, the tumbler having been meanwhile raised by the other bit, it again assumes locking relation to the bolt.

The spindle f substantially fits a circular opening y in an indexed disk z having an interior channel 2 formed with a notch 3 in the inner wall thereof. Inwardly of this disk is another two-part indexed disk 4;, the outer part 5 of which is a ring bearing its indicesand the inner part 6 of which is screwed into the outer part and forms with a flange 7 on the latter an annular groove for an exterior flange 8 on the disk z. The spindle having noiv been turned one revolution, it may be pushed back to its original position, and the combination being disturbed it cannot again be draivn outwardly until the combination is readjusted. lfilhen the spindle, in being turned one 1fvay or the other to move the bolt, comes to rest with one of its bits in contact Wit-h one of the surfaces t, the operator is advised that the movement of the bolt is completed and that the bit-including portion of the spindle is in exact registry with the slot Z.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as neiv and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. ln combination, the case, a spindle arranged to rotate on and movable longitudinally of its own longitudinal axis in the case and having a radial bit, said case having a slot alined with the spindle and conforming substantially to the cross-sectional shape thereof in a transverse plane cutting the bit, and a bolt movable in the case longitudinally into and out of protruding relation thereto, said slot extending substantially parallel with the path of movement of the bolt and the bolt having spaced bit-abutment surfaces substantially coincident with one side of said slot and a bit-receiving recess betiveen said surfaces substantially as described.
2. In combination, the case, a spindle arranged to rotate on and movable longitudinally of its own longitudinal axis in the case and having a radial bit, said case having a slot alined with the spindle and conforming substantially to the cross-sectional shape thereof in a transverse plane cutting the bit, a bolt movable in the case longitudinally into and out of protruding relation thereto, said slot extending substantially parallel with the path of movement of the bolt and the bolt having spaced bit-abutment surfaces substantially coincident with one side of Said slot and a bit-receiving recess between said surfaces, and a tumbler movable into and out of interlocking relation to the bolt and projecting into the path of rotary movement of said bit, substantially as described.
8. ln combination, the lock proper having a bolt, a rotary bolt operating spindle movable longitudinally into and out of operative relation to the bolt, a supporting plate, an indexed disk journaled in the plate, and another indexed disk journaled in. the first disk, said disks having openings penetrated by and fitting the spindle and a plurality of annular spaces separat-ed from each other and surrounding the spindle and connected by notches, and the spindle having pins adapted to pass through said notches on longitudinal movement of the spindle, substantially as described.
et. ln combination, the lock proper having a bolt, a rotary bolt-operating spindle movable longitudinally into and out of operative relation to the bolt, a supporting plate having an interiorly flanged opening penetrated by the spindle, a backing disk arranged in said opening and forming with said flange an annular groove, an indexed disk journaled'in said opening in the plate and having an annular flange received in said groove and itself having an interior annular groove, and another indexed disk journaled in the first indexed disk and having an annular flange received in the groove thereof, said dis is having a plurality of annular spaces separated from each other and surrounding the spindle and connected by notches, and the spindle having pins adapted to pass through said notches on longitudinal movement of the spindle, substantially as described.
