Description
R. L. BARNUM.
DRILL. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 23, 1912.
Patented Oct. 21, 1913.
rivi I ROBERT LEE BARNUIVI, 01E OAKMAN, ALABAMA.
DRILL.
Application filed November 28, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ronnnr L. BARNUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakman, in the county of alker and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drills, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to coal drilling machines and an object thereof is the provision of a device of this character in which the frame thereof may be adjustable to different lengths according to the work to be done.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a device which may be adjusted to different vertical positions and which is composed of a minimum number of parts and may be easily carried from one point of operation to another.
Vith these and other objects in view, my invention resides in the constructions and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the drilling machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1-.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the main portion of the machine and 2 the auxiliary or adjustable portion thereof. The main portion of the machine comprises a pair of parallel bars 3 which are connected intermediate of their ends by a transverse bar 1, and the forward ends of the bars are converged as at 5 from the transverse bar 4 to their outer ends where they are connectedto a bearing. The adjustable portion 2 of the frame comprises a pair of parallel bars 7 which are formed with longitudinal slots 8, the said bars 7 being adapted to slidably engage in longitudinal grooves 3 in the parallel bars 3 of the main frame. Screws 9 are passed through the bars 3 near the ends thereof, and are adapted to engage in the slots 8 of the bar 7, and wing nuts 9 are mounted on the screws 9 whereby the frame may be adjusted to anydesired length.
Mounted in the parallel bars 3 near the forward ends thereof, is a crank shaft 10, the opposite ends of which extend beyond the bars 3 and have secured thereto crank handles 11. Mounted upon another transverse shaft 12 is a forwardly extending bearing 13 to which the crank shaft 10 is Specification of Letters Patent.

keyed as at 14, whereby lateral movement of the shaft 1s prevented. Centrally mounted on the bar 4 ]S a bearing 15 and mounted in said bearing and the bearing 6 at the forward extremity of the frame is a suitable drive shaft 16, to the inner end of which is secured a pinion 17 which is adapted to mesh with a similar pinion 18, keyed to the crank shaft 10. The outer end of the drive shaft 16 is formed with an enlarged head 19 which is adapted. to receive a drill bit 20, and a set screw 21 is secured in said head for holding the drill bit securely in position. Mounted intermediate of the ends of the parallel bars 3 of the main frame, is a transverse bar 22 upon which is formed an enlarged bearing 23 in which is formed an opening 2 1 for receiving the ground engaging rod 25' which is held in any desired position by the set screw 26.
The inner ends of the parallel bars 7 are connected by a cross bar 27, which forms a breast plate, which is curved rearwardly at its opposite ends as at 28 to receive the opposite ends of a rearwardly curved back plate 29.
The operation of my device is as follows :-In the practical use thereof, the machine is supported at any desired height from the ground by means of the ground engaging rod 25 and the drill bit is placed against the wall of the mine in the desired position, whereupon the machine is ready for use. The operator having adjusted the frames to suitable position, the crank handles 11 are rotated and the drive shaft 16 is simultaneously rotated by reason of the pinions 17 and 18 which mesh with one another. WVhen a hole of suflicient depth has been made, the bit may be withdrawn and the machine moved to another position and the operation repeated.
It will be seen from the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that I have provided a mining machine which is composed of a minimum number of parts, which may be cheaply manufactured, and which will fulfil all the requirements of such a device. 7
It is to be understood that in drilling near a rib in the wall of a mine, one of the set screws 30 may be loosened and one of the cranks 11 removed from the shaft 10 and the drilling shaft 16 may be operated by the other of the cranks 11.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. A machine of the character described, comprising a main frame and an adjustable frame, the main frame being formed of parallel bars, a transverse bar connecting said parallel bars at their forward ends, inwardly converging bars connected to the forward ends of said parallel bars, a hear ing connecting the forward ends of said converging bars, a bearing mounted in said transverse bar, a transversely extending crank shaft mounted in said parallel bars, crank handles connected to the opposite ends of said crank shaft, a pinion mounted on said crank shaft, a longitudinally extending drill shaft mounted in said bearings, a pinion mounted on the inner end of said drill shaft and adapted to mesh with the pinion. on said crank shaft, the inner faces of said parallel bars having longitudinal grooves formed therein, and said adjustable frame comprising a breast plate, parallel bars connected to said breast plate said bars being adjustably mounted in the longitudinal grooves in the parallel bars of the main frame, and means for holding the main frame and adjustable frame in adjusted position, as and for the purpose described.
2. A machine of the character described,
comprising a frame consisting of a pair of parallel bars converging at their forward ends, means connecting said parallel bars, a crank shaft mounted transversely in said bars, a crank handle secured to said crank shaft, a pinion mounted on said shaft, a longitudinally extending drill shaft connected to said bars, a pinion mounted on one end of said drill shaft and meshing with the pinion on said crank shaft, the rear ends of said. parallel bars being formed with longitudinal. grooves in their inner faces, a breast plate, formu-dly project-inn parallel bars connected to said breast plate, the forward ends of the last mentioned bars being slidably engaged in the longitudinal grooves in the first men tioned bars, said second mentioned bars having longitudinal slots formed therein, screws passing through the first mentioned bars and engagiirgin said slots in the second mentioned bars, and means engaging said screws to hold said bars in adjusted position, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a-flix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT LEE BARNUM.
